How did Cracker Jacks get their name?

sinton66
06-03-2004, 10:37 PM
According to legend, after the original inventor invented a process that kept the molasses from sticking together, he gave some to a salesman who exclaimed " that's crackerjack". The inventors liked that and copyrighted the name.

kaorder1999
06-03-2004, 10:37 PM
no...he said..."Thats a Cracker Jack..."

Sans Couth
06-03-2004, 10:39 PM
I am going to give it to Kaorder, just because I want him to ask the next question:D

1896 - Legend notes that the name "Cracker Jack" came into use when a customer or a salesman, who tried the Rueckheim product, exclaimed "That really a cracker - Jack!" Actually the words "cracker jack" was a slang expression on those days, meaning "something very pleasing." The brothers loved the name, and had it copyrighted. Their slogan was "The more you eat, the more you want" was also copyrighted that year.

sinton66
06-03-2004, 10:42 PM
okay, but from www.crackerjack.com:

1896 Louis Rueckheim, F.W.'s brother and partner, discovers the process for keeping the molasses-covered popcorn morsels from sticking together. Louis gives the treat to a salesman who exclaims, "That's crackerjack!" "So it is," says F.W. Rueckheim, who then has the words trademarked.

i found this...

Cracker Jack first appeared, according to the official company history, at the World's Fair in Chicago, 1893, offered up by creator F.W. Rueckheim. The name came along three years later when, according to legend, Rueckheim's brother Louis gave the confection to a salesman, who proclaimed, "That's a Cracker Jack!" The brothers agreed, patented the name, and a brand was born.

Coca-Cola debuted in Atlanta’s largest pharmacy, Jacob’s Pharmacy, as a five cent non-carbonated beverage. Later on, the carbonated water was added to the syrup to make the beverage that we know today as Coca-Cola.

What was Coca-Cola originally used for....?

Sans Couth
06-03-2004, 10:51 PM
Cleaning battery posts?:D

Actually it was used as a stimulant I believe.

sinton66
06-03-2004, 10:55 PM
Well, the original formula did contain cocaine, which is what gave birth to the legend about not taking aspirin with Coca-Cola.

Sans Couth

OK, I am gonna guess that it is a trick question then

Dice don't have numbers, they have dots.

Sans Couth
06-03-2004, 11:09 PM
But the dots add up to seven.

Ranger Mom
06-03-2004, 11:09 PM
I'm confused!!!

An ordinary standard die is a regular cube with its six sides numbered with dots from 1 to 6. All opposing sides adding up to 7.

sinton66
06-03-2004, 11:10 PM
Actually, I think it is seven, the trivia site I got it from said six, but that CAN'T be right. RangerMom, you're up.

Sans Couth
06-03-2004, 11:11 PM
six would be impossible :D as would five,

After the current question is answered you guys can answer my question, which is:

What does hupernikomen mean?

Hupernikomen
06-04-2004, 04:00 PM
They both won the triple crown in 1937.

Medwick for the Cardinals and War Admiral for Mr. Riddle.

Joe Medwick was the last NL player to win the Triple Crown BTW.

Now on to my question...

What does hupernikomen mean?

Hupernikomen

that is close enough phil...now how did you know that?

I learned that word in my Greek class in college..

Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

Hupernikomen =we are more than conquerors.

(pretty cool sounding word to me and I like that one word means so much)

Old Tiger

how do you pronounce it?

PhiI C
06-05-2004, 04:11 PM

Hupernikomen
06-05-2004, 04:40 PM
how do you pronounce it?? well pronouncing koine greek is a lost art, but I think it is pronounced ....

huper--rhymes with super
nick
o (long)
men

The nik part is the same root as nike shoes which means victory.

huper is our hyper (above normal)

omen is the 3rd personal plural ending of the verb nik.

Anyway ask the next question

Phil C
06-05-2004, 05:44 PM
Thank you Hyper. It has been so long since I heard it pronounced but I think you are correct. I am waiting to get the word from 66 to have permission to ask my question. :)

Should we postpone this question until at least one of us has seen the movie??

I rescued this thread from the second page, so at this time, I don't think anyone is gonna guess the correct answer!!

sinton66
06-06-2004, 09:54 AM
We could take wild guesses at it, I suppose. Here's mine: He didn't join in the fight because he didn't know those were his kinfolks at the time?

PhiI C
06-06-2004, 11:49 AM
No 66. Those were his adopted family and he knew it. But Ranger Mom has a point. If you want to go ahead to another question until after the opportunity for those to see it on TCM on June 24 Th at 8:30 A.M. I will postpone my question till then but reserve the right to ask it on June 25 late since I will be out of town that week till late Friday night. Of course Sans knows the answer and if he wants to answer it and you both wish him to I have no objections. I will let it be your call. But it is such an obvious answer you will kick yourself for not trying that guess.

PhiI C
06-06-2004, 12:10 PM
Since a lot of you have not seen the movie (which I hope you correct on June 24) I will give hints which should give it away. Remember Alex Nicol is a gunfighter. The gunfight is at the first part of the movie and takes place early in morning. And don't guess oversleeping and lazziness because that is not correct. Surely this is a giveaway now. I am giving these hints to be fair to those that haven't seen the movie so the game can move on.

She said he was hungover and the answer I was looking for was the he was passed out drunk so I will accept her answer! Way to Go Ranger Mom! You get the next question. But everyone be sure to watch Dawn At Socorro on June 24 on TCM at 8:30 A.M. and if you can't watch it record it or get someone to record it! Good Job Ranger Mom!

Bobby Riggs beat Court and lost to King. This did a lot for women's sports (even though when you consider that Riggs was about 56 and it was obsurd (spelling?) for him to play women half his age and in thier prime but he won one anyway and what the heck the American public and tv fell for it. But it do a lot to advance women's sport and tennis in general plus it made money for Bobby Riggs. I remember when the King vs Riggs match was held and it was obvious that it was going to be one sided and Howard Cossell was telling everyone what a once in a lifetime this match was and to not switch over to watch Bonnie And Clyde on another station. Heck he gave a plug for the movie and people seeing how one sided it was probably switched channels right away. Another Cossell blunder. LOL

Phil C

Sorry Old. You got it wrong this time. You have a point but it is up to the asker to determine if you got it to his satisfaction. For example on my question Ranger Mom did not specifically give the answer I was looking for but it was close enough to what I wanted and in my judgement I gave it to her. I will agree if you will to let the asker determine if you or I or right and I will yield to the decision. How about you?

Phil C
06-07-2004, 11:58 AM
Playing against men! Heck Old if someone said they played tennis they would have been right too. Bull wanted the specific player. Of course I saw both matches on tv so I had an advantage. Let's let Bull determine which one of us gets credit but you have to know that some questions have reasonable implied type answers that the questioner wants. It is like when someone asks how many soldiers England sent to American during the revolutionary war you know he wants a specific number but someone could be right by just saying considerable more than the number that went back. :)

Phil C
06-07-2004, 12:02 PM
Another thing Old you said playing against men. But you didn't say what. It could have been checkers or cards. It is reasonable to assume that they both probably played cards or checkers against men once in their lives. See the question has a definite implied answer that I recognized that he wanted the name of the man tennis player Bobby Riggs. By the way Bobby Riggs had won at Wimberton in the 1930s I believe.

Congratulations Old! YOu got it. It wasn't as specific as I wanted but was close enough. The answer was snakes - rattlesnakes to be specific. What happened is that the Sadist was chasing her and she ran by an old boarded up well and he jumped across the well to catch her and kill her with his knife. He fell through the boards into the well where a bunch of rattlesnakes were shedding. Unhappy with the intrusion they proceeded to doom him thus the woman was saved by a miracle. :)

It may not be what he wants but Texas and Ohio State had been fighting it out for No. 1 all year and had perfect record. Texas got beat in the Cotton Bowl and Ohio State lost in the rose bowl. Because the two top teams lost a bowl game Nebraska got the national championship by the back door route.

Sorry Bull. My mistake. I was thinking of the 1970 season. You meant the 1971 season and the bowls played in January 1972. What happened after the season is that one conference (The Big Eight) had the top three ranked teams in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado. They had a joke in the big eight after that season that 1+2=3=8.

Phil C
06-08-2004, 01:12 PM
I realized this answer was what you wanted right after I posted and was going to correct myself quickly but sure enough aol was acting up today and kicking me off so I had to go to my computer with yahoo. What happened that year is that the top four teams were considered to be Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama and Auburn. Nebraska beat Oklahoma in a close game during the season and Alabama beat Auburn. The two winners played each other and the two losers also. Nebraska whipped Alabama and Oklahoma whipped Auburn showing the the national championship that year was decided when the two big eight teams Nebraska and Oklahoma played. Colorado had a good year also and won their bowl game so they were voted No. 3 thus giving the Big Eight the top three ranked teams in the country in the final polls. It will probably never happen again.

sinton66

It's 31 flavors based on 31 days in a month.

sinton66
06-08-2004, 09:30 PM
I believe they carry 21 permanent flavors, one flavor of the month, some of 5 different seasonal flavors, and some of 13 different regional flavors. And yes, the 31 was based on a different flavor every day of the month. They also rotate the flavors out to the tune of about 100 flavors per year. They have close to 1,000 flavors in all.
