Maybe my wording wasn't very good. An example would be if New England, last years champs, would of drafted White from OU, last years Heisman winner.

It wasn't Dorsett, it wasn't that long ago and Dallas didn't win the Super Bowl the same year that Dorsett won the heisman

Thank you High School Fan. This is one for the college historians. During the 40s Army had two great running backs on the same team, Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis called Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Both won the Heisman Trophy once and were on two National Championship Teams and there was a movie about their time at Army called West Point Story. During this movie a coach went to Army to see about playing in a bowl game. The coach was shown some game films with the two running backs. After seeing the films the coach obviously didn't want to meet Army in a bowl game and rushed out the door so fast that the secretary said "I thought it was Blanchard and Davis!" It was a great scene of the movie but it was false. Why?

PhiI C
07-28-2004, 11:34 PM
I guess this one is too tough so I will ask another one. The answer was that like Notre Dame at the time Army refused to play in any bowl games. So there would never have been a coach in that office to run out on them. Still I guess the embellishment made the movie interesting. Anyway let me ask another question more current. Texas plays Arkansas this year and their was talk about honoring the participates of the Texas vs Arkansas shootout in 1969 but this was dropped I guess due to the hillbillies opposing it due to their hatred of Texas. They will honor the Arkansas national championship team of 1964 though. Ironically what other team have the Razorbacks failed to honor? This one should be easy enough. :)

PhiI C
07-29-2004, 12:07 AM
Ok maybe this one is too obvious which makes it hard but it was the basketball team that won the national championship in 1994 or 1993. Nolan Richardson is sueing the University is why it hasn't been honored even thought they should have honored the players. Oh well! Anyway another question. In 1961 Sonny Gibbs of TCU threw a long td pass that beat Texas 6 to 0 in the biggest upset of the year and cost Texas the National Championship in college football that year. Who caught the pass?

Phil C
07-29-2004, 09:51 AM

Your answer is probably what he is looking for Ranger Mom. Wish I could have got on earlier and beat you to it. :) The movie was Mackintosh and TJ and was filmed in Texas. In that movie Andy Robinson was the murderer that hung himself. He also was the killer in Dirty Harry with Clint Eastwood. The Roy Rogers movie came out in 1975. The only fault I had in it was that a guy got bit by a coyote and no one thought to get him to the doctor to get rabies vacanations not evern Roy Rogers:hairpunk: And sure enough that is what killed him. Man if it had been me I would have been screaming for them to get me to the doctor or hospital right away. But otherwise it was a good movie.

Of course if you want to get technical Roy Rogers' last movie was with Kenny Rogers as the Gambler in The Adventure Continues that was a made for tv movie in 1983. I assume it was filmed in California even though I don't know. Rogers was in it only briefly and ironically played a drunk! Imagine Roy Rogers last movie he plays a drunk!

Hey Ranger Chuck Howley is also the first defensive player to win the MVP in the Super Bowl. The thing is that Chuck was voted the mvp with two minutes to play in the game. Had they waited till it was over they might have given it to Mike Curtis of Baltimore because he played a good game and intercepted the Craig Morton pass with about a minute to play and returned it to the Cowboy 32 setting up the Colts in field goal position to win in the last few seconds when they did. Cowboys had a third and 20 against a great Colt Defense on their end of the field. I never could understand why they tried a passing play instead of running the clock and going into overtime. It was a game of mistakes and fumbles and Dallas made the last mistake that cost them the game.

The earliest I have found was Jim Ryun of Witchita, Kansas who broke the 4 minute barrier in 1964.

The Fab Four Under Four
The Only Four Top American High School Sub Four-Minute Milers Gather for
First Time to Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships

San Diego, Calif., Dec. 8, 2003?The only four American high school runners to break a sub four-minute mile will meet for the first time ever in San Diego, Calf., Dec. 11-13, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals.

The four men, Jim Ryun, the first high school runner to run a sub four-minute mile in 1964 (3:59, record of 3:55 in 1965), Alan Webb, current high school mile record holder (3:53, 2001), along with Tim Danielson (3:59, 1966) and Marty Liquori (3:59, 1967) have never appeared together as a group until now. They are gathering to provide inspiration and support to the 64 elite high school runners who are competing in the 25th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals.

The athletes will be participating in various Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals events throughout the weekend. On Friday, Dec. 12 at 6:30p.m., they will hold a panel discussion with the 64 high school runners, coaches and parents at the event's host site, the Hotel Del Coronado. They will also support the runners at the championship race on Sat., Dec. 13 at Balboa Park. The girls race starts at 9a.m. and the boys race begins at 10:15a.m at Morley Field.

"We are honored to have these four record-achieving athletes join us in celebrating the 25th running of the National Finals," said Geoff Sills, vice president, brand director for Foot Locker. "These are the high school running legends that the students participating in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships look up to and aspire to become. And, in fact, some of our runners do."

Webb is a two-time top finisher in the Foot Locker National Finals, placing eighth in 1999, and second in 2000. At the age of 20, he is barely older than the runners competing at this year's National Finals, but his accomplishments are impressive. Webb holds the national high school record for the indoor mile, outdoor mile, and 1,500m. A resident of Reston, Va., he is pursuing a professional running career while attending George Mason University. "I'm really looking forward to the Foot Locker National Finals weekend," said Webb. "It's quite an honor to be included with these running legends. The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships is the pinnacle event in a prep runner's career so I'm really happy to be a part of it again."

Ryun was the first high schooler to break the four-minute mile in 1964. After clocking several sub four-minute miles in 1965, he set the high school mile record of 3:55, which stood for 36 years until Webb broke it in 2001. The three-time Olympian is now a Congressman for his home state of Kansas. "The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships have provided opportunities for thousands of young people aspiring towards excellence in running," said Ryun. "I'm honored to be a part of the 25th anniversary celebration of this race."

Danielson was the second high school runner to beat a four-minute mile and he did it only once in 3:59 in 1966. "I feel privileged to be a part of the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships," he said. "I hope that the camaraderie of history's four high school sub four- minute milers will provide some inspiration and insight for these young runners to help in achieving their goals." Danielson is now an aerospace engineer living in San Diego, Calif.

Liquori also ran a sub four-minute mile in high school only once, in 1967 in a time of 3:59. He went on to set American records in 2,000m and 5,000m. He continued his career outside of running as a television broadcaster who has covered six Olympic games, 25 New York City Marathons and eight Ironman Triathlons. Living in Gainesville, Fla., he is now the host and executive producer of an endurance sports and events show on ESPN. "I'm looking forward to learning about the similarities the four of us may have in our training and sharing this for the first time with a newer generation of runners," said Liquori.

The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships is comprised of four regional 5K races which take place across the country. The Midwest (Kenosha, Wis.), Northeast (Bronx, N.Y.) and South (Charlotte, N.C.) regional races were Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 and the West (Walnut, Calif.) regional race is Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. More than 10,000 of the nation's leading high school runners compete in the regional meets. The top eight finishers in each of the boys and girls seeded races qualify for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif. on Dec. 13, 2003.

Presenting sponsor of the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships is Nike. Local sponsor for the National Finals is the San Diego Sports Council.

With more than 2,000 stores worldwide, Foot Locker is the world's largest athletic footwear and apparel retailer and leading destination for running product. Foot Locker is part of Foot Locker, Inc., a specialty retailer that operates more than 3,600 stores in 16 countries in North America, Europe and Australia.

My earliest childhood memory is of watching Top Gun in an old theatre in Yoakum...

In 1997, two teams from the same district captured state titles...

Which teams are they and what district did they come from?

(Hint: in 1997, 3A and below were still "One State Championship" classifications... So these teams were either in 4A or 5A...

earl campbell

PhiI C
08-16-2004, 09:51 PM
Good guess Jason. He could probably have said it about Earl but it wasn't him. Earl was a great running back and in my opinion was as good as Emmitt and Barry and even OJ. No telling what could have happened if he had played with a team like SF or Pittsburgh or Dallas. Houston used him up in my opinion even though he had several great years there. It got to where the three offensive plays was Earl to the right, Earl to the left and Earl up the middle. Of couse when you have a great player like that it is hard to not use him.

I must have asked a stumper! Anyway to keep the thread going I am going to give a hint that will obviously give you the answer. There are a lot of running backs Royal could have said it about but he said it only about one. Hint: 1961 and that should be an obvious giveaway!

Abner Doubleday is widely credited with inventing baseball. So much, in fact, that they put the baseball hall of fame in his hometown of Cooperstown, New York. Everyone now knows that baseball was actually invented by Alexander Cartwright as a variation of a British game called Rounders.

Question: In the battle of Fort Sumter South Carolina, the first shots of the Civil War, who was the general for the North?
