Here are my thoughts on this: Respect everyone and fear no one. I feel it is disrespectful to your opponent to brashly predict the outcome of the contest as if it is a foregone conclusion. Now, I didn't say you shouldn't be confident in yourself or your team, but to verbalize it (or type it on a message board) as if it's a foregone conclusion and the game isn't even worth playing, is disrespectul. It's different to give an opinion like "I think this is how the game will come out". That's why we are here. I know even some from Celina will disagree with me, but you will never see me make brash predictions in advance of our games. Again, just my opinion. Everyone has one, right?

Oh but wise MN95 we are all guilty of coming on these boards and predicting scores. I myself have nailed the past 4 weeks within a 10% margin of error. the difference is that now we (Celina) believe that this game is a war and not a US vrs. Iraq kinda war but a Cold War were both sides can destroy the other. LH has never met their Waterloo so they are mired in a Napolean complex.

My bet is that the bravado that you hear is really just whistling past the graveyard. I for one would never project a 3TD margin by either team at this point, but if you review that has been done. It is time to speak softly and carry a big stick. I am OUT!

See ya Saturday

I can tell that we aren't going to agree on this. So, let's just call it quits.

We do too...funny that you should say that. Every game, I always whisper a prayer for the safety and well-being, and I always whisper "Lord, be a Panther tonight". He loves all his little children (gold and purple, orange and white...we all know the tune)...so I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt to ask!

On that note, God Bless us All!:)

This reminds me of the Saturday Night Live sketch when Will Ferrell is the lumberjack...

[ open on ESPN2 graphic ]

[ dissolve to Vince Thomas standing in front of a wooded area in Snohomish, Washington ]

Vince Thomas: Welcome back! To ESPN2's coverage of the 1998 Lumberjack Classic. And I'm here with Vince Thomas, our champion -- [ Will Ferrell steps into the frame, confused, as Kelsey stops, gleams at the cue cards and corrects himself ] I'm Vince Thomas, rather. Here with our champion, Clive Sundstrum. [ holds the microphone in front of Ferrell's face, but he fails to respond still looking dazed. Kelsey grins, then pulls the microphone back. ] Clive, your -- [ Kelsey cracks up, as Ferrell, looking disgruntled, begins to walks off-frame ] How does it feel! [ holds the microphone back in Ferrell's direction ] Come on.

Clive Sundstrum: [ returns to frame ] Uh - well, first of all, I - I have to give thanks to the Lord for blessing me today. Uh - I was swinging great, my cuts were clean, and, with Jesus Christ at my side, I pulled it off.

Vince Thomas: Tell us about the pole-climbing competititon, that is traditionally your weakest event. But, this year, different story!

Clive Sundstrum: Yeah. Well, uh - I was halfway up the pole, I was getting kind of tired, and, uh, suddenly, just like He's done so many times before, Jesus Christ, Eternal Son of God, climbed into my arms.

Vince Thomas: Jesus did?

Clive Sundstrum: Right. Jesus. And, uh - once He was in my arms, I just, uh - zoooom!! - flew right up the pole. That was all Jesus.

Vince Thomas: Okay. Wow! Quite a display.

Clive Sundstrum: Yeah. Yeah, I know. Some day He'll sit in judgement over us all, but.. for now, He's helping me win lumberjack contests. It's great to have Him aboard!

Vince Thomas: Well, now, you hit a rough spot in the underhand chopping event --

Clive Sundstrum: Yep.

Vince Thomas: A few mis-hits, you swung an axe handle. What happened?

Clive Sundstrum: Yeah. I gotta say, Jesus really blew that one. Uh.. I know I had a -- He had a long day - a plane went down, there was an earthquake somewhere, I think - uh - but I'm trying to win a title here! I can't afford to have Jesus fall asleep at the wheel! Okay?

Vince Thomas: Yeah. You and Jesus seemed to have pulled it together after that, though?

Clive Sundstrum: Yeah! Good ol' Jesus. He's a clutch player! The guy's a winner. He's got a lot of heart.

Vince Thomas: Right. Right. Joining us now, is second-place finisher, Bill Fromph, from Grisham, Oregon. Bill. Wow. Touch luck today, huh? What happened?

Bill Fromph: Uh, well - you can't expect to win a classic like this without a little help from, uh - J.C. on your side. You know? What can I say? I guess, uh, Clive's always hogging Jesus!

Vince Thomas: Clive, how do you respond to the allegation that you are a Jesus hog?

Clive Sundstrum: Hey! Hey, I'm not the boss of Jesus, okay? If the Son of God wants to help me climb poles and roll dudes off logs - hey, I'm all for it!

Bill Fromph: Hey, that's a bunch of crap, man! You know - if he gets Jesus, we should get Jesus! Yeah! He always gets all the Jesus! Give us some Jesus!!

Clive Sundstrum: Hey, you shut up!! Don't make me get Jesus on you!!

Bill Fromph: Alright, alright, I'm cool, bro. I'm cool. [ exits ]

Vince Thomas: [ stunned ] Once again - the power and partisanship of Jesus Christ, reeking havoc here at the Lumberjack Championship. Let's take a look at the standings.

[ dissolve to the Standings board:

lumberjack classic

1. clive sundstrum/jesus
2. bill fromph
3. jim simpson
4. tim rogers
5. boyd hale
6. grant le saux
7. todd greene
8. mitch weinstein ]

Vince Thomas V/O: As you can see, finishing first is the team of Sundstrum and Christ; Rogers, the Episcopalean, placed fourth; and, once again, coming dead last: Mitch Weinstein.

[ dissolve back to Vince Thomas with Clive Sundstrum and an appropriately-dressed Mitch Weinstein ]

Vince Thomas: Mitch joins us now. Mitch? This has got to hurt, huh?

Mitch Weinstein: Well, uh - I've given Yahweh every chance you could ask for, but, uh.. he just wasn't giving me the juice. [ smiles ] But, uh, the good news is, I found Jesus!

Vince Thomas: Really?

Mitch Weinstein: Yeah! Uh - He was hanging out at the Gatorade booth, and, uh, you know, if all goes well, Jesus might be playing for Team Weinstein next year!

Vince Thomas: Well! Great news! [ chuckles heartily, as Mitch exits ] One mroe question, Clive: You've hinted at retirement, will you be back next year?

Clive Sundstrum: Uh - well, I'm gonna relax for a while, maybe Jesus and I will go to a theme park. Well.. then, we'll see. [ exits ]

Vince Thomas: Encouraging words, from a great champion. That's it! From the Lumberjack Classic. I'd like to thank.. Jesus Christ, for giving my brain and tongue the strength to conduct this interview. Back after this! [ rolls his eyes ]

[ dissolve back to ESPN2 graphic ]

[ fade ]

Honestly, I don't see Celina beating Liberty Hill in this one. It COULD happen, but I just don't see it happening. I think the Panthers move on to the championship game to meet Carthage in all probability. I haven't seen either of these teams this year, meaning LH or Celina, but in my opinion, the winner of this one will have their hands FULL with Carthage. I'll go on record now and say I think Carthage will be the next 3A Division II State Champion. I've been wrong before, though,...........:D

I think you need to look at specifics here. Overall defense against what kind of Offense. For example NB was 12 against Kaufman and gave up 21 points. We were 13 and gave up 0 to the starters then 6 when we had some subs in JV subs at that.
Also type of O. Yours is an in tight running scheme such as Kennedale or Kaufman. Obviously better but similar. Be carefull bandying about those numbers without looking at matchups. We matchup well with LH. Did 2 years ago as well. And that was a great game. I am expecting the same thing. Another doozie that might go either way.

I really hope you didn't stay up all night thinking up this angle. Sweetwater's offense was ranked 55th and Wylie's offense 31st, both much lower than ours. But keep watching football, stick with it and you will understand someday how this could impact a score as well.

By the way, not that it matters, Massey's predicts 30-28 LH, a very close game.

We have some linemen out with injuries, but that seems to be the story of this season, and they have been out for a few weeks.

We are not 100%, but no team really is at this stage of the season.

What's their 100 time? Their 4th 100 time in one hour? Mile? Is bigger still better?

OK, I'll help you out here since you are obviously a novice. If your offense can't move the ball, they consistently give the other team great field position, which makes it tough on your defense, no matter how highly they are ranked, to keep the other team from scoring. Now, you probably won't comprehend this all at once. It might take some time to sink in. Maybe you could go color a few pages of SpongeBob so it doesn't overwhelm you.

Regarding our defense, I decline to comment because I have a close personal relationship with one of the "weaknesses" of our defense.

Just to circumvent anyone chastising me for mentioning Prosper, I only chose themin this attempt at humor because they happen to be our closest rivals. My son told me last night that all of our team signed a big banner wishing them good luck in their State Championship game this Saturday. Another classy move from our coaches. So you will graduate 19 starting seniors? Wow. Next year will be a real test for your program, though if I remember correctly, your JV doesn't lose much do they?

Someone will have to help me out with ours, but I will take a stab.

So since their offense is so terrible they managed to still have the 1st and 2nd ranked defense..or did they factor in their terrible offenses in to their ranking...in other words their Defense is terrible.

Not many people get that the algorithm he uses calculates power and ranking and strength of schedule. The offensive and defensive numbers are derived from the process but are not true calculations in the sense of his ranking system. Talent+Turnover Margin = Victory (99% of the time). We all like to talk about heart and determination and will and other intangibles that make us feel better about our team. We like catchy slogans that we can put on motivational posters and little sticky notes on our computer. In the end, it comes down to who has the most talent coupled with turnovers.

Now, will, desire, hard work and determination can help mold an athlete into one with more talent, but it doesn't happen on Friday or Saturday, it happens in the offseason and on Monday-Thursday.

To say that any team wins because they have more desire or will during the game is attributing qualities to your own team that may not exist, and is a slap to the other team. Think about this...by saying that Liberty Hill won by determination last Saturday or will or heart or desire, isn't that an insult to Bridgeport? Doesn't that say, "Hey, your kids don't have the guts that our kids have" or "Our kids wanted to win more than your kids"?

In reality, Liberty Hill beat Bridgeport because they had more talent, and they received a lot of turnovers in the second half. Now, if Bridgeport had fewer injuries , would their talent be higher across the board? Sure, it would have. However, it is more sexy to say that Liberty Hill "wanted it more" instead of saying "We won because our talent was better than your talent, which may have been affected by injuries".

We all love to pull out the special moments about our teams and attribute superhuman qualities to them, when in essence it comes down to who has the most talent and who turns over the ball the least amount of times.

More Talent + Fewer Turnovers = Victory

Well said, coachkiss.

OldBison, I swear you are living proof that age has absolutely no correlation with wisdom. The LH boys obviously had more talent and capitalized from Bridgeport's turnovers, but one thing this year's Bull team DID NOT have a shortage of was heart. BTW, is Navasota still playing?

One other thing. Those at the LH/BP game saw that the Bulls QB was limping on a bad ankle the entire game, but one thing they did not know was that Cameron played with a broken middle finger on his throwing hand since the opening weekend of dove season. Makes perfect sense to me 95. Oh wait I just found it...

FACT: The '08 Bobcats are 125x better than the '06 team. They have more 1st downs per passing attempt to the right than and, what's this, 25 more defensive stops in the 2nd half of the 3rd quarter than the '06 team did. Oh my, is this even going to be a game now??

To the Bridgeport poster that are offended, I never said Bridgeport did not play with heart and did not have the desire to win. NO DOUBT THEY DID!!!! What I said was that in the weeks leading up to the game with LH, Bridgeport posters kept talking about all the weapons they had and how LH would be able to stop some but not all. I said then and I'll say now, I heard the same things from my team when they played LH in the same round last year and got it shoved down my throat. LH could have easily laid down or panic could have set in in the first half of that game. But, they continued to play the LH system with total dedication to the system that has brought them this far. They stepped up and took control of the line of scrimmage. Yes, the Bridgeport injuries had a effect on the way the game was played, but the thing that impressed me was the way LH "imposed its will on Bridgeport in the second half. It was total control of the game, a game that they did not appear to have control of for the first half.

I am not insulting Bridgeport in any way, the kids had an awesome year and might have been the State Champions in Division 1 if they were in that bracket. They played hard all year and gave super effort in this game, but the ability of LH to play their game and force Bridgeport to change their game plan played a big role.

If that is insulting to some posters on this board, I'm sorry.

Solid?? Now that's funny!

My opinion, like I've said many time, is I don't know who is going to win. I have seen both teams play and they are both really good. I know who I want to win, but am I betting on that, nope.

I think you're having a hard time coming to the conclusion that their is no obvious answer who the better team is. You keep trying to find it through other people's ratings, 2 year old stats, and unplayed games. I think you need to come to the realization that the better team will not be decided until the game is over.

It is your opinion, which you are welcome to, but it is not a Fact.

We are and would have been slight underdogs to LH the past 2 years. What this really tells me is that LH is not as good as last year and nor are we. The differences are relative and within a margin of error. Per Massey matchups...

08 LH would lose to 07 LH 40-21
08 CB would lose to 07 LH 39-21
08 CB would lose to 08 LH 30-28
07 CB would lose to 07 LH 32-30
07 CB would beat 08 LH 37-20

Pretty consistant difference of 2 points or anybodies game!

OK, here is my honest opinion. We have lost 3 times this year, but are much better now than we were then. LH is undefeated, so has to be the favorite. No argument from me. Do I want to win. YES! Do I think we can win? YES Will I be shocked if we lose? NO! Will I be proud or our team whatever the result? YES!

Thanks for the kind words. I AM very proud, and not just for whatever plays made on the field, but for the dedication and year round commitment it takes to be a part of this program. I played 4 years of college baseball and I also played football and basketball in high school, but I never had to put in the time, at any level, that is required of our boys. I would guess LH's commitment level is similar. A completely different level of HS football that I played in the 70's.

And, I was NEVER under the kind of pressure these boys feel to carry on the tradition.

Barely, 21-17. Unbelievable game. Quan broke two and no one came within 5 yards of touching him. Another couple minutes and he would have won the game for them.

Maybe so...but I think it's pretty much agreed upon that a rainy gameday usually does not favor a passing team. I guess it can be argued either way.

When it comes to the running game, a slick ball wouldn't be any more of a problem for us than you guys. Now the passing game...

But I don't think it matters cause the forecast for Midlothian Saturday is cloudy with a 10% of rain and a 20mph wind from the South. The wind will pretty much be blowing the length of the field, though slightly toward the Celina side.

Good Morning to all. Since we are FINALLY starting to near the game I though I would look back through the 1200 or so posts to take in what's been said this week. As I read through, a few themes occured over and over again.

1. I think there has been less smack talk in this thread so far than the first 45 minutes of the LH/B'port game.

2. The fans from each town have a tremendous amount of respect for the other team.

3. This is going to be an awesome game.

I'm sure it is no different in LH, but the Celina boys are very excited. This is the game they have been waiting for for two years. Additionally, I think this is the game everyone has been waiting for since last December. I really hope we are able to continue this recent rivalry, whether it be in preseason or playoffs. The respectful fans from both sides have made this week leading up to the game more fun than any we've had this year. Thanks to all.

Good article previewing the game:

Rematch with Liberty Hill has potential to be another classic

BY ANDREW MAY, Staff Writer

| Text Size | Print Version | E-mail This Story

In 50 seasons as a UIL 11-man football team, Celina has been to the state championship game nine times. Eight of those appearances have resulted in rings. The one that got away came in the 2006 title tilt against Liberty Hill.

Bobcat faithful are still haunted by the events that unfolded at Waco’s Floyd Casey Stadium on that chilly December evening. Celina, on a 31-game win streak, was favored to win its record eighth state championship, partly because of its big-game savvy and the fact that the Panthers were making their title debut.

After storming back from a 19-7 deficit in the second half to tie the game with 3:38 remaining, the Bobcats took possession with a chance to bleed the clock and kick a potential game-winning field goal. Oh, the irony.

Charley Walrep, now a senior, was stopped just short of the line to gain on fourth down in Panther territory. Liberty Hill took over, using a 13-yard run from quarterback Thomas Perrin before Brent Bode picked up 30 more down the left side of the field. With six ticks remaining in regulation, Gio Magallon, who hadn’t been called on all season, booted a historic 31-yard field goal for a 22-19 victory.

For Celina, it was the only playoff loss in the last four seasons. For Liberty Hill, it was the start of something special. The Panthers enter Saturday’s 2008 title game having won 38 straight games, including consecutive championships in both the Class 3A big and small divisions. But as Liberty Hill (14-0) attempts to join the nine other teams in Texas history that have won three straight - Celina is one of three schools along with Sealy and Fort Hancock to win four in a row - head coach Jerry Vance insists his team hasn’t reached the pinnacle yet.

“We’re trying to get to that point where Celina is,” Vance said. “When people talk about football in the state of Texas, obviously they talk about Celina. We’d like to be in that mix, too.”

The highly anticipated rematch could be same song, second verse. As was the case two seasons ago, Celina and Liberty Hill make their living in the trenches. Both teams prefer to rush the ball and have a less than difficult time stopping the run.

Where the Bobcats failed in the 2006 contest was in opposing territory. They were stopped on downs five times against a stingy Panther defense. Waldrep and Troy McCartney were both underclassmen in that meeting and have since blossomed into two of the state’s top backs. Vance is well aware that the key to halting Celina’s run at a ninth title rests with sound tackling. The Bobcats have chewed up opponents all season with yards after contact.

“Obviously the running backs in Celina are legendary, I mean we saw them when they were sophomores and they’ve grown up for sure,” Vance said. “We’re going to have to play probably our best game all year.”

Defensively, junior middle linebacker Caleb Lavey (6-3, 225) is always a headache for opposing offenses. Lavey, who is being recruited by Florida, LSU, Penn State, Texas, Arkansas, Texas Tech, TCU and Texas A&M, leads the Bobcats in tackles, having rung up more than 100 stops each of the last three seasons. Vance wouldn’t divulge his plan to slow the ball hawk, but did say the Panther offense wouldn’t change because of a single player.

“We’re going to do what we do,” he said. “I think if you game plan that much and one guy dictates what you’re going to do, then you’re probably beat already.”

Taking nothing away from Carthage or Giddings, the two other schools still standing in Division II, the Celina-Liberty Hill victor will be favored to win it all. In some senses, this is the first of potentially two championship games. It just so happens that the label is ‘state semifinal.’ Rest assured the Bobcats are doing anything but looking past the Panthers and ahead to a ninth crown.

“We really don’t say much, we just try to do our business. We try to lock in on the week we’re in. It’s one step at a time, like a ladder, you’re just going up the ladder,” McCartney said. “We’re focused on the week ahead, we’re not focused on two weeks ahead, we’re not focused on a state championship, we’re focused on next week.”

Vance, whose team rallied from a 27-14 deficit midway through the second quarter to beat Bridgeport 48-27 in the Region I final, sees Saturday’s game in Midlothian again coming down to the wire and a situation where the team that has the ball last prevails.

“It very well could be. I think it’s going to be a great football game,” Vance said. “The team that makes the fewest mistakes is going to be the one that’s going to come out the winner. For us in particular, we’re going to have to play our best ball game we’ve ever played.”

Consider that true for Celina as well. This one has all the makings of another instant classic.

I believe your Coach Vance is well respected in your community, and deservedly so. In looking through his comments, nowhere do I find him "manning up" and making any brash predictions. Seems like he has lots of respect for his opponent. Some, not all, of you could learn something from this man.
