Still Alive: Borger, Pampa, Seminole, Levelland
Key Games: Seminole at Borger, Pampa at Levelland
Analysis: Lubbock Estacado’s season is over. The Matadors clinched the district title with a win over Seminole last week. The rest of the district is in chaos, but the solution is quite simple. The winners of the key games listed above get in the playoffs. The losers, well, that comes down to a head-to-head tiebreaker. So yes, even if a team loses this weekend, it’s still very much alive for the final postseason spot. All four teams currently have 1-2 district records.
District 2-4A DI
Clinched Berth: Andres, Clint, Fabens
Still Alive: Mountain View, San Elizario
Key Games: Andrews at Clint, San Elizario at Mountain View
Analysis: Andrews and Clint will duke it out for the district title. Both teams head into this weekend’s game with 3-0 records. The loser gets the No. 2 seed. Fabens played its final game last week and locked up third place. The battle for the fourth and final playoff spot is between San Elizario and Mountain View. It’s basically a play-in game.
District 3-4A DI
Clinched Berth: Abilene Wylie, Big Spring, Stephenville, Brownwood
Still Alive: None
Key Games: Abilene Wylie at Stephenville, Brownwood at Big Spring
Analysis: We know which teams are getting in, but where will they be seeded? Abilene Wylie can clinch the top seed with a win over Stephenville. If Stephenville wins the game and Big Spring beats Brownwood, there will be a three-way tie for first place. The former seems like the more likely scenario. If it plays out that way, seeding will look like this: 1. Abilene Wylie 2. Big Spring 3. Stephenville 4. Brownwood.
District 4-4A DI
Clinched Berth: Graham, Decatur
Still Alive: Mineral Wells, WF Hirschi, Gainesville, Burkburnett
Key Games: Decatur at Graham, Gainesville at Mineral Wells, WF Hirschi at Burkburnett
Analysis: Graham and Decatur will clash for the district title. The winner gets the No. 1 seed while the loser gets the No. 2 seed. The final two playoffs spots are up for grabs. If Mineral Wells beats Gainesville, it clinches the No. 3 seed. If Mineral Wells beats Gainesville and Burkurnett upsets WF Hirschi, there will be a three-way tie for the final playoff spot. There is still a lot to be decided in this district.

yeah it really needs more stands for sure ....Cap says 3800 but I don't think so.. parking does stink...BUT it is very cozy and has a small town feel to it..Plus it is in the middle of town...Other than more stands I love it! small town Americana.....classic!

In a first, the entire Graham Steers defense was named our Texas Ford Player(s) of the Week for Week 10 of the high school football season!

In a complete team effort, the #8 Steers held Texoma's leading rusher, Hirschi's Cedric Battle, to just 31 rushing yards on 25 carries Friday night at Memorial Stadium. They also intercepted the Huskies three times, giving them a total of 16 in nine games so far this season.

Senior Landon Gonzales spoke for the Steer defense as they accepted their award.

He gave up several sacks or TFLs to Langley And McWhorter when they stunted. Rest of line was quite good..QB is a great scrammbler got off some awesome crazy throws...They have very good receivers great hands and can run after the catch

Steers claim district title in overtime

Playoff update: Graham will face Brownwood in Stephenville on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. for the first round of the playoffs.

As Nick Martin stood near midfield on Newton Field amidst a sea of Graham coaches, fans and players, he couldn't do anything but smile.

High fives and hugs came pouring in from friends and fans who wanted to congratulate the running back who had put the finishing touches on another district title for the Steers.

Moments earlier, facing first-and-goal from the Decatur 8-yard line, Martin took the hand off and sprinted into the end zone off the right side of the offensive line.

“It's kind of a blur,” Martin said. “I just saw green grass so I ran. It was a good feeling.”

That blurry moment capped off a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback that forced overtime against Decatur where Graham captured the District 4 title, 54-48.

With 5:06 left in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Steers would have to settle for the district's second seed. Decatur quarterback Justin Myers had just thrown his sixth touchdown of the night, a 54-yard completion to Payton McAlister, for a 48-34 lead. Defensive back Jorge Martinez followed that up with an interception on the next play.


Decatur had the ball at Graham's 26-yard line with 2:56 left in the game and complete control. The Steers' defense stepped up to the challenge, forcing the Eagles into a third-and-11. But a defensive holding call gave the Eagles new life.

The Steers' defense stiffened again and allowed four yards in three plays, getting the ball back to the offense at the 20-yard line with 2 minutes left.

Landry Turner opened the drive with a 16-yard run followed by completions to Derek Sides (13 yards), Connor Smith (17). A holding call pushed the Steers back to the 44-yard line, but Casey Cannon's 29-yard catch moved the ball to the 15. Turner hit Sides again to cut the lead to 48-40 with 46 seconds left.

Then it came down to an onside kick and the foot of Skeeter Buchanan.

Buchanan's kick landed in the hands of a Decatur Eagle, but before he hit the ground, the ball popped loose. Boehner Cottongame jumped on it.

“It's more than a miracle, but we did it,” Buchanan said. “I don't know how, but it's something else.”

I hate talkin about other peoples kids but these guy are the most unsportsman like team out here. The coaches encourage this kind of play..Even telling the team not to take a knee when someone is on the other team is hurt..last yr during the freshmen game they played in Graham.. Freshmen mind you.. They scored a TD then ran to mid field and made a pissin motion on our Steer logo...freshmen....lol..So I hope y'all crush them 65-0..

We got stuck with that crew for every game this yr except Bwood n Wylie.. even last friday.. never fails we get at least one flag evey deep drive....lol.. not taken anything away from any other team.. but yeah hair pulling for sure..

No...lol I am writing a book on the Graham Steers... The last three seasons.. The real story is off the field not many people know about but Of-Coarse the on field stuff is important too..hehe... My oldest son graduated two years ago.. and my younger sons are in grade school... This stuff I put up on here is because, I have grown to love many of the young men through interviews and chatting.. They are wonderful examples of Texas High School football... I love the story and It must be told...

Most of the Sr. this year have been on all three teams and it plays an important part of the story... The story is to be told from the players perspective... Not the coaches or parents or even fans.. I am going to be as factual as possible.. Real players names numbers and stories... I have accumulated many wonderful off field stories that will be the heart of the book.. I hope to use pictures and video in it as well...doing my best to think outside the box.. I know I miss putting those pads on every Friday and I know a lot of y'all do as well..I would love for everyone to read it and hopefully trigger found memories from your days. Or maybe of your kids n such...I am putting everything into it.. It is driving me.. I love it!

What was funny about this game the coaches for Decatur were high fiving each other thinking they had the district championship before the final kickoff of regulation. Like my papa always said don't count your chickens before your eggs hatch. Great game keep it up.

Steers advance to area round, beat Brownwood 52-11

Playoff update: Graham will face Seminole in the area game next Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m in Graham.

Landon Gonzales stood at his the Graham 9-yard line waiting for Brownwood to kickoff so he could get the momentum back on Graham's side.

The Lions had just cut the Steers lead to 26-11 on a 1-yard run by Brandon Diaz with 1:49 left before halftime. Brownwood had put together its first long drive of the game and needed another spark.

But Gonzales snuffed out anything that was brewing for Brownwood, sprinting up the left sideline for a 91-yard touchdown.

“I was ready to go back on defense,” Gonzales said. “Luckily the ball came to me and I scored. I was exhausted after that.”

Gonzales had plenty of time to recover during halftime so he could help the Steers shutout Brownwood in the second half en route to a 52-11 bi-district win.

The Steers looked like a different team from the one that snuck out the overtime win last Friday against Decatur for the right to play Brownwood. Winning in such an exciting fashion and failing to score in the third quarter served as a wake up call for the Steers, offensive coordinator Casey Dacus said.


“The best lesson that we learned was that we gotta stay with it and treat it like its 0-0 all the time,” Dacus said. “Keep stacking good plays on top of good plays and try not to have those (scoring) lulls.”

Ticket information: Pre sale tickets ($6 adult/$4 student) can be purchased at the Graham Administration Office located at 400 Third Street, M-F until 3:00pm. Senior Citizen (Gold Card) will be honored for cardholder only. All tickets at the gate will be $8.00.
NOTE: Season ticket holders will be allowed to sit in their reserved seat, but will need to purchase a ticket for admission into the game.

Graham is a really good team but they are not great! To many holes that Decatur exploited will end up hurting them. They will play a team with more weapons than Decatur. I'm not who or when but they will be beaten and it shouldn't come as any big shock

Looks like Decatur exploited a lot of things against Stephenville on Friday night. Maybe a lot more than they did against Graham. I said that Decatur was a good team and not take anything for granted. Everybody has holes that still need plugging but heck you have another week to work on them.

Say what you will but I was impressed with Decatur's offensive explosiveness. This game shouldn't have gone to OT. Stepenville controlled the game and lead most of the first half. Gave Decatur the ball on the 1 foot line and fumbled on their 1 foot line. 14 pts right there. If you wanna call those holes, I understand. Decatur was dang good on offense. Graham has built and continues to add on to its proud football tradition with a third straight trip to the state semifinals. The Steers (12-2) will see Argyle for a third time in two years and second straight semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Aledo.

"They have this thing called Jacket mystique that's a mental battle for everyone. It's a rival we hadn't even played," Sides said. "Our coaches told us that we were bigger, badder and better than them, and we believed it."

It was a back-and-forth game with Stephenville twice holding the lead (7-0 and 21-20), but it was a second half where Graham made the key plays in all three phases after scoring 20 points in the second quarter to earn a halftime advantage.

The battle of quarterbacks seemed to favor Stidham over Graham's excellent junior Landry Turner, at least on paper. But on the field Stidham had to face the Steers' defense, and that swung that match to Turner, who passed for six more yards (148-142) and outrushed his counterpart by 25 (61-36).

And the Steers' Landon Gonzales picked off Stidham twice — doubled the season total of the star coming in. It was nothing new to Gonzales, who has eight picks on the season.

Sides gave Graham its first lead — 14-7 — with a 21-yard touchdown pass as Turner erased a bad snap the play before from his memory bank immediately and led his man perfectly.

Turner came back with another touchdown at the end of the half to give Graham a 20-14 lead.

That lead slipped away ever so briefly — 11 seconds to be exact — before Gonzales returned a short kickoff a long way — 77 yards for a touchdown. Turner then escaped a would-be tackler in the backfield for a two-point conversion and 28-24 lead that would be enough for the Steers' defense.

Patience and poise is how Sides, who caught five passes for 80 yards, described his team's play, starting with the quarterback, who was at Springtown one year ago.

"Passion, that guy plays with so much passion," Sides said. "There's not another quarterback that I want on my team other than him. That kid wants to play so much. He's bought in with the program and bought in that we can win state. One more win!"

The defensive tone was set on the first possession, a three-and-out for the Steers punctuated by Bohner Cottongame's solo tackle on Stidham, who had 937 rushing yards coming in but was held in check except for his 33-yard TD run in the second quarter.

"All week we talked about how we don't have fear of anyone and we do us and we prepare," said Cottongame, a junior who leads Graham in tackles. "In games like this when you get this deep it's about the team that makes the biggest play and one solo tackle could be the game.

"I'm already looking forward to next Friday (for rematch with Arygle)."

Stidham, who finished with 35 passing TDs and 16 more on the ground, didn't get to close the game on the field. He left with a possible concussion before Stephenville's final chance in the last three minutes.

Stidham was 11 of 20 for 142 yards and two interceptions. Kaegun Williams rushed for 79 yards and caught five passes for 40 yards for the Yellow Jackets (9-4).

Graham's Nick Martin rushed for 131 yards on 30 carries and scored two 1-yard touchdowns, including one with 10 minutes to go that put the Steers up 35-24.

Turner (12-22, 148 yards) went to the magic bag of Brett Favre for that insurance TD, as he scrambled to avoid a sack and threw the ball up for grabs. Weston Wenninger decided he was the best man of the four who had a shot at it and snagged it for a 36-yard completion. Turner hit a 14-yarder that was all skill to Connor Smith to set up the touchdown.

Graham stayed with its ground game (148 yards at half; 186 for the game) and took advantage of an extra second-quarter possession to lead 20-14 at halftime.

There were 34 points in the second after a scoreless first period. Stephenville broke the ice on a fourth-and-nine conversion for a 26-yard touchdown pass from Stidham to Zoey Kendall.

Graham wasted its next chance after a 45-yard kickoff return by Travis Wilson, but then Gonzales swung momentum with an interception of Stidham, matching the QB's total through 239 attempts coming in.

Stephenville had scored its first TD off a Turner pick. Graham converted its first takeaway, too, with a 59-yard touchdown drive, all on the ground. Martin scored from the 1.

Graham's Jaxon Brockway recovered the ensuing kickoff and Turner converted it into seven points with a 21-yard TD pass to Sides.

The 14-7 lead lasted all of 43 seconds as Stidham scored on a 33-yard touchdown run on an option keep, probably the only time all night it caught Graham without the proper alignment.

Graham had the ball last in the wild second quarter and scored another six with Turner going 3-of-3 for 30 yards, including 2-yard pass over the middle to Todd Parker for a touchdown.

Stephenville coach Joseph Gillespie wished the Steers well going forward but felt not converting in the red zone and with great field position was a difference.

"Sometimes when you get it down on a short field with a great defense, it condenses the field and makes it a bit easier to cover and defend," Gillespie said. "We've been very fortunate to come out on top of 99 percent of those things throughout the course of the season. For some reason or another, it just didn't happen tonight."

There was no "Jacket mystique,"

Just a lot of determined Steers.

MINERAL WELLS (December 5, 2014) — Stephenville’s playoff journey was halted by a stalwart Graham defense at Ram Stadium Friday night.

Graham cornerback Landon Gonzales was a thorn in Stephenville’s side all night, intercepting two passes from Texas Tech pledge Jarrett Stidham, who previously had thrown just one interception all season. Gonzales, who came inches from a third interception, also returned a kickoff for a touchdown right after Stephenville had grabbed the lead early in the third quarter.

Graham won 35-24 and faces Argyle in the semifinals next week. Argyle held off a late charge by Texarkana Liberty-Eylau to win 45-42 in the Region II-4A Division I final, its 30th consecutive win.

Graham (12-2) limited the vaunted Yellow Jacket offense to 313 total yards. Stephenville (9-4) was also strong defensively, holding Graham to 357 total yards.

Stephenville led 21-20 after Stidham’s second touchdown run, a one-yard plunge on third-and-goal to cap the Yellow Jackets’ first drive of the second half. It came after a sack by linebacker Josh Gillespie halted Graham after driving to the 27 on the half’s opening possession.

The go-ahead drive covered 66 yards in 11 plays, highlighted by consecutive 16-yard passes to Darian Brown and Kaegun Williams for 16 yards each. Brown had four catches for 71 yards, all in the second half. Williams rushed for 83 yards and added 34 receiving.

Graham’s answer didn’t take near as much time.

Fielding a high, short kickoff, Gonzales made his biggest play of the game, maneuvering through a bit of traffic at the left hash around midfield then escaping down the left sideline for a 77-yard TD return. Quarterback Landry Turner escaped a potential sack and darted into the end zone for the two-point conversion, and Graham held a 28-21 lead it would never relinquish.

Turner was 12-21 through the air for 147 yards and two scores, hitting Derek Sides five times for 79 yards and a TD. Nick Martin had a workman like 140 yards on 29 carries and scored twice.

Stephenville drove right back down the field after the big return. Two passes from Stidham to Brown for 41 yards led the way to the six yard line, but a holding call on second down halted the march. Stidham and Williams hooked up for five yards on second down, but the Under Armour All-American was forced out of the pocket and had to throw the ball away on third and goal from the 11.

Fick finished Stephenville’s scoring with a 28-yard field goal late in the third, but trailing 28-24 was as close as Stephenville would get. Fick went 4-4 kicking field goals in the post season.

Graham answered with a nine-play, 61-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard TD by Martin. Stephenville appeared to have the drive stopped, but Weston Wenninger made a circus catch for a 34-yard gain to the Stephenville 15 on third and long. Turner was forced to scramble to his right, and just when it looked like he would be sacked, threw the ball up for grabs into a crowd. It was tipped around, and Wenninger came out of the pack with it.

Stidham was sacked for the third time to end Stephenville’s next possession, but the Jacket defense held up after allowing one first down. That’s when Jon Clark Giddings gave Stephenville reason to believe.

Fielding a punt at his own 30 yard line, Giddings weaved in and out of traffic and was finally drug down by the last man to beat at the Graham 11, a 59-yard return.

But Stephenville couldn’t cash in. A sack cost the Jackets 13 yards, and on fourth and 23 from the Graham 24, Stidham fired a pass into the end zone that was picked off by Gonzales.

Anthony Chavarria took over at quarterback and hit Ben martin for 24 yards on fourth and nine, then hit Austin Stufflebean twice for 29 yards tot he Graham 19 as Stephenville tried to pull within one possession late in the game.

But facing fourth-and-three from the 12, a Chavarria pass fell short and incomplete and Graham ran out the clock.

The steers converted three key fourth downs that led to two scores in the first half.

Stephenville led 7-0 after a 27-yard touchdown from Stidham to Stufflebean on the opening play of the second quarter. After a fourth straight defensive stop to begin the game, the Jackets gained 16 yards on a pair of runs by Williams, then went deep. Stidham dropped back to his 35 and launched a bomb into one-on-one coverage that came down at the Graham two – in the hands of Gonzales. He crossed the field in the end zone, then weaved his way back across to the Stephenville sideline. Stidham finally knocked him out of bounds at the Graham 41, or he may have taken it to the house.

Graham ran the ball nine times and scored to even things up on a 1-yard burst by Martin. He carried the ball six times for 43 yards on the drive, and the game was tied.

Graham pooched the ensuing kickoff, and when Stephenville didn’t field it, the ball took a sharp backward bounce, allowing the Steers to recover at the Yellow Jacket 30.

The Jacket defense looked to thwart the opportunity, but Turner scrambled for 20 yards on fourth and eight. After a bad snap moments later, he turned third-and-goal from the 21 into a touchdown with a strike to Sides.

Stephenville was quick to even things up with the longest rushing play by either team – a 33-yard TD by Stidham on an option keeper.

Graham re-took the lead on two-yard pass from Turner to Todd Parker with 13 seconds left in the half. The extra point was low and blocked.

Zoey Kendall intercepted a pass to halt a promising Graham drive in the first quarter, which surprised many by ending in a scoreless tie. Kendall’s pick was just the second by Stephenville this season, the other by Giddings.

It was the first meeting in 17 years between programs that squared off annually from 1970-89. Graham took a 17-16-1 lead in the back-and-forth series that dates back to 1924. It was the first time in 62 years they played in the playoffs.

Stidham finished his remarkable senior season with a hand in 50 touchdowns and more than 3,900 yards of offense.

Williams, just a sophomore, became Stephenville’s all-time touchdowns leader with his 50th against Big Spring last week. He finished with 1,555 rushing yards and 1,224 receiving yards, a total of 2,779 offensive yards.

It was the sixth quarterfinal in seven years for Stephenville under head coach Joe Gillespie. He is 22-6 in the playoffs and 72-23 overall.
