As far as High School sports goes, Waco, Austin area is considered Central Texas. The Waco area is actually called the SuperCentex region.

Central texas because of population not geography. Actual center of Texas is about 15 miles northeast of Brady in northern McCulloch County. Which is way far from the population centers.

I really don't see Early moving up. I think they turned in 406. That would really create a rediculas spread from top to bottom unless they move the top of 3A down, but in order to avoid having 4 and 5 team districts (especially in reg 1) they are going to have to add some teams. My Gut feeling is that they will raise the top to around 1000 and have the bottom around 440.

I am still going for PI/RH.

The two teams have been playing each other since PI got a football team in 1950. PI has 8 wins more than RH in the matchup.

If you ask (some) PI fans, it is not a rivalry (because it will somehow make them look bad . . . I guess).

But you be the judge (http://forums.rgvsports.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=008667)

Farmersville vs Princeton

Dates back to both high school's inceptions! Farmersville leads the series by gosh only knows how much as Princeton is usually a perennial doormat, but both teams play each other ferociously every year regardless of their records and have to post security in each other's towns separated only by Lake Lavon to prevent any pranks or mischief! The year I graduated they snuck over to our pep rally throwing a wreath in it and scorched PHS with gasoline on the 50 yard line of our football field! Needless to say we brought the wreath with us onto the fifity yard line at the game in Princeton that year and gave it back to them in the form of a major butt whipping! I suppose that is how it goes with cross lake rivalries!

Sweetwater and Abilene High used to be a good rivalry back in the day...along w/ Sweetwater and Denison (in the 90's)

BUT!!! NONE will EVER compare to the Sweetwater vs. Snyder rivalry!!!!!!

Snyder Tigers...Black hearts and yellow bellies:D
I agree this is a great rivalry. But lets not compare to the Mid Lee vs Permian thats big time on its own. National big time televised live a 3 times I believe, game usually was for the district championship. Snyder v Sweetwater I compare it more of a great one because of the cross town type hype like Abilene v Cooper or Permian v Odessa high. Monahans v Pecos or Stockton. Kids know each other grow up competing against each other towns and schools for bragging rights. MOJO v LEE was all this plus more championships on the line all the time. With 20,000 fans watching and the whole Nations interest specially in the 80's and90's.

Wharton and Needville are bigger than Wharton and Columbia

Tigers just played the Gobblers those two times in the playoffs

Needville and Sweeny are pretty big too-have been in the same district forever- except those two years Jays were in 4A

La Grange and Sealy used to be big rivals

La Grange and Giddings, even La Grange and Bellville

When Boling was 3A they were big rivals with Needville for ever until mid 80s

Even though Tidehaven is 2A they are big rivals with Sweeny

Edna and yoakum

Edna and Hallettsville when they were both 3A

at one time when Ganado was 3A -way big when and was big rivals with Edna

Also Royal and Hempstead- when they were both 3A

Although both schools are new to 3A this year there is no bigger rivalary anywhere than Paris and Paris North Lamar. Both are inside the city limits of Paris. It's pretty intense among fans, players, and even administration.

I have no axe to grind in this one but Celina v Pilot Point. Pilot Point is down in 2A for 1 cycle and wouldn't schedule Celina this time but they are 15 miles apart, G.A. coached at Celina twice and PP 3 times. The rivalry is the stuff of legends. Someone from either place probably knows how many times they have played and what the respective record is.

Paris and North Lamar both will be ready for the second district game of the year, the whole town shows up for what is known as the Crosstown Showdown! Seating is hard to find and the area between the bleachers and fencing and open space arount the consession stand is filled up. North Lamar had a long history of getting the beating but recently they have had the upper hand. Paris has brought a coach in that is not afraid to decipline the players at Paris High and he is getting the program turned around. I look for this years game to be a knock down drag out for the district title.

Cameron Yoe vs. Rockdale Tigers in the Battle of the Bell. You could go 1-9 in a season and be somewhat happy as long as that win was the Battle of the Bell. Cameron leads the series by a large margin but Rockdale won last year. They made it a huge deal to. Lots of trash talk. They have made Cameron hungry to get that bell back. This years game should be one great game.

The Prosper-Celina rivalry is going to be good for another year — until Prosper goes to 4A and eventually 5A (Prosper has close to 4A numbers right now, as a matter of fact). The way I see both towns going, Prosper will probably go 5A well before Celina goes 4A.

But for this year at least, it's going to be on like Donkey Kong. It might be as big as the Gainesville game in 2002. That was unbelievable.

Prosper-Celina. I know its really just came up in the last 2-3 years, but I have heard stories of jr high and high school kids getting beaten up for wearing the other schools colors. Most kids in celina will not even think about green. This will be the one of the most intense games in the state next season. I am going to make sure to get there around 5 just so I can get a seat.

I don't know recently but Goldthwaite and San Saba used to be one of the best in central texas. One of the years Goldthwaite won state they lost one game and it was to 1-9 San Saba. 7-0. Also if Early ever moved back up to 3a then an Early - Brownwood matchup would quickly become a rivalry.

Yeah That probably wouldn't be good for Early although they are much better than the days when they were 3a and we ( a 1a school) scrimmaged them every year and useually won. but that was in the 80's.

Way back in the last century... OK, thought there might be someone else other than TarponFanInNorthTexas and me that originate from the Valley. There was a huge rivalry between 3A Weslaco and 2A Donna. The game was always an afternoon game and was a school holiday. One year we, Donna, burned a D in Weslaco field that went from sideline to sideline. Weslaco had overseeded a huge W in our field with rye grass the year before. That rivalry lasted a couple of generations at least. Donna's district rivals were the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets. That rivalry reminds me of Cuero/Gonzales. Same intensity. Any of this jog anyone's memory out there?

Anytime Gonzales,Cuero, Yoakum, Luling and Hallettsville got together in district it was generally a noholds barred, anyone can win on any given week (When Cuero wasn't totally dominating).
Also Manor and Burnet really had a burning rivalry in the 80's.

Yes, I'm a homer.

Well since we're including East Texas.........Spring Hill(Longview) vs White Oak had one of the hottest rivalries I've seen. It went on for years. Schools are only 4 miles apart and some of the stuff that went on during game week was crazy. The rivalry still rages but they are in different districts now with on e being 3a and one 2a but they still play for bragging rights. Not as heated as in the past but still fun. But like most rivals......if they are not threatened by each other or playing for the same prize they will sometime stand with you. In 2009 when SH was going up against Carthage in the semi finals for baseball Wo was playing the same after noon for their trip to the state tournament. They started 2 hours ahead of our game. When they finished their game all their fans came to cheer us on. But let it be for the same prize and IT' S ON!!!!!!!!!

And Gladewater and Gilmer IS a BIG ONE TOO. I don't think they pull the antics that SH and WO do though, simply because they are not as geographically close. 2 miles from our field house and we are in WO city limits. These Kids can pull some kind of stunts.
Years ago they could get by with much more..but now days it's gets shut down.

I know it's a tight series, 25-24-1 in favor of Hondo. A Hondo poster would be better to answer this question.

You guys keep thinking that. Why don't you enjoy you rvictories the last two years (Prosper deserved them) without the annoying comments that make you look silly. I can assure you Celina will play Prosper again contrary to your remarks. With regard to the "rivalry", I don't think Celina vs. Prosper would be in the Top 100 based upon history. Now, Pilot Point vs. Celina that is a true rivalry.

What rivalry???? Not much has happened in this series to be taken as a legitimate rivalry other than the proximity of the towns.

bellville vs sealy. 10 minutes apart. 2 years ago sealy spray painted bellvilles school an other things, last year bellville put cat litter all over the school an red dye in their fountain. shirts are made every year for it.

Tru dat.... Yoakum and Cuero will meet for the 100th time this year on October 15 in Cuero and from what I hear, it's the second longest rivalry in the State of Texas. The two towns are only 17 miles apart. It doesn't matter what the records are, it's usually a hard-fought battle. True, Cuero has had the upper hand as of late, but last year's nail-bitter in which the Gobblers had to rally late to pull off their 7th win in a row in the series, should make for an interesting game this year. SO, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THE YOAKUM-CUERO RIVALRY IS ONE, IF NOT THE, BEST RIVALRY GAMES.

Then why did the Dallas morning news call it one of the biggest rivalries in the Dallas area.

Big deal it takes both teams to consider it a rival game. Sounds like Prosper wants it to be a rival , but Celina could care less.prosper wins a couple of games against Celina and now it's a huge rival game please.

This of course comes down to frame of reference. I know it's not 3a, but the most heated rivalry Ive ever witnessed is Ennis/Waxahachie. These are two towns that legitimately hate each other. The series is very balanced and many of the games have ended in bench-clearing brawls, in all sports.

Are you sure this list is accurate Leon??? I only ask because I do not see Brownwood anywhere on it. Hard to believe that the so called" Kings of the Pigskin" wouldn't be anywhere on here. It has been so long since a post on here didn't consume itself with The Wood that I have gone into shock

Good point... Leon assumes they are not on here because of being 4A so long.

I'm suprised Stephenville and Brownwood are not on here. Texas Monthly even published that this was the game to see in Texas. Hmmm....Interesting

LOL. "The Wood" vs "The Ville" is by far the best rival Leon knows of. Best reason to attend Tarleton State is to watch this game at TSU Memorial Field.

Leon......what's up, buddy? Just wanted you to know that Greta and I have moved up town from Boyd to Greenwood, America. We are so very happy there....all the amenities and such. I just wanted to give a Bridgeport Bull shout out. How bout them Bulls! Those Eaglets better get mended or else the Bulls are going to own them again.

Gilbert....wazzzz up! You going to the Big Sandy game? Does Decatur still have that Goodbolt kid?

gilbert
10-06-2010, 12:21 PM
Leon......Goodbolt is gone but the Eagles will need to find some offensive firepower to keep up with the Bull offensive juggernaut (good word....heard it yesterday). The Bull receivers might be too strong for the Eaglets to handle. Led by Schuett, Mullins, Hudson and Minx these young men will wreak havoc on the Decatur secondary. C. Henson is one of the best QB's in the state....if not the best......and the ground game of Huerta and his catching ability out of the backfield may be too much for the D-town boys.

I really like the Bull Defense (HOW 'BOUT DEM BULLS......I just had to say that) Led by Boyd, Bracken, Mishnick, Hicks, and Plummer.....not sure D'ville (I think there is a coach that spells all teams that way in DHS) can handle the onslaught of this vaunted defense. That Bracken kid might be as good as his brother.....his brother is pretty salty. How is he doing up at Midwestern?

Bring your crying towels to the stadium, D'ville Eaglets.....you are going to need them on Friday night! Go Bulls!!

Bellville vs Sealy

Eric Dickerson said one time that of all the football games he's played in his life that he didn't hate anyone more than the Bellville Brahmas.
