Graham’s Hagen Hughes (22) has started the past two years in the secondary and has made four interceptions this season.
Graham’s defense has picked off 25 passes this season, with the secondary doing the bulk of the damage.

The leader back there is senior Landon Gonzales, who will be playing in his 44th varsity game when Graham takes on Stephenville for the Region I-4A Division I title Friday night.

But Gonzales, who has six interceptions on the season, knows that while he’s faced a few quality signal-callers during the past three years, he admits to never having seen anyone like Yellow Jackets quarterback Jarrett Stidham, currently ranked the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com.

Despite missing three games with a broken bone in his throwing hand, Stidham has thrown for 2,791 yards and 34 touchdowns. Even more impressive is the Texas Tech pledge has been picked off only once in 239 attempts.

There’s no doubt the Steers’ secondary will be tested early and often against the explosive Yellow Jackets’ offense. How they perform could have a lot to do whether Graham makes a third consecutive state semifinal appearance or not.

“This is exciting. I’ve been looking forward to playing a Division I quarterback like Stidham because I like playing good competition,” Gonzales said. “He can really sling it. Ever since their sophomore year when they won state, I’ve always wanted to play Stephenville.”

Gonzales is the veteran of the unit with 14 career interceptions, but Hagen Hughes is also no slouch when it comes to experience. He was mainly a backup running back in 2012, but the Steers’ other cornerback has started 29 games since then and has four picks this year.

Both safeties are first-year starters as that position became a question mark in August when TCU commit Mike Freeze broke his collarbone and underwent season-ending surgery.

But Weston Womack and Hunter Baca have adjusted quickly. Womack picked off two Abilene Wylie passes Friday, giving the junior five this season. Baca, who started last season at receiver, leads the secondary with 56 tackles, two more than Womack.

“They’re smart and that helps because they’re always in the right place to make plays,” Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. “They’re going to complete some passes against us, and we need to put ourselves in position to make the play.”

That’s exactly what happened in Friday’s 20-7 victory over the Bulldogs, who entered on a nine-game winning streak.

Womack picked off Wylie’s first pass attempt of the night and also came up with another interception when J.T. Cary was pressured into throwing an ill-advised pass with Wylie threatening.

“That first interception it was a tipped ball. It just came right to me and I made a play,” Womack said. “It’s all a group thing. One man forces a bad play and we were tackling a quarterback as he threw it up.”

The Steers’ third interception in that win was by Skeeter Buchanan, who should be used more as a defensive back against pass-happy Stephenville in Graham’s 3-3-5 scheme.

Gonzales said one of Graham’s goals each week is to limit a team’s scoring to half their average. The Yellow Jackets enter Friday’s game at Mineral Wells averaging 47 points per game.

“They’re going to complete some passes and offensively they’re going to score some,” Gonzales said. “We don’t want to give up the big play and make sure we tackle well.

“Hunter Baca has really stepped up since Mikey went out, and we’re more and more confident. Our defensive line feeds off our secondary, and our secondary feeds off our defensive line.”

GRAHAM NOTES

QUARTERFINALS AGAIN: Counting its run to the 2009 state title game, Graham has played in the regional finals four times in the past six years. The Steers enter the game 3-0 in this round having beaten Wimberley 48-7 in 2009; Gatesville 40-35 in 2012 and Shallowater 45-14 last year. This will be the first time of those four trips for Graham to compete in the larger division of its class.

DEFENSIVE LEADERS: With three sacks each on Friday, Texas State commit Dustin McWhorter and Colton Langley stayed tied for the team lead with seven. Half of Graham’s 22 sacks this season occurred in the two wins over the Bulldogs.

McWhorter and Bohner Cottongame finished with a team-high 10 tackles. Cottongame leads the Steers with 111 tackles followed by McWhorter (93), Taylor Reddell (87) and Jim Bob Perry (83).

TICKET INFO: Graham is the visitor for Friday’s game and pre-sale tickets are available ($8 adult; $6 children) until 3 p.m. Friday at the GISD Administration Building. All tickets at the gate are $10, and the gate will open at 6 p.m. Ram Stadium has a capacity of 7,000, so arriving early would be advised.

How far apart are we exactly? Lol. Looking at the numbers....I will have to say that Graham is in trouble in this one. With Stidham as the starter this season, the lowest scoring game I can remember is against Lubbock Cooper which our offense still scored 39 points on. You guys don't score a lot points....and while you may score above your season average this game; honestly I don't think it will be enough. We simply have too many weapons on the field to cover all our WR's our RB and our dual threat QB. Look all the teams that get to this point are good, I believe Graham to be a good team. Just not good enough for this game. It will be a track meet and it i will be fun to watch but I believe this one to go to Stephenville's favor. Hold us under 40 points...Graham will have a shot. But if we score more than that....I don't think Graham can keep up. (56-42 Stephenville IMO.

I'm equally intrigued. Graham plays a smash mouth, physical style. More physical than Wylie, despite Wylie's size. I have not seen Stephenville but know they have an explosive offense with maybe the best dual purpose QB in the state. Should be an interesting matchup. Bigger question, can Graham's secondary cover Stephenville's receivers? Stidham should be able to buy himself some time so that could be a matchup to watch. Either way, hope my Eagles are there to take on the winner.

Just was sayin...we may have a turnover, just not by an INT thrown by Stidham. Also, Wylie did have a good "D" and you guys have a good "D" againt a team like Wylie that is....just not against S'ville offense or Decatur's offense for that matter. It comes down to who scores the most. Or the way you would like to look at it "which D stops the offense more". Either way, this game I still pick Stephenville. We punt the ball more than 3 times in this game and I would be surprised. Can't wait to see "The beast in front of Stidham take him down." Hasn't happened all year unless you are considering scoring 39 points taking him down. (December 1, 2014) — Strangers will meet on the gridiron Friday, but that wasn’t always the case for state powers Stephenville and Graham.

The 4A Division I Region I championship and state quarterfinal kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ram Stadium in Mineral Wells. The winner faces Argyle or Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in next week’s semifinals.

Though they haven’t met since a district contest in 1997, Stephenville and Graham once had a longstanding back-and-forth rivalry. The schools have met in football 32 times dating back to 1924 and even played 20 consecutive years from 1970 to 1989.

Seventh-year Stephenville head coach Joe Gillespie played in the 1988 and 1989 games when current Baylor head coach and Maxwell Award finalist Art Briles was in his first two years at SHS. Graham defeated the Jackets and Gillespie 9-7 in 1988, but Stephenville got its revenge with a 31-0 rout in 1989.

“Even back then, the communities and the kids were so similar that we were naturally pretty evenly matched,” said Gillespie, a linebacker at Stephenville, then Angelo State. “I remember the game in 1988 because it was one of Coach Briles’ first games, and it was a defensive struggle. We got the best of them the next year, though.”

The schools are still quite familiar with one another based on proximity – it’s 82.4 miles from SHS to GHS, according to Google Driving Maps – and competitions in other sports. The schools share a volleyball district, have met in girls basketball and had recent playoff confrontations in boys basketball and baseball. The 7-on-7 teams have had run-ins, and Graham quarterback Landry Turner lost in the area round to Stephenville when he played for Springtown last year.

But none of that has helped to bring the full football teams back together. Such a measure took an act by the UIL, dividing 4A into two pre-determined divisions.

“We’ve always talked to Graham and to Coach (Kenny) Davidson about playing, but there were always so many circumstances in the way. We were so close to the 3A-4A line for so long, we didn’t know if we would be in the same district, so that kept us from ever really making concrete plans for an early season game until it was too late,” Gillespie explained. “We talked about playing opening week this year, but we both knew in advance we were going to be 4A Division I and we both knew it was only a matter of time before we crossed paths in the playoffs so we kind of shied away from it.”

Many anticipated a Division I playoff meeting between the successful programs last season. But because Wichita Falls Hirschi and Burkburnett both made the playoffs and had a larger enrollment than Graham, the Steers entered the Division II bracket and the old foes avoided each other for the 16th consecutive season. They each reached the semifinals in their respective brackets.

It’s not as if anyone planned for the once robust rivalry to fade away. Graham slipped to 3A long before Stephenville, which dropped from the old 4A in the 2012-13 realignment. The Jackets won their fifth state title without seeing Graham in 2012.

So evenly matched were the programs in the 1970s and 80s that Graham won 10 times, Stephenville nine and there was one tie during a stretch of 20 straight meetings. The overall series is dead even – Graham 16 wins, Stephenville 16 and the lone tie.

“Of course our biggest rivalry game every year was Brownwood, but Graham was the team we played every year that we were the most competitive with,” Gillespie said. “It was always so back and forth with them, and I imagine it would be similar to that if we played every year now.”

Stephenville won the last three meetings by wide margins – 31-0 in 1989, 41-18 in 1996 and 37-13 in 1997. But Graham owns the longest winning streak in the series – six straight from 1953-1970 – and the widest margin of victory – 54-0 in 1955.

The teams have met just once in the playoffs, and it was a rematch of a regular season game. Stephenville swept Graham in 1952, winning 20-13 in the regular season and 25-13 in the playoffs. That Yellow Jacket team lost only to Terrell, 28-6. Terrell won the 2A state championship, defeating Yoakum 61-13 in the final.

There was one forfeit in the series by Graham in 1951.

Graham has never captured a state title. The Steers did reach the 3A Division II final in 2009, dropping a 13-12 nail biter to Carthage. The Steers lost in bi-district to Snyder in 2010 and 2011 before reaching the Division II semifinals in 2012 and 2013.

Stephenville is in the quarterfinals for the sixth time in seven seasons under Gillespie, who is 22-5 in the playoffs.

Gillespie believes the programs are just as evenly matched entering Friday’s all-important showdown.

“We have similar communities, similar schools, great kids and great coaching staffs,” he said. “It’s going to be a great night of Texas high school football Friday.”

Graham’s defense has picked off 25 passes this season, with the secondary doing the bulk of the damage.

The leader back there is senior Landon Gonzales, who will be playing in his 44th varsity game when Graham takes on Stephenville for the Region I-4A Division I title Friday night.

But Gonzales, who has six interceptions on the season, knows that while he’s faced a few quality signal-callers during the past three years, he admits to never having seen anyone like Yellow Jackets quarterback Jarrett Stidham, currently ranked the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com.

Despite missing three games with a broken bone in his throwing hand, Stidham has thrown for 2,791 yards and 34 touchdowns. Even more impressive is the Texas Tech pledge has been picked off only once in 239 attempts.

There’s no doubt the Steers’ secondary will be tested early and often against the explosive Yellow Jackets’ offense. How they perform could have a lot to do whether Graham makes a third consecutive state semifinal appearance or not.

“This is exciting. I’ve been looking forward to playing a Division I quarterback like Stidham because I like playing good competition,” Gonzales said. “He can really sling it. Ever since their sophomore year when they won state, I’ve always wanted to play Stephenville.”

Gonzales is the veteran of the unit with 14 career interceptions, but Hagen Hughes is also no slouch when it comes to experience. He was mainly a backup running back in 2012, but the Steers’ other cornerback has started 29 games since then and has four picks this year.

Both safeties are first-year starters as that position became a question mark in August when TCU commit Mike Freeze broke his collarbone and underwent season-ending surgery.

But Weston Womack and Hunter Baca have adjusted quickly. Womack picked off two Abilene Wylie passes Friday, giving the junior five this season. Baca, who started last season at receiver, leads the secondary with 56 tackles, two more than Womack.

“They’re smart and that helps because they’re always in the right place to make plays,” Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. “They’re going to complete some passes against us, and we need to put ourselves in position to make the play.”

That’s exactly what happened in Friday’s 20-7 victory over the Bulldogs, who entered on a nine-game winning streak.

Womack picked off Wylie’s first pass attempt of the night and also came up with another interception when J.T. Cary was pressured into throwing an ill-advised pass with Wylie threatening.

“That first interception it was a tipped ball. It just came right to me and I made a play,” Womack said. “It’s all a group thing. One man forces a bad play and we were tackling a quarterback as he threw it up.”

The Steers’ third interception in that win was by Skeeter Buchanan, who should be used more as a defensive back against pass-happy Stephenville in Graham’s 3-3-5 scheme.

Gonzales said one of Graham’s goals each week is to limit a team’s scoring to half their average. The Yellow Jackets enter Friday’s game at Mineral Wells averaging 47 points per game.

“They’re going to complete some passes and offensively they’re going to score some,” Gonzales said. “We don’t want to give up the big play and make sure we tackle well.

“Hunter Baca has really stepped up since Mikey went out, and we’re more and more confident. Our defensive line feeds off our secondary, and our secondary feeds off our defensive line.”

GRAHAM NOTES

QUARTERFINALS AGAIN: Counting its run to the 2009 state title game, Graham has played in the regional finals four times in the past six years. The Steers enter the game 3-0 in this round having beaten Wimberley 48-7 in 2009; Gatesville 40-35 in 2012 and Shallowater 45-14 last year. This will be the first time of those four trips for Graham to compete in the larger division of its class.

DEFENSIVE LEADERS: With three sacks each on Friday, Texas State commit Dustin McWhorter and Colton Langley stayed tied for the team lead with seven. Half of Graham’s 22 sacks this season occurred in the two wins over the Bulldogs.

McWhorter and Bohner Cottongame finished with a team-high 10 tackles. Cottongame leads the Steers with 111 tackles followed by McWhorter (93), Taylor Reddell (87) and Jim Bob Perry (83).

TICKET INFO: Graham is the visitor for Friday’s game and pre-sale tickets are available ($8 adult; $6 children) until 3 p.m. Friday at the GISD Administration Building. All tickets at the gate are $10, and the gate will open at 6 p.m. Ram Stadium has a capacity of 7,000, so arriving early would be advised.

Every time Graham beats a good one its because they were down some players, its a broken record playing over and over...you do realize Graham has lost some starters? One of which would make your one man team have a bad bad bad night. We go into Friday night without FOUR key players I can think of that make differences in any game. I do not think any one of us has ever said that we have a 'one man team'. To say that is just flat out wrong and disrespectful to all of the other kids who work their tail ends off every single day. My opinion and 50 cents might get ya a cup of coffee but here it is. I think our guys might have been a little over confident. That coupled with some bounces going Decaturs way got momentum on their side and they did a dang good job of keeping it until about 2 minutes left in the game.

But lets take a look at the rest of this offense. Everything feeds off of all kids are able to do on the field. We have 5 recievers that can catch and run. They get open and make plays everywhere; in the flats, in the middle of the field and on deep routes. KW is electric when he touches the ball. He has made 11 men miss tackles on one play so many times I have lost count. And the OL really can get down field and make blocks to free KW and #1 up. Really great at pass protection. #1 is just the leader and adds a threat to our offense. Rush him and he gets rid of the ball quick. Drop in coverage and he can scramble for 20+ yards. He reads the field really well. But with all that said, our recievers catching the passes; KW doing what he does....that enables #1 to do what he does. It is a team gentleman and no one has been able to stop them yet; we have been outscored; yes...but this offense has not been stopped. With what I saw from our Defense last Friday....this one willl be fun.

They threw one int. Graham also out gained them 561-367 in total yds.. Take it for what it's worth numbers won't mean nothing come Friday but I can promise you this the jackets won't hang 60 on Graham.
They also had 2 or 3 fumbles. I was there. There was a turnover every other possession it seemed like. Very sloppy. That's why I haven't considered it a true measuring stick.

I don't think anyone from Graham is underestimating the ville at all they have just as good shot to win this game as Graham. By numbers yes the Villes D does not look very impressive at all, but also like I said numbers won't mean anything come Friday except the ones on score board.

Graham has fumbled the ball 23 times this season and lost 12 of those. Turner has thrown 12 INT's this season. That's averaging right at 2 turnovers a game. Could be a long night for Graham if the Steers accomplish their season average in this game.

I'd like to see a stat. The ratio of how many times Graham scores to how many possessions they have on average. Example if they have 10 possessions in a game, how many of those do they usually score on. I've looked at several different sites and can't really get that stat. Not that it matters, just fun to see.

Your D gave up 32 points last week and your excited? We turned the ball over on big spring 6 times, they had a pick 6, and a controversial call at halftime that gave them a touchdown and they still struggled to put up 27 on Graham..

Yes, but we scored 50+ points on them with ease-twice....you guys scored only 20. Big Springs "D" isn't as good as our "D" IMO. I like the chances of S'ville's "O" against Graham's "D" than Graham's "O" vs our "D". Like I said, it is a track meet of who can put the most points on the board and I believe S'ville will win that battle. So much confidence with only scoring 20 on Big Spring. They have a weak "D". If Graham doesn't put 30+ up on Friday....it will be over by the end of the 3rd Qtr. Just IMO.

It's more about offense vs offense for Stephenville. It is more about defense vs defense for Graham. The mind set that is going into this game at least. If each team has 11 possessions; Graham's "D" will need to stop S'ville's offense on at least 5 possessions to win this game. (Which has only happened once this season with #1 at the helm) Any less than that will result in another Jackets victory. In the playoffs does anyone care if the defense gives up 40 points if the offense scores 58-69 points?
