It's time for a little speech of my own. I know it'll have no bearing on the game, but, here goes:

ONE MORE GAME, BUCKEYES! You worked all year long for this....ever since November 17, 2006. Remember that disappointment you felt that night? That's a feeling you never want to experience again! Do whatever it takes to finish this season with that ultimate prize! You know, as well as I do, that this season is a season of destiny. Always remember, all that hard work, dedication, sweat and tears, is paying off right now. You've EARNED this opportunity! The only thing left now is to GO OUT AND TAKE THAT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY HOME WITH YOU! The ARMY OF BUCKEYES will be in the stands and will have your back!
Go Buckeyes! Remember the D-A-S-H ! P.R.I.D.E. Give 110% at least one more play than your opponent! High and tight! NO turnovers! Watch the penalties and play solid DEFENSE! "Offense wins games, but DEFENSE wins championship!" GIVE IT YOUR ALL ONE MORE TIME! Josh N-E-L-S-O-N would be proud and is smiling down from heaven right now. Give God all the glory for He is with you, now and always.

Sincerely,
waterboy

It's amazing to me, as I just read through the Celina/LH DII championship game thread, that it has been almost a year since I posted my pre-game "mom speech". What is not amazing to me is that the 2007 Panther football team finds themselves in the same place, only in Division I.

And of course, once again, there has been much blah blah blah from both sides about why this/that team will win/lose. None of that matters, because none of the talk has a bearing on the game one way or the other.

I am one of your biggest fans, and a couple of times have been your critic. That was never meant to show disappointment other than I knew, as each of you know, that your capabilities were not shining through. Over the last 7 games, and most of the season, you have proved exactly what you are made of.

I know that you, as a team, set a goal last December, almost as soon as you finished your final 2006 game. You have the ability, mentality, strength and brotherhood to reach that goal tomorrow. You know that, I know that, the entire Liberty Hill community knows that. Now it's time to strap 'em on boys, and prove it to your opponents on the field.

THEY MAY BE GOOD AT BASEBALL,
THEY MAY BE GOOD AT TRACK.
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO FOOTBALL,
THE STATE CHAMPS ARE BACK!

WHO YA ROOTIN' FOR???? L-H-H-S!

I remember when my mom used to do that stuff for me when I was playing. No matter what team you play for, a mother's support inspires beyond all else. Good luck to Liberty Hill and Gilmer in the game, I honestly hope no one gets hurt and that after a hard fought game that both sides respect each other even more, and then shake hands like men. I am sure that these teams will probably be facing each other again over the next few years, their programs are too strong to be held down for long. (maybe a rematch in the preseason next year??? just a suggestion because this will be a great game.)

As most of you have seen, I don't post much and when I do I try to emphasize it is my opinion instead of getting into the "poop pushing" of degrading everyone else. I would not give a tinkers damn for a fan that did not support his or her team. I do get tired of the constant guarantees I read on this board though. Well, now I will make a guarantee-- THIS GAME WILL BE THE BEST IN 3A THIS YEAR. As a High School Football fan, the matchups on paper seem to indicate that the score will be more decided by a mistake or turnover, possibly one extraordinary play by one determined athlete. However, in High School Football, anything can happen on a given night--emotions sway and ebb very quickly and momentum can do miracles in these games. I have watched LH play, on film and against the team I cheer for each week. I know they can be a machine and unless a spark plug fails-look out. I also know that a single injury that sidelines a "star" can really change the whole game. I have not watched Gilmer this year, but I know that they have a winning tradition and seem to find a way to win on a regular basis-even when they are supposedly rebuilding. I don't pretend to be an expert-because if you break that down and ex-is a has been and a spert is a drip under pressure. I am a fan and hope this game is all it can be. I still pick LH to win--partly because they beat the crap out of my team, partially because I respect the way they play and the determination I witnessed, but mostly because as a whole they have the classiest players, coaches, and fans I saw all year. Good luck to both teams and may both know that they have been outstanding all year and a single game does not make a legacy or career.

You know what I notice in this photo? A weak spot right in the middle.. and how many guys at one time can these two big athletes block at one time.. I hope they can each block 4 or 5, cause thats what it will take... if the whole team were this size, I'd be worried..

still say LH by 14.. maybe more...

btw.. did Gilmer play their state championship game in 2004 at Floyd Casey? Or have they lost in this stadium recently? Thought I rembered someone talking about that..? Just thinking about the positive vs. negative energy that has a tendancy to 'hang around' events like this in memories... I know LH will have pleasant memeries in this stadium.. karma?, energy?, does it matter? opinions?

Gilmer won in 2004 at SFA on the visitor side. I don't think Gilmer has played at Floyd Casey Stadium, at least I know they haven't in the last 10 years. Pretty confident in saying that.

I was at the game in 1981 when Gilmer lost to Cameron Yoe. It was colder than a ............ in a ............... Fill in the blanks to suit your own vocabulary. I still get cold just thinking about it.

It will be nice to see the LH starters get to play a whole play off game for once though - this season.. I wonder what the scores against Pleasanton, Navasota and Carthage would have been if...... ah nevermind.. it doesn't matter right?

One things for sure... everybody's season willl be over after Saturday(in 3ADiv 1 that is).. and I am going to miss it.... that's the only crying I'll be doing.. thanks to all the football Mom's, Dad's and families who have endured football 'life as they know it'.. its been an enjoyable season to say the least. And the effort you have made has brought real enjoyment to a lot of folks. Thanks!

Good luck to Gilmer on Saturday. My only hope is that there are no serious, career, ending injuries for either team and that the ref's do their job correctly. Then Monday.. its back to the real world.. wins are only fun for about 2 days, and losses .. eh... thank God for the real world on either account! and congratulations to Gilmer in advance if you guys win.. but don't expect to.. ;) had to take one more shot.. ;) Crank it up Baby! Thunderstruck!

These big guys (of which there are 5, not counting the little guy in the middle) make blocks 10, 20, and 30 yards downfield. These guys are extremely strong, too. If y'all stack the box, Stump Godfrey will pick the defense apart. If y'all don't stack the box, Justin Johnson will get 200+ yards. Either way, I think Liberty Hill will be in trouble.
BTW, Gilmer played in Nacogdoches in 2004 for the state championship. The last time Gilmer played at Floyd Casey Stadium was in 1981. They lost to Cameron Yoe 26-3 in the state championship game. I'm sure that after THIS game Gilmer will have fond memories at this stadium because the Buckeyes WILL BEAT LIBERTY HILL.:D Call it a gut feeling....or karma....or positive energy....but I'm a believer!:D

For anyone who cares..

I just noticed that the wind is predicted to be blowing at about 22 mph from the N-NW(ref:weather undergound.com)... Floyd Casey Stadium runs NW-SE - endzone to endzone(ref: google earth.com)... doesn't bode too well for a long pass... for at least two quarters.. thats good news for LH... worth, I'd say, another 7 points at least..

Unfortunately for the home side.. this will mean the wind will be slightly in our face.. just like this board has been all week.. ;) but it will be worth it! temps only supposed to be 50 -45 though and partly cloudy. Puts a double meaning on 'Back to Back' doesn't it?

Stay warm! Go Panthers!

Hey, everybody! This is gonna be my final post until Monday. I just wanted to say to all who attend this game:

Drive safe. Be good. I pray everybody makes it to the game safe and gets home safe. Whatever the outcome, I hope everybody conducts themselves with humility, class, and sportsmanship. May God bless you all! It's been alot of fun smacking it up with y'all, and I'll be back Monday to gloat (as some will say) or eat crow, whichever the case may be.:D :D :D

P.S.
One last thing......Go Buckeyes! GIT 'R DONE!:D

Gilmer's actually already played in weather worse than what is forecast. The wind was just as strong, temperature was lower 40s and it was raining pretty heavily through most of the game against Mabank in Nacogdoches on Nov. 24.

J. Johnson rushed for more than 250 yards that day. I'm not an in-your-face Gilmer homer and I truly respect what Liberty Hill has accomplished, but I also have this gut feeling which is going around among our posters that this game may go the Buckeyes' way. This team has good karma, to quote the coach.

To all my fellow Panthers out there...I know you are as passionate as I am about our team and optimistic about our chances tomorrow. But I am afraid that a lot of us have no idea what we're going to face tomorrow. Yes, Carthage is an East Texas Team that runs the spread, but I'm telling you right now, Gilmer is not Carthage. All year long, Gilmer has played their big studs on offense, and just "Spotted" them on the other side of the ball. But if they bring in David Snow (DL) and Justin Johnson (LB) and Lamar Harris (S) on Defense...then I don't think we're going to see what we're used to seeing from our boys, running up and down the field like it's wind sprint time in practice.

I have friends in the college coaching ranks who are telling me that Gilmer has been saving their big dogs on D all year long, so as not to show anything on film. My fear is that if we can't get anything on 1st downs and Gilmer's unbelievably athletic offense gets a lead, that we're going to be in big trouble. Look, there's a reason David Snow is an Army All-American and going to Texas. There's a reason Justin Johnson is an Army All-American and going to oklahoma. There's a reason Daniel Jenks is going to Mizzou, Lamar Harris to A&M and Houston Tuminello to La Tech. Then there's about 5 other kids who'll land at SFA, Sam Houston and other smaller schools...don't shoot the messenger and don't take my word for it. This is coming from a college scout who says Gilmer has played like crap during the playoffs, turning the ball over, making mistakes and still finding ways to win...and that's not characteristic of them at all. I'm glad conditions will be poor tomorrow, cause unfortunately, I think we're lining up against a college team in disguise. I know we're discipline and nobody plays harder than our boys...but some of the over-confidence I'm seeing here scares me....and so do the Buckeyes. I've never posted on here before, and likely won't again...but I love my Panthers, and I just want them to know they'd better be ready...NOT believing what the newspapers are telling them. We could look up tomorrow and see an entirely different defense than we've seen on film...and an offense that can match us score for score, with athletes who will be playing in the NFL in 4 years time.

GET READY PANTHERS....WE ARE IN FOR A WAR!!!

GET READY PANTHERS....WE ARE IN FOR A WAR!!! Well they have a ton of talent, but they have before too. If a team plays sloppy throughout the playoffs, there is a good chance that continues. MOST of the time, you just don't automatically turn on a switch and stop the sloppy play, no matter how talented you are. LH plays disciplined, mistake free football, for the most part, and I expect that to continue. I still take LH in a close one

Oh, I totally agree! Until I actually see them on the field, I don't know that they're better than Cuero, but I do presume they are at least as good. I never underestimate anyone. Heck, I had people laugh at me the week I said that "I didn't care how down Wimberley was, they would BRING it". I had people posting throw up smilies the week we played Rockdale when I said that I hoped Homecoming activities weren't distracting.

I certainly expect this to be a hard-fought game from start to finish.

Is it Saturday yet?

This is not the first time this has happened, as a matter of fact 6 kids came from the same California team. There are also multiple teams this year posting two kids as well.

On this game, after watching Gilmer play many times I think the keys for them to win are no tunovers and forcing LH to punt or causing a turnover. The slot-T or wing-T can be stopped. Paul Pewitt in this area has ran it pretty well for a couple of years and it all goes back to just plain ole stopping the run. The only key for Gilmer to win, which to me is really one-sided. As difficult as that task maybe, LH still has to contend with a very good run & passing game. I know that LH can make plays with the passing game but its not like Gilmer hasnt been up against some really good passing teams this year and I would even go as far to say that Carthage doesnt even compare, and I have seen them play, so for me thats a null point since the pass is setup by their run game, and Im sure situation dictates when they will throw, unlike Gilmer. I will say that this year when playing Dangerfield they "got" Gilmer a few times on the misdirection, but one thing Gilmer does really well is make adjustments. So in conclusion Gilmer has to stop the run, LH has to defend the run and pass and either team can not afford a turnover. Pretty simple conclusion, just hard to execute, for both teams. Good luck to both..I wish I had some insightfull inspirational angle for both teams but its just so simple to me, and plus my arm chair quarterbacking degree and secret agent status wouldnt allow me to elaborate if I did....ScoutsOut

The day has finally arrived. A couple final thoughts. All week, we have gone back and forth about the great offenses that will take the field today. However, we all know that defense wins championships. I have felt all year that the LH defense has been the heart and soul of the team. They have been really good. This is LH's best defense in the Vance era. They are just flat out good. I think this will be the difference today.

To all (both teams) - Safe travels today. We are about to experience a meeting of the Titans. It will be something to remember.

Gilmer usually does the opposite of what everyone expects, so I would imagine they'll be pretty pass-happy today, no matter if hurricane-force winds break out.

I don't think it's much of a secret, although I have not heard it from any official sources, that several of the offensive players will largely (and some of them are VERY large) be going both ways today.

Let me say it one more time.

Congratulations to Liberty Hill.

You guys are just as FOR REAL as everyone has been saying.

I don't blame you for being cocky.

Your team has cashed every check you've ever written with your keyboards.

We have been "thunderstruck."

The defense did come to play. Congratulations LH on a great season. Congratulations to Gilmer, not too many teams are 14-1.

Congrats to LH for another great run. To Gilmer as well for another fine season.

Hats off to Traylor for coaching wide open and giving his kids the chance against th "MACHINE".

Uh "Thunderstruck"!....Now go beat them Patriots, I'll be pulling for you LH.....(darn I think I have been Panthersized)?

FYI-Stump will be having surgery on Mon. for his dislocated thumb he sustained in the Wylie game, prayers go out to him and all that may have sustained injuries during the course of this year. Good luck next year....

Thanks ScoutsOut. Gilmer has some great athletes and Stump should be really good next year. I sure you guys will be making another run at it.

The word around town is one of our running backs Clint Gavin #45 is also going to need surgery on his knee form a hit a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately this is a part of the game but the kids did a great job of playing through it.

Apparently, a BUNCH! :D  ;)

You know, I've just reread MOST of this thread again this morning. I found a few posts along the way that I had thought were worth quoting, with a smug response. However, I just couldn't bring myself to do so. Regardless of what a bunch of "fans" say, two sets of high school kids lined up last night, and I can't and won't take away from that. I will say that having a number of D1 recruits isn't always enough to beat a "team". I do offer my congratulations to the Gilmer Buckeyes for their outstanding season and wish all the players the best of luck in the future.

I made this post on smoaky earlier in the week. And I stand by it today, with the exception that I am now convinced that Cuero was the best we played this year.

I've read this entire thread, and to my knowledge, I am the first "homer" LH fan to actually post on it. No player, coach OR fan is overlooking Gilmer and we are very aware that Gilmer will be the best team we have played since Cuero, and possibly all year. I've never seen Gilmer play, nor have I seen film. I do have friends that have seen them a few times and feel that the info they've given me is more than enough for me to know that our players will have to play their best game of the year both on offense and defense. That might not be enough, but they will leave it all on the field.

And if you haven't seen us play? Well, hopefully you'll be in for a surprise. Lots of folks find our team "boring" because we don't pass much. We will run it, and run it, and run it some more. And just when you think we're finally going to pass, BOOM...we'll run again. ;) By the time you in the stands figure out who has the ball, he may be down field 10-15 yards. I've watched us run this for 7 seasons now, and I still occasionally get busted cheering for the wrong back.

As far being a "machine", I've heard that from many folks and most of them are not from here, but have watched us play. The key is the O-line. I can't say they're the best in the state, but every one of them runs their assignment with intensity and very few mistakes. Over the years, I've heard all the ways to stop us. "All you have to do is watch the pulling guards" - yeah that works fine until it's a fake pull. "All you have to do play assignment defense" - heard that last year from a team in the Northern portion of the state. ;) Oh yeah, then there's the "They can't pass or when they do they're not very good at it" - 2/2, 107 yds, 1 TD last night.

Again, we are very aware that Gilmer is one of the top two teams for us all season. I do have a feeling once the dust is settled around 7:00 or so Saturday evening, that Gilmer folks will realize that we may very well be the best team they've faced as well.

One last thing I want to say. Over and over again for weeks (including last year), I have read about our weak, suspect secondary. All I can say is you should hope we never get a "good" secondary.  ;)

Our Stats (for the year):

Opponents
Rushing: 302 att - 844 yds | 60.3 yds/g (2.8 yds/car)
Passing: 173 - 339 - 1792 yds | 128 yds/g
Total: 641 - 2636 yds | 188.3 yds/g

Panthers
Rushing: 754 att - 5947 yds | 424.8 yds/g (7.89 yds/car)
Passing: 16 - 34 - 607 yds | 43.4 yds/g
Total: 770 - 6554 yds | 468.1 yds/g

I have to give cudos to my Buckeyes too. There are untold number of schools who would have loved to traded places with you and just had an opportunity to play in the state game. Hold your heads high. Looking forward to another great year in 2008.

I would like to congratulate the Panthers for a most impressive victory and I'm looking for many more in the next 3 years. I am truely proud to call Liberty Hill home.

With that being said, I wanted to congratulate the Buckeye's on a great season and a classy program.
It's fun to get on here and banter back and forth  with fans of the teams we compete against and anticipate the post game smack-talking/crow-eating.
Having said that, I have always found it to be much less pleasant to watch others eat crow when their team conducts themselves with class and dignity as Gilmer did (and Cuero, Celina and others). So I for one do not care if the Gilmer fans pull a chair up to the crow buffet. They love their team as do we and unfortunately they must live with what-could-have-been. All good fans/parents should believe in their team and express confidence in those kids they support. That's what it means to be a fan. Oh, that reminds me. We are talking about 15, 16, 17 & 18 year-old kids playing their hearts out.
Let's not forget that while we're bashing their performances.

Merry CHRISTmas to all! I have to go make up my cardboard sign to raise money for the 2 presents my boys will be getting...:helpme:
