I was wondering the same thing! If it's "speed" they're talking about, I don't know who started that "East Texas speed" thing, but it is tiresome. I, for one, am not convinced that there is enough disparity to warrant bringing it up. There was a time many years ago where the "speed" difference would've come into play, but not too often in the last decade or so for sure. All I know is that I can run the 40 in 4.2........:D ...........and I can type 40 WPM now that I've read this thread!

There could be a perfect storm brewing Friday night at the DISD Jesse Owens Memorial Complex in south Dallas.
To the south-southeast is the Chris Bosh South Dallas Hoopfest, a boys basketball tournament with four games each on Friday and Saturday, held at Davis Field House, part of the Owens Complex. The marquee matchup of Friday's games is a 7 p.m. tip-off between state-ranked Lincoln and The Colony, featuring one of the nation's best players, Lincoln forward LeBryan Nash.
To the north-northwest is the Class 3A Division II state semifinals between Brownwood (14-0) and Carthage (12-2), 7:30 Friday at Kincaide Stadium, part of the Owens Complex. The game pits the state's No. 1 3A team, Brownwood, and future UT receiver Jaxon Shipley (brother of Jordan) against the two-time defending 3A Division II state champs Carthage.
On either side is about 3,000 parking spots shared between both sites, with potential overflow going to D.A. Hulcy Middle School just to the south.
Both Carthage and Brownwood officials expect a near-sellout of Kincaide Stadium, which seats 15,000. Estimates of the Carthage crowd that travelled last year to SMU for the its state championship final were at least 6,000. In last week's game, Monahans and Brownwood nearly packed the 16,700-seat San Angelo Stadium, about 100 miles from Brownwood.
Both teams have to travel about 160 miles to get to Kincaide, but both expect to travel well. Brownwood -- which is letting out school early on Friday -- had only sold about 1,500 tickets at this point, according to athletic administrative assistant Lisa Jaso. But Jaso said that Brownwood typically sells most of its tickets on site. Carthage did not have a total number of ticket sales at this point, but expected to bring a sizable crowd. As the home team against Argyle last week at Tyler Rose Stadium, Carthage nearly packed the home stands, approximately 7,000 seats.
DISD officials said they aren't worried about parking. Stay tuned.

Quintet forms leadership core for Carthage Bulldogs

CARTHAGE — Two years ago, four sophomores and a freshman played significant roles as Carthage won its first football state championship. Monday at Bulldog Stadium, four seniors and a junior stood at the precipice of Carthage's third consecutive state semifinal berth as the unquestioned leaders of a program on a 16-game postseason winning streak.

Kendall Thompson has almost three full seasons to his credit as a starting linebacker for Carthage. Cortlyn Ware, a two-way starter in 2010, can say the same about his cornerback spot. Anthony Morgan started at safety as a sophomore before moving to quarterback in 2009 and teaming with wideout Jalen Claiborne to form the most prolific pass-catch combo in school history. Edward Pope, who reclaimed his starting safety spot after missing the first six games of 2010 with a knee injury, is a difference-making junior on both sides of the ball thanks to his combination of height (6-3) and athleticism.

The quintet forms the core of Carthage's veteran leadership entering Friday's Class 3A Division II state semifinal against wire-to-wire No. 1 Brownwood (14-0).

"Like the other night (against Argyle) when things were going bad, those guys stepped it up. Every one of them played well," said head coach Scott Surratt, who is 51-7 at Carthage since arriving in 2007. "Those guys in big games, we know they're going to be there because they've been there and they're not going to have big eyes. The experience of the two state championships and all the big games we've been in, it's just helped those guys tremendously. We lean toward our leaders and better players in big games."

Thompson, a 6-3, 235-pound linebacker bound for Austin as he plans to sign with Texas come February, recorded 92 tackles and three interceptions as a sophomore and had two sacks in Carthage's 49-37 state title victory against Celina. Last season, his 144 tackles led the team as the Bulldogs won back-to-back 3A Division II crowns. After missing three games during the 2010 non-district schedule, Thompson has rebounded to be the defensive stalwart his teammates expected him to be this season.

Thompson said the experience of playing varsity football since the 2007 playoffs has paid off for him, Claiborne, Morgan and Ware.

"Our sophomore year we were young and we didn't really know what we were doing. We were just out there trying to get our fundamentals down and everything," Thompson said. "We've grown up a lot. Sometimes they let me call the (defensive) plays. We've grown a lot since were sophomores."

Ware's four interceptions match Thompson's for the team lead. The 5-9, 165-pound third-year starting corner is also second on the team with 41 catches.

Claiborne has shattered the majority of Carthage's receiving records. He needs five catches for 100 this season, has eclipsed the 1,300-yard mark and is tied for the single-season touchdown catch record with 15. The 5-10, 170-pounder has also played in Carthage's secondary, especially against pass-happy offenses. Pope has four touchdown catches in eight games and a team-high 11 pass breakups from his safety spot.

Morgan, though, had perhaps the greatest two-way transformation, moving from free safety to quarterback once two-year starter Si'Darius Blackshire graduated. Morgan has left all of Blackshire's records in his rear-view mirror, throwing for 73 touchdowns and more than 6,000 yards in two seasons under center.

The undersized-but-effective quarterback said he expected younger teammates to look to him for guidance entering the 2010 season.

"I wanted people to look up at me. Be the senior and be the role model," Morgan said. "People look at me whenever stuff's on the line."

Not only Morgan's teammates trust him in key situations, but his coaches do as well, allowing him to dictate pre-snap decisions on the field.

"We let him check off. We give him options. He knows," Surratt said. "We'll give him a two- or three-play option, and we'll teach him during the week, and whatever he sees we live with."

The maturation process the fivesome has endured since 2008 has reflected on the growth of expectations within the program.

Claiborne and Morgan said the more the Bulldogs win, the higher the goals are set.

"Sophomore year it was all new to us," Claiborne said. "Our junior year we got kind of used to it. Senior year, now we expect to do it."

While Morgan's 3,100 passing yards, Claiborne's 95 catches and fellow senior Hunter Holland's 2,200 rushing yards fuel Carthage's firepower, the Bulldogs never would have reached the fifth week of the postseason without major defensive strides from September until now. Carthage surrendered 41 or more points in three consecutive weeks during the non-district schedule, losing twice as several sophomores and juniors acclimated themselves to increased defensive roles while Thompson and Pope missed time.

Thompson and Ware said without that learning experience, the defense, which sometimes features as many as seven non-senior starters, could not have picked off Dallas Madison quarterback Bryce Pearson four times, nor held Argyle quarterback Austin Aune to 8-for-24 passing during Carthage's past two playoff wins.

"As seniors, they expect us to know what to do and to teach them how to do it," Ware said. "We had a young team experience-wise, but everybody's gotten used to it now, so everything's starting to kick in good."

Surratt believes the development of the program's expectations is a direct result of the senior leadership he has gotten each of the four years he has coached at Carthage. Claiborne, Morgan, Thompson and Ware are simply taking their turn as this year's senior leaders. Pope will further establish himself as a leader in 2011, when he is a four-year varsity member and three-year starter with at least one all-state selection to his name.

For now, though, it's the class of 2011 paving the way in Carthage's third-consecutive extended postseason run.

"We just know it's our senior year, our time to shine," Thompson said. "We've helped them get their state championships. It's time for us to get ours."

Carthage hasn't listed height and weight for as long as I've been coming (not as long as many fans). When I asked about it a few years ago, I was told it had something to do with personal information and the UIL "prefers" it not be posted. Don't know how much truth there is to that. Kinda seems like they would just rather not advertise our strengths and/or weaknesses.

The lions will come out and probley lose the toss. Carthage will recieve and will go down and score. Evreybody from carthage starts getting some confidense but it doesnt last long. If they are smart they will then kick the ball out of bounce or some kinda pouch kick. I dont they they are dumb enough to kick it to shipley but since they have "TEAM SPEAD" then maybe they will. Next we just expose theyre defence and quickly score missing the xtra point to go down 7-6. After a 3 and out brownwood srtikes again to go up 13 -7. Carthage coaches began to panic after the fail to score again and relize that in order to keep the game close they must score evrey time they have the ball which they will not be able to do against a very stingy defense that gets better throghout the game. Then as the lions always do, they perfect the 2 min drill or 45 sec drill and score right b4 half taking the momentium . As we recive the ball to start the half we quick strike again and the carthage faithful start to relize the are out smarted, out coached, and out classed. halfway through the third quarter the game is all but over. Cathage down by 19 at this point trie to rally but just to little to late. They get frustrated and try a hurry up offense only to throw a pick 6 to Longoria or Mcshan. Halfway through the fourth, the carthage faithful try to beat the traffic and and throw in the tall. This game will not be as close as some might sugest. It is close for a quarter but the lions win big 47 -14

Naw, I saw on film your guys are very fast and quick, and most of the team is.
