Sinton volleyball repeates as district champions

Rachel Denny Clow/Caller-Times Sinton varsity volleyball players celebrate their
three game win over Aransas Pass Tuesday at Aransas Pass High School.

CORPUS CHRISTI — ARANSAS PASS Sinton’s fans came to Aransas Pass’ gym Tuesday night to watch their volleyball team win District 31-3A again.

The Pirates’ faithful didn’t go home disappointed, as fueled by a staggering late run in the opener, Sinton rolled past Aransas Pass, 25-22, 25-8, 25-18 to net their fourth straight district title.

The Pirates (28-8 overall, 13-1 in district play) atoned for a recent district loss to Orange Grove, which to set up Tuesday’s showdown.

“They knew the district title was on the line tonight and they came out with a vengeance,” Sinton coach Virginia Parsons said of her team, which receives a first-round playoff bye. “Sometimes it takes a loss to wake you up and they’ve come out fired up ever since (falling to Orange Grove).”

“It’s exciting — we didn’t want to break the tradition,” said Pirates middle blocker Brette Threadgill, one of 10 sophomores on the team this season. “We really wanted to show everybody that we could do it.”

The Pirates also snapped the Panthers’ (19-13, 11-3) seven match district winning streak in the process.

“Sinton has a good squad,” said Aransas Pass coach Terri Seidel, whose team will play Zapata in the bi-district playoffs sometime next week. “Second place is nothing to be ashamed of in this district — there are some really good teams in it.”

Threadgill and sophomore middle blocker Savannah Gorman had 14 and 12 kills respectively for Sinton, while Gorman and Pirates sophomore hitter Brittany Selby combined for 19 blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist Leslie Adame and sophomore setter/hitter Chelsea Martino had six and four aces respectively for Sinton. Martino and Pirates sophomore setter Kobi Sliva combined for 26 assists. Junior defensive specialist Alex Zapada and sophomore libero Cadie Vanecek had nine digs each to lead Sinton’s defense.

Senior middle blocker Leah Steadman had nine kills and three aces to lead the Panthers, while setter Abbey Hutchins and defensive specialist Baily Bradley had 24 assists and six digs respectively.

Aransas Pass stormed to a 20-16 lead in Game 1, before Sinton countered with a 9-2 run to take the opener. That included the final five points, as Adame had five straight service points and two aces to close out game. Threadgill also had a key kill and block for the Pirates during the key spurt.

Martino’s four service points and three aces staked the Pirates to a 6-1 lead in Game 2 and Sinton never relinquished that lead.

The Pirates, who also beat Aransas Pass in district play in Sinton, erased an early two point deficit in the finale with a 19-10 run to close out the Panthers and start their celebration.

Another thing to remember ithat benefited Sinton was that I don't think the teenage terminator was at the game. That decreased the risk.

    Thank you PPHSfan and Keith7!
