SportsDay boys basketball player of the week: Timothy Flentroy

    Timothy Flentroy, Madison

What he did: Flentroy led Madison to its first DISD/Coca-Cola Boys Tournament championship in a decade. Madison, a 3A team, beat two 5A and three 4A teams to win the tournament.

The stats: Flentroy averaged 22.5 points in six games last week. He followed five tournament games with a 25-point performance in Friday's 83-52 District 11-3A win against Roosevelt.

Who is he? A 6-0, 175-pound junior shooting guard.

He said it: "It's been a big week for us. All that comes from all the hard work we did this summer. We played hard and stayed smart."

Coach said it: "Tim bruised his left knee in our last scrimmage game, so we missed him for the first four weeks. He didn't really get into his groove until the Coca-Cola tournament. That was really like a coming out for him." – Damien Mobley

Did you know? Flentroy's father, Timothy Sr., was a safety at Madison in the late 1980s. ... One of Flentroy's first cousins, junior point guard Desmond Flentroy, also plays on the team. As freshmen, Tim and Desmond were teammates with Desmond's older brother, Anterrius Flentroy. ... Lil' Wayne and Young Jeezy are Flentroy's favorite rappers. LSU is his favorite team, and Kobe Bryant is his favorite athlete.

This boy is not the most athletic kid or strong kid. He is just tall and has a huge frame and heart. He wants his body to perform at a varsity level, but he can't make it do it. He knows he is not there yet and so do I. His words; "Dad I can start at some of those other schools, but at (random school), I will be the best I can be. I may never start on varsity, but I will know I gave it my best." Soon to be an after-school special.
