DAISETTA, Texas -- An isolated field in Liberty County sits several feet lower Wednesday after the ground caved in and left a sinkhole described as "the size of two football fields."

At about 10 a.m., a dozen workers at the Deloach Vacuum salt water disposal company in Daisetta began noticing cracks in the ground. Shortly after that, there was a dramatic collapse creating the sinkhole. Since then, the hole has continued to grow in size.

Officials said the sinkhole -- which has swallowed vehicles, trees and utility poles -- is about 200 yards wide and 100 feet deep. The closest home is about 100 yards away from the hole.

F.M. 770 near Daisetta has been closed to traffic because the sinkhole may creep onto the road, according to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office. The road remained closed at 5 p.m.

Emergency workers have evacuated a couple of families from their homes. Dozens of other homes and a school also sit near the sinkhole.

Sinkholes are common where salt domes sit beneath the surface, which appears to be why this sinkhole occurred. However, officials are still investigating the cause.

No injuries have been reported so far.

Daisetta, a town with a population of about 1,000, is approximately 60 miles northeast of Houston.

yeah it's been all over CNN and fox news

    i can see it now:

in 3 years, there will be an inspirational film about the Hull-Daisetta football team and how they overcame this tragedy to finish 7-3 and finish as the odd team out of a 4-way tie for first in district

Go Bobcats/Longhorns/Cowboys (and Mavs/Rangers/Stars and the Duke Blue Devils)
