Default 3A District Champions 1980-2007

I finally updated my 3A District Champion graphics to be color-coded like the 4A and 5A ones are.... here is the new, updated version with the 2007 Champs added in. This season Abilene Wylie notched their 9th consecutive #1 Playoff seed, tying the 3A record set by Vernon from 1989-1997.

I realize that there are many districts and many years in which there were 2, 3 or even 4 district co-champs, tri-champs, etc. officially proclaimed but this is a table of the team that got the top seed for each district going in to the playoffs, or in other words, this is a table of teams that would have qualified for the playoffs if the 1 team per district rule (pre-1982) was still in effect.

Please let me know if you see any obvious errors and I will correct them...

The color coding is indicative of the general location of the entire district for each particular year, not the individual team listed, thus for example, Madisonville could possibly be dark blue when part of a district including mainly CenTex area teams, in brown when in a district of primarily DFW area teams and light blue when in a district primarily of East Texas teams.

Region I-3A District Winners (1980-2007)

Far West Texas - dark Red
Panhandle - Green
West Central Texas - Purple
North Central Texas/DFW area - Brown
Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue

Region II-3A District Winners (1980-2007)

North Central Texas/DFW area - Brown
Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue
East Texas - light Blue
Southeast Texas/Greater Houston area - Light Red

Region III-3A District Winners (1980-2007)

Region IV-3A District Winners (1980-2007)

Southeast Texas/Greater Houston area - light Red
Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue
South Texas/San Antonio-Corpus-Rio Grande Valley - Orange

This would great if the Regional Editors incorporated each graphic on their pages!

A question for anyone up around the Vernon/Wichita Falls area...

I had a difficult time deciding in which portion of the state to place you guys when color coding the above graphics....

do you consider yourself North Texas? West Texas? Southern Panhandle? or something else?

I've seen several heated discussions on multiple message boards over the years trying to figure out where west Texas starts! Abilene was usually in the middle of the discussions! That and where the mall is in Abilene!

I hope you have better luck getting an answer to your question!

One thing I did notice compiling this is that 3A sure has changed a lot since 1980.... only 11 of the 32 district champs from 1980 are still aligned to the 3A Classification

14 are 2A

5 are now 4A

and

2 are now 5A

The teams who have been the #1 seed from their district in the playoffs the most times since the shift in classifications in 1980 is as follows:

15 times
Crockett
Port Isabel
Cuero

14 times
Newton

13 times
Cameron Yoe
Littlefield
Abilene Wylie

12 times
Daingerfield

11 times
Forney
Sinton
Gilmer
Vernon

10 times
Ballinger
Commerce
Medina Valley
Perryton

9 times
Alvarado
Atlanta
Burnet
Childress
Sweeny
Tatum

Abilene Wylie has the longest active streak currently with 9 in a row (1999-2007) tying Vernon (1989-1997) for the most consecutively in 3A.

The statewide record prior to 1982 was Gregory-Portland's 12 consecutive district titles and playoff appearances from 1969-1980 and the record in the largest classification was 10 consecutive for Highland Park from 1941-1950. Since 1982 both Pilot Point (1979-1990) and Austin Westlake (1991-2002) have equalled Gregory-Portland's streak of 12 consecutive district titles but no one has yet to surpass it....

It is amazing to see the changes!!

In 4-3A, out of the 15 different district champs listed...only 5 are still in 3A.

Most have moved to 2A and two I have never heard of before; Boyd and Springtown!!

Boyd is 2A just south of Decatur and won the D1 championship over Newton in 2004

Springtown is 4A just southwest of Boyd

District 4-3A was a three way tie in 04 and 05. Snyder lost to Sweetwater, who lost to Wylie, who lost to Snyder.

Navasota and Rice Consol. also won D20 in 2004. It was a three way tie between Bellville, Navasota, and Rice Consol.
