Default Man thrown off Plane for Bush T-shirt

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- A man was removed from a Qantas flight to London because he would not take off a T-shirt with a picture of President Bush and the slogan "World's 1 terrorist."

Allen Jasson said Monday he was turned away last Friday at a Qantas departure gate in Melbourne.

Jasson said he wore the shirt unchallenged through official security checks, then approached a Qantas staff member at the gate to draw attention to it because he had been asked to remove it before boarding a domestic flight days earlier.

"I raised the issue, but I wanted primarily to thank Qantas for relenting when he told me: 'I'm surprised you got this far, the staff should have stopped you,"' Jasson said.

Qantas Airways in a statement: "Whether made verbally or on a T-shirt, comments with the potential to offend other customers or threaten the security of a Qantas group aircraft will not be tolerated."

Jasson, an Australian who lives in London, said Qantas had offered to put him on another flight if he does not wear the shirt. But he has declined.

"I might forfeit the fare, but I have made up my mind that I would rather stand up for the principle of free speech," he said.

He said he was considering suing the airline, but it was not immediately clear under what law.

Good for the airlines. We may not always agree, but that's going too far.

If this was America, it would be a totally different story, though.

I still think that's going too far. But I'm sure the ACLU would jump to his defense.

At the same time, businesses do reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, so I'm kind of in the middle of the road on this. I can understand where the airline was coming from, but at the same time, it is preventing freedom of speech. Could make for an interesting argument either way, really.

The deal is that it IS freedom of speech, you are correct... but you are correct again in that it's the airlines business, they may have the right to refuse anyone if they do not comply with their rules etc...

Freedom of Speech, come on... only if you fit the right profile... the 1st amendment is so out of whack thanks to the ACLU who knows what is going on... business has to right to disallow service to whoever...
I am white, if I say I am proud to be white people would say I am a racist... if I ask to speak about my faith then people say it is against their 1st amendment, which I am still trying to find where Madison wrote about seperation of church and state, it just says there will be no official religion, but if those men were alive today, they would say that the religion is to be Christianity... most of them did not like Judaism either... sorry that is the truth... the dude wanted a response and he got it... people have the right to be offended and they have the right to say whatever, and people will also have the right to be offended... they need to get over themselves

I do not care about Londoners, Aussies or the Dixie Chicks, or what Tim Robbins, Susan Suranden, and the fat Baldwin brothers think... or Tom Cruise for that matter... Hollywood calls us strange because we believe in Christianity but yet they believe that aliens once inhabited the earth and will return...

On your first statement, you'd only be considered a racist if you follwed "I am proud to be white" with a statement such as "because _______ people are disgusting pigs" or something of the sort. If you have to bring down another ethnicity to validate your pride, you are indeed a racist. Note, I'm not making an accusation.

Second. Well, I can't speak for our founding fathers, but I found a few of their quotes.

Thomas Jefferson, third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, said:"I trust that there is not a young man now living in the United States who will not die a Unitarian." He referred to the Revelation of St. John as "the ravings of a maniac" and wrote:
The Christian priesthood, finding the doctrines of Christ levelled to every understanding and too plain to need explanation, saw, in the mysticisms of Plato, materials with which they might build up an artificial system which might, from its indistinctness, admit everlasting controversy, give employment for their order, and introduce it to profit, power, and pre-eminence. The doctrines which flowed from the lips of Jesus himself are within the comprehension of a child; but thousands of volumes have not yet explained the Platonisms engrafted on them: and for this obvious reason that nonsense can never be explained."
    From:
Thomas Jefferson, an Intimate History by Fawn M. Brodie, p. 453 (1974, W.W) Norton and Co. Inc. New York, NY) Quoting a letter by TJ to Alexander Smyth Jan 17, 1825, and Thomas Jefferson, Passionate Pilgrim by Alf Mapp Jr., pp. 246 (1991, Madison Books, Lanham, MD) quoting letter by TJ to John Adams, July 5, 1814.

"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter." -- Thomas Jefferson (letter to J. Adams April 11,1823)

James Madison, fourth president and father of the Constitution, was not religious in any conventional sense. "Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise."
"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."
    From:
The Madisons by Virginia Moore, P. 43 (1979, McGraw-Hill Co. New York, NY) quoting a letter by JM to William Bradford April 1, 1774, and James Madison, A Biography in his Own Words, edited by Joseph Gardner, p. 93, (1974, Newsweek, New York, NY) Quoting Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments by JM, June 1785.

George Washington, the first president of the United States, never declared himself a Christian according to contemporary reports or in any of his voluminous correspondence. Washington Championed the cause of freedom from religious intolerance and compulsion. When John Murray (a universalist who denied the existence of hell) was invited to become an army chaplain, the other chaplains petitioned Washington for his dismissal. Instead, Washington gave him the appointment. On his deathbed, Washinton uttered no words of a religious nature and did not call for a clergyman to be in attendance.
    From:
George Washington and Religion by Paul F. Boller Jr., pp. 16, 87, 88, 108, 113, 121, 127 (1963, Southern Methodist University Press, Dallas, TX)

There are other examples here. Now, I'm sure there were some who were indeed staunch Christians, and would have loved to select it as a national religion. But keep in mind most of those fleeing England did so due to a national religion. Why would they establish on in their new country? I have no problem with your faith, and I applaud that of many when they are able to follow the faith without the hypocricy that so often comes along with it. I have no problem with your practice of faith, nor should anyone, so long as you show others the same courtesy.

funny, how these same men wanted a Preacher of Christian Faith to lead them every day in their guidance of writing the Constitution... the Preacher was even paid... George always asked for Divine Guidance... Madison, well he was Madison... but Jefferson was also a different fellow... he hated being rich... jefferson hated just about everything... I have books on all the Founding Fathers back at the house because the men who wrote that document are very interesting fellows...
