Default Big day for Islanders RUSS.....

    Big day......

The Texas A&M-Corpus athletic department will hit another milestone Friday night when the Islander volleyball team hosts Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Friday in Moody Fieldhouse. The Islanders will turn around to face Stephen F. Austin the following day at 2 p.m.

The Islanders have already competed in conference contests this season with the cross country team running in two meets thus far, but Friday night will mark the first head-to-head competition against a Southland foe this season.

The Bearkats will come to Corpus Christi with a 5-5 record and the match will be the first SLC contest of the year for them as well. Sam Houston is coming off a 3-0 loss to Georgia Tech, but won back-to-back matches against Stetson and South Florida before the loss.

A&M-Corpus Christi won its first match of the season, taking a 3-0 win over Loyola (Md.), but have lost nine straight. Two of those loses have come against top-25 opponents.

The Islanders are led offensively by Christie Feliz and Kasey McBrearty. Feliz leads the team with 82 kills, while McBrearty leads in kills per game with 3.00. McBrearty missed four matches due to an injury. Setter Paula Araujo leads the team in attack percentage with a .271 mark, which ranks seventh in the league. She also ranks 10th in assists with 8.88 per game.
Defensively, libero Laura North leads the team with 116 digs and ranks eighth in the SLC with 3.87 per game.

Before coming to Corpus Christi, Stephen F. Austin will take on UTSA on Friday night. The Ladyjacks post the league’s best record at 9-3 with their last loss coming on Sept. 8 when Baylor took a 3-0 victory.
