A Pasadena basketball coach with a criminal history remained free on bond Tuesday after being charged with fondling a 14-year-old girl on his team.

David Escareno, 42, who coached a select basketball team of teenage girls, is accused of taking the girl to his home April 8 and inappropriately touching her, Pasadena police spokesman Sgt. J.M. Baird said.
According to the girl, Escareno picked her up to take her to practice but then said he had to stop at his home in the 2800 block of North to change clothes, Baird said. While there, he began to rub the girl's leg because she had a hamstring injury, and that led to the inappropriate touching, Baird said.
Escareno was arrested Friday and released on $20,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for May 31.
Escareno has a criminal history dating to an aggravated assault charge in 1979. In that case, Escareno pleaded guilty and was given three years' deferred adjudication.
A sex-abuse case filed in 2003 was dismissed after the victim recanted, and another sex-abuse case filed in 2004 was dropped when a grand jury failed to indict him.
