    AROUND THE HORN

    LIONS PULL UPSET

When the nightmare began again for the Castleberry baseball team Friday, coach O.J. Holcomb stepped in.

His team had just committed three errors in the fourth inning, allowing a 3-3 tie with District 7-3A champ Decatur (21-7, 9-1) to slip into a five-run deficit.

"The last time we faced them, the same thing happened, and we gave up 10 runs in the inning," said Holcomb, referring to a 12-2 loss to the Eagles. "I just told them that good teams have to come back from bad innings. You don't have to do it all at once, but you have to fight to stay in it."

The Lions (11-12, 7-3) took heart. Junior relief pitchers Tony Steward and Roman Mercado tossed three scoreless innings, and Castleberry scored five runs over the fifth and sixth to tie the game.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions loaded the bases. Decatur reliever Russell Pryor got one out before a passed ball scored James Lawless from third, giving the Lions a 9-8 victory.

The Eagles, who earlier in the week downed Lake Worth 21-6, hadn't lost a district game until Friday.

Castleberry will face Glen Rose (15-10, 6-4 District 8-3A) in a three-game bi-district series starting at 5 p.m. Thursday at Mineral Wells.
