Default i saw this coming. (Brooks Kieschnick)

HOUSTON, TX. – The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed pitcher/outfielder Brooks Kieschnick to a minor league contract. The announcement was made by General Manager Tim Purpura.

Kieschnick, 32 will report to Double A Corpus Christi. The Hooks begin their inaugural season tonight at San Antonio. A native of Corpus Christi, Kieschnick is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA (48ER/96IP) in 74 major league appearances. As a hitter, he has hit .248 (76x306) with 16 home runs and 46 RBI in 260 career big league games.

"Our pass list just got a little larger," said Hooks General Manager Ken Schrom. "Seriously, this is going to be huge," Schrom added, "to have Brooks here for the start of inaugural season couldn't have been scripted any better."

Kieschnick has played in parts of six seasons with the Chicago Cubs (1996-97), Cincinnati (2000), Colorado (2001), and the Brewers (2003-04). He was 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA (17ER/43IP) in 32 games for the Brewers in 2004 while also hitting .270 (17x63) with one home run and seven RBI. Kieschnick hit .300 (21x70) with seven home runs and 12 RBI for the Brewers in 2003.

"Kieschnick's Korner just took on a whole new meaning," said Hooks President J.J. Gottsch, referring to the group picnic area just beyond the right-field fence at Whataburger Field. "Fans will get a chance to catch homeruns from the (group) area's namesake."

A former All-State performer at Corpus Christi’s Carroll High School, Kieschnick was a three-time All-American at the University of Texas. He was a three-time Southwest Conference Player of the Year, and also twice earned the Dick Howser Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate player. He was selected in the first round (10th overall) of the June 1993 draft.

Tickets for the last nine games of the Hooks first 10-game homestand (April 18-26) are available by calling (361) 561-4665 or on line at www.cchooks.com. Opening day is sold out.
