Panther track team scores big at Lubbock indoor meet

The Fort Stockton Panthers finished fourth in the Lubbock Indoor Invitational Feb. 19.

The track meet was an open meet with Class A through Class 5A teams competing and was ranked by a power-point system, not scored like a conventional track meet. Fort Stockton was the only Class 3A team in the top 10. Other schools or track clubs rounding out the top 10 were Permian, Canyon Randall, Belton, Odessa High, Abilene Cooper, Dallas Pinkston, Wichita Falls Rider, Dallas Greyhound Track Club and Lubbock Coronado.

Panthers make small splash at state

The Fort Stockton Panther swim team finished its long, competitive season Saturday night at the State Championship Meet in Austin.

The Panthers' record-holding medley relay team of sophomore Matt Agres, juniors Denver Freeman and Jason Rice, and sophomore Jay Orona had the 10th fastest time in the state but were disqualified for an exchange infraction.
Freeeman tied for sixth place in the consolation finals of the 100-yard breaststroke.

"Beginning with the first meet Sept. 18, 2004, the boys swim team had a state meet trip in mind," said Mike Dupree, Fort Stockton swim coach. "The road between setting a goal and the realization of a goal is long, difficult and full of distractions. With the qualification for the state finals, the all-underclass team has reached the potential of becoming one of the elite teams in the state. But once again, the goal that is set has a payment due in the form work and sacrifices."

Despite the disappointment by disqualification, Dupree said, the Panther swimmers immediately started training plans and strategies for the next season.

well it has nothing to do with going south, the weather was bad and alot of teams did not want to risk traveling. It was raining all weekend and any coach that is willing to keep the best intrest for his runners is a good coach. There are other meets, this weekend in pecos is one. I think it was a smart call even though the comanche relays are classic.
