    Default Gonzales vs Wharton

    Gonzales holds off Wharton

    February 23, 2005

With six seconds to play, a costly decision by the Wharton Tigers helped propel the Gonzales Apaches to a 59-57 Class 3A bi-district playoff win.

Trying to inbound the ball with six seconds left in a 55-55 tie and no timeouts, the Tigers' ball handler tried to call timeout when he couldn't get the ball in and the Tigers were hit with a technical foul.

Gonzales' David Ontiveros then hit both free throws to seal the victory for the Apaches (25-7) and moved them into the area playoffs where they will face Ingram Moore in a 7:30 p.m. contest Friday at Smithson Valley High School. Wharton ends the year at 10-18.

"Wharton had some good athletes that could get up and down the court but we hung tough and pulled it out," Gonzales coach Shawn Dalbert said.

Gonzales, down 30-20 at the half, did not gain its first lead until the 3:1 mark of the fourth period.

Both teams turned in strong shooting performance as Gonzales hit 24 of 57 shots and Wharton 22 of 44, but it was turnovers, especially in the second half that proved to be the difference in Gonzales' comeback. Gonzales had only four turnovers in the second half, while forcing Wharton into 13.

Ontiveros and Kash Greathouse each scored 12 points ot lead Gonzales, while Nic Crozier added 10.

Jamial Shelton paced Wharton with 20, while Trey Jones added 18 and Felipe Aguilar had 11.

    Class 3A

West Oso vs. Goliad, 5:30 p.m., Ingleside

District 31-3A champion West Oso received a first round playoff bye after disposing of Orange Grove Grove at home in its district finale. The Bears received a lift when they got junior forward/post Galen Gilmore back near the end of the district season. Gilmore averages 10 points and more than seven rebounds per game and his inside play has come in handy for the absence of the injured post/forward Isiah Sullivan, who missed the past several games because of a dislocated shoulder injury.

Goliad's Collyn Kelley had quite a regular season and leads the Tigers with a 17.2 points per game average. Adam Morris (13 points), Joseph Boone (11.7) and Blake Mead (10.1) also average double figures in scoring for Goliad, while Matt Niemeyer and Kelley have combined for more than 90 3-pointers on the year.

Aransas Pass vs. Zapata, 7:30 p.m, Robstown

District 30-3A co-champion Aransas Pass is coming off a district playoff victory against Goliad for first place in the district. The Panthers flexed their muscles inside against the Tigers as posts Matt Hall and Eric Mingus combined for 38 points in their 72-51 victory against Goliad recently. Forward Marcus Hernandez also scored 10 points in that game and gives Aransas Pass coach Glen Hayes another weapon to use on offense.

District 31-3A runner-up Zapata features strong guard play led by senior Jose Abel Villarreal. Villarreal runs the floor well and knows how to cut to the basket to score or at least get to the free throw line. Senior forward Rene Chapa has a good outside shooting touch and is another good scoring option for the Hawks.

    Saturday's Game

    Class 3A area

Sinton vs. Rio Hondo, 4 p.m., Falfurrias

Sinton is fresh off this past Monday's 69-56 bi-district victory over Carrizo Springs. Sinton made an amazing run just to get into the playoffs, as the Pirates tied for the final playoff spot in District 30-3A with a 2-6 district mark and had to knock off Mathis and Ingleside just to make it to postseason play.

The Bobcats, meanwhile, received a first round playoff bye for winning District 32-3A.

Goliad's Adam Morris has a sister (I asume) that is a sophomore and plays for Goliad girls. She is very good.

    Goliad stuns the short-handed Bears
District 31-3A champs lose in the area round
    By Matt Young Caller-Times
    February 26, 2005

INGLESIDE - Goliad boys basketball coach David Kelly has no problem admitting he didn't want to play West Oso this early in the playoffs.

Now, Kelly's just glad it's over, and West Oso wishes it never would have happened. Goliad took advantage of a short-handed Bears squad, dealing West Oso a 58-54 loss in the area playoffs Friday.

West Oso, which was coming off a state tournament appearance a year ago, played without leading scorer Isiah Sullivan, who has a dislocated shoulder, and leading rebounder Galen Gilmore, who was ineligible for Friday's game according to Bears coach Floyd Campbell. "That hurt us, but a lot of things hurt us," Campbell said. "We can't make excuses. We've had injuries and guys missing all season. It's just been that kind of year for us."

When Goliad and Aransas Pass tied for the District 30-3A title, they opted to meet in a district playoff to decide who would get the district's top seed. The winner would get the bye, but more importantly, the winner would also be seeded on the opposite side of the bracket from West Oso. "No one in our district wanted to get second, because that meant playing West Oso," Kelly said. "You never want to have to play West Oso. They're always so quick, and so well coached. Getting this win and getting past them is a big monkey off our backs."

After a back-and-forth first half, Goliad took control with a 90 run midway through the third quarter that turned a four-point deficit into a five-point lead.
Sandwiched in that run was a crucial fourth foul called on West Oso's Vernon Dixon. Saddled with foul trouble, Dixon - who, along with freshman Gene Edwards, scored a team-high 15 points - had to go to the bench with his team down 33-30 with four minutes left in the third. By the time Dixon returned, West Oso trailed 44-35 with 5:50 remaining in the game. "The fouls cost us," Dixon said. "The team needed me out there."

The Bears still trailed by nine with 2:51 remaining, but they rallied late. Dixon went to the freethrow line three straight times - connecting on three of six - and Doug Nichols hit a couple foul shots to cut the deficit to 50-47 with 1:15 left. However, West Oso was forced to foul down the stretch, and Goliad didn't miss from the charity stripe. The Tigers made 17 of 18 free throws in the game, including six straight in the final minute.

While Goliad celebrated its win and turned its thoughts to the region quarterfinals, West Oso was left to ponder what could have been.
"(West Oso playing without Gilmore) really did make a difference," Kelly said.
