Default Ingleside vs. Mathis ... District 30-3a

In the Caller Times this morning......

Mustangs win battle of 30-3A's unbeatens

MATHIS - Ingleside sure knew how to make an entrance Tuesday night - an entry pass into the lane that is.

And the Mustangs' interior passing worked to perfection for them, too, during Tuesday's girls basketball showdown of District 30-3A unbeaten teams.

Ingleside's first-half passing proved too much for Mathis as the Mustangs used a huge first-half run to hang on for a 44-37 victory at the Mathis Event Center.

Ingleside improved to 21-6 overall and 4-0 in district games, while Mathis fell to 15-7, 2-1.

"We didn't have that much of an outside game, so our inside game was good enough tonight," Ingleside girls coach John Reyes said of the Mustangs, who connected on only one 3-pointer. "(The Pirates) knew who our scorers were, but we have five players who can play on offense or defense at any given time."

Ingleside junior post Katie Sanders - who averages a double-double - led the Mustangs with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Pirates senior Andrea Garcia had nine of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter, while teammate Brittanea Zinsmeyer added nine points.

"We're still working on our consistency," Mathis first-year girls coach Ruben Ramon said. "We've got to start playing all four quarters, and once we do that we're going to be a tough team to beat."

The Pirates erased an early four-point deficit and tied the game at 6 on Garcia's driving bank shot. Highlighted by Sanders' six points, guard Aima Adelan's 3-pointer and two consecutive assists by forward Britney Foss (who finished with 13 points), Ingleside scored the next 11 points to forge ahead, 17-6. That was all part of a 17-4 run by the Mustangs capped by forward Kelsi Kucera's basket.

Ingleside would take a 23-12 lead into the half.

The Mustangs led by 13 late in the third quarter until Garcia scored seven consecutive points - the last ones coming on a pull-up 3-pointer - to bring the Pirates to within 29-23 with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Sanders' two free throws stopped the Mathis run to help Ingleside push its lead back to eight heading into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs led by as many as 12 in the final frame before Mathis closed to within four thanks to an 8-0 run capped by four free throws by Garcia.

Sanders' layup on the ensuing possession gave Ingleside a 40-34 lead with less than two minutes left in the game, and that was enough to hold off the Pirates.

    BOYS GAME

Ingleside opened the game with a 26-13 run and survived several Mathis comeback attempts en route to a 75-66 District 30-3A boys basketball victory Tuesday night at the Mathis Event Center.

Mustangs senior forward Ricky Calderon scored 11 of his 22 points in the first half, while post Shane Duhon and guard Zack Adams combined for 15 more first-half points to help Ingleside build a four-point halftime lead that was changed to three because of a scoring discrepancy.

Alex Alvarado, who led Mathis with 17 points, knocked down a jumper to pull the Pirates to within 61-59 a little more than three minutes into the fourth quarter, before Joel Johnson, who had a game-high 27 points, scored on a 3-point play and Calderon hit a jumper to give the Mustangs a seven-point cushion.

Forward Arnuld Encinia's 3-pointer trimmed Mathis' deficit to two points, before Johnson, Calderon and Harold Foster combined for seven points in the final two minutes to secure the victory for Ingleside.

Mathis forward Ron Huerta had 15 points and Leonzo DeLeon 10, while Huerta and Alvarado combined for four 3-pointers in the game.

The Mathis top scorer Andrea Garcia is a super athlete not only in basketball but also volleyball and softball. She has a scholarship to University of Texas at San Antonio but I don't know for what sport. She is planning to study medicine and be a doctor. She is very sharpe both in athletics and in the classroom.

Go Sinton Pirates and Lady Pirates! I also like old movies like "Dawn at Socorro." I also like the Tour de France. I like the Pelican West Band located at South Padre Island, Texas. Phil is PhiI is Bill is the compassion police. He is also the Sinton Matador. Some call him the Sinton Prophet. {Also Captain Obvious. } BEWARE OF THE HOWLING BEAR! He's going for the Corner - he's got it! Roy Orbison rules.
