From the Brazosport Facts

Powerliters from Danbury, Columbia and Sweeny punched their ticket to the Texas High School Powerlifting Associaton state meet by placing in the top two at their respective region meets Saturday.

Danbury had two lifters competing at the Region IV Division II meet in Baytown and one of them will get to lift one more time this season.

Lane Labauve was first in the 148-pound weight class with a 450 squat, 250 bench press and 435 deadlift for a total of 1,135 pounds. He was 35 pounds better than second-place Isaac Garza from Ganado.

Danbury’s other regional qualifier, Gaven Cameron in the 132 class, finished sixth with a 290 squat, 205 bench press and 300 deadlift for a 795 total.

Columbia, Sweeny and Brazosport competed in the Region IV Division 2 meet, also in Baytown, on Saturday.

The Bulldogs finished eighth as a team with 10 points. Columbia was 13th with seven points and Brazosport was 15th with four points. Jasper won the team title with 33 points.

Medals were awarded to the top five places in each weight class.

Sweeny was led by state qualifier Brady Byrd, who finished second in the 220 class with a 575 squat, 315 bench press and 485 deadlift for a total of 1,375 pounds. He tied Silsbee’s Marquell Hale for most weight lifted, but finished second because his weigh-in was higher.

Also medaling for the Bulldogs were Elias Arcia, fourth in the 148 class with a 405 squat, 315 bench press, 285 deadlift, 1,105 total; Nic Nail, fourth in the 242 class with a 520 squat, 375 bench press, 550 deadlift, 1,445 total; and Pristine Hystene, fifth in the 165 class with a 405 squat, 295 bench press, 420 deadlift, 1,120 total;

Sweeny’s other regional qualifers were Arman Chowdhury, sixth in the 275 class with a 555 squat, 365 bench press, 450 deadlift, 1,370 total; Logan Page, eighth in the 181 class with a 460 squat, 280 bench press, 410 deadlift, 1,150 total; and Cayde Brewer, ninth in the 132 class with a 300 squat, 200 bench press, 275 deadlift, 775 total.

Columbia was led by state qualifier Richie Garza, who was second in the 148 class with a 375 squat, 240 bench press and 425 deadlift for a total of 1,040 pounds.

Also medaling for the Roughnecks were Robert Martinez, fifth in the 148 class with a 365 squat, 250 bench press, 405 deadlift, 1,020 total and Braden Davis, fifth in the 220 weight class with a 475 squat, 365 bench press, 415 deadlift, 1,285 total.

Richard Salazar was the fourth Roughneck competing, finishing eighth in the 148 class with a 285 squat, 250 bench press, 335 deadlift for an 870 total.

Brazosport had three medalists. C.J. Calhoun was fourth in the 220 class with a 500 squat, 335 bench press and 470 deadlift for a 1,305 total; D’Orian Steamer, fifth in the 123 class with a 320 squat, 160 bench press and 310 deadlift for a 790 total; and Randy Robertson, fifth in the 275 class with a 560 squat, 330 bench press and 500 deadlift for a 1,390 total.

Other lifters for the Ships were Lorenzo Garza, ninth in the 123 class with a 265 squat, 170 bench press, 265 deadlift, 700 total; Matt Cunningham, 11th in the 123 class with a 255 squat, 145 bench press, 255 deadlift, 655 total; and Bennie Moore, who bombed out in the super heavyweight division.

The state qualifiers will be joined by Brazoswood’s Mario Vega, who won the 181 weight class at the Region IV Division I meet in Dickinson on March 2. Vega had a 510 squat, 355 bench press and 535 deadlift for a 1,400 total.

Also medaling for the Bucs was Adrian Ballew, who was third in the 114 class with a 295 squat, 180 bench press and 315 deadlift for a 790 total. He was five pounds behind second-place Jared Ali from The Woodlands. Caleb Manning was fifth in the 242 class with a 515 squat, 330 bench press and 525 deadlift for a 1,370 total.

The state meet will be March 23 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
