    Default Brazosport Facts Sports Roundup

    The Columbia Roughnecks lost a 3-1 decision to second-place Wharton on Saturday at Tiger Stadium to drop their District 24-4A record to 4-5-1.

    Juan Rosas scored the lone goal for the Necks’ as they are now 6-9-1 for the season.

    Columbia will return to the field at home against Palacios next Saturday.

    SOFTBALL

    Lady Bulldogs go 3-1 at San Marcos tourney

    The Sweeny Lady Bulldogs went 3-1 in their final four games at the San Marcos Tournament with wins against Navarro, Antonian Prep and Glen.

    In their final game Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs beat the Navarro Lady Panthers 5-1 behind four innings of work from Cassie Homniok who had seven strikeouts in five innings.

    Sweeny scored three of its runs in the first with single runs in the third and fourth. Allie Robertson led the batters with two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Bulldogs totaled seven hits in the win.

    The Lady Bulldogs started the day with a 7-6 win against Glenn, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.

    Alyssa Boozy led Sweeny at the plate with two hits and Brianna Amey had two RBIs. Sweeny outhit the Lady Grizzlies 6-2, but also had three errors on the field.

    Homniok went four innings with a couple of strikeouts. Alyssa Buentello closed it out with an inning of work.

    Sweeny scored three runs each in the second and third while the Grizzlies scored all of their runs in the fourth.

    The Lady Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard against Antonian Prep with an 8-1 win.

    Scoreless through the first five innings, each team scored a run in the sixth. But then the Sweeny bats came alive with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

    Brianna Salazar led the hitters with two as Kassidy Tucker and Amey each had one. Amey also drove in four runs with Salazar and Megan Kessler each driving in one.

    Corie Byrd went the distance in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs with 13 strikeouts.

    On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs took a 4-1 loss to Fredericksburg in five innings.

    The Billies scored three times in the first, adding a final run in the fifth. Sweeny outhit Fredericksburg 4-3.

    Byrd went five innings with seven strikeouts.

    Sweeny is now 13-6 on the season and will host Fort Bend Elkins on Monday afternoon.

    Lady Panthers get district win: The Danbury Lady Panthers improved to 2-0 in District 24-3A after beating Hitchcock 14-1 in a five-inning run-rule win on Friday.

    Danbury only had four hits in the win with Madison Garza, Paige Ham and Emma Garrett getting one. Paige and Aryssa Womack each drove in three runs with Maddison Ahart driving in two.

    Mallorie Munson went all five innings with 10 strikeouts.

    At 13-5-1 on the season, Danbury will host Boling on Tuesday.

    Lady ’Necks blanked: Columbia was shut out 12-0 by La Grange on Friday in a nondistrict matchup on the road.

    Senior Jessica Armstrong went 1 1/2 innings giving up eight hits, seven runs and a walk. Sophomore Kyleigh Bragg finished up the game, allowing four hits, five runs, three walks and getting three strikeouts.

    Leading hitters were Haylie Oakes with two while Mariah Velazquez and Jada Rhoades each had one.

    Columbia (5-6 overall) will hit the road on Tuesday at Clear Brook.

    Lady ’Neck JV beats Leopards: The Columbia junior varsity blanked La Grange, 4-0, to move to 2-0 on the season.

    Cassidy Sorensen pitched all four innings, giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.

    At the plate, Mya Savant, Makayla Campbell and Sorensen each had a hit; Jalyn Garcia also had an RBI and scored three runs; Carley Staples had a stolen base.

    BASEBALL

    Wildcats win again

    For the second time this week, the Angleton Wildcats beat Fort Bend Hightower in District 24-5A, this time 16-6 on Friday on the road.

    Jonas Kirkpatrick drove in four runs on three hits with a triple in the second and a single also in the second. Angleton had 13 hits in the win with Zack Medart, Ethan Ebner, Justus Mayon and Tyler Killion getting two hits each. Ebner and Killion drove in two runs each.

    Caleb Jackson went three innings allowing six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

    Angleton improved to 2-0 in district play and 5-4 on the season.

    Bulldogs go 2-2 at tourney: Sweeny finished up the Fort Bend Travis Tournament with an 8-0 shutout of Spring in five innings Saturday in Richmond.

    Senior Jackson Kiddy went four innings for the win with three strikeouts.

    Braden Norris had a couple of hits for the Bulldogs. Joe Effenberger drove in four runs with Quinton Martin and Caden Homniok each driving in one. Sweeny outhit the Lions 5-3.

    At 10-5 on the season, the Bulldogs will host Sealy on Tuesday.

    On Friday at the same tournament Sweeny was shutout 2-0 by the host Travis squad.

    Sweeny out hit the Tigers 4-3 with each team getting an error.

    Homniok and Nathan Nance each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

    Nance also went six inning with six strikeouts.

    Ships lose another one: Brazosport lost to Van Vleck 6-2 at the El Campo Tournament on Friday.

    Santana Casteneda(1-2) suffered the loss in relief of Race McIntyre.

    Offensively, Christian Guevara was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and run scored; Tanner Quick went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI; Eddie Flores and Nate Nixon added singles as well.

    Brazosport fell to 1-8-1 on the season.

    Necks’ lose final two: The Columbia Roughnecks played at the El Campo Tournament losing its final two games to El Campo and HYCA.

    Against the Ricebirds on Saturday the Roughnecks lost 11-1 in five innings of play.

    Columbia was out hit 10-5 as the defense had three errors. El Campo scored nine of those runs in the first inning.

    Senior Kelby Coburn had two hits with Mason Chupp driving in a run for Columbia.

    Blake Seller took the loss going four innings with four strikeouts.

    On Friday the Roughnecks lost an 8-2 decision to the Lions from HYCA.

    Columbia fell behind 6-1 after a couple of innings as they were out hit 9-6.

    Garrett Irwin led the hitters with two hits.

    Kade Reynolds went three innings with three strikeouts for the Necks.

    Columbia falls to 1-10 on the season and will host Houston Furr on Wednesday at Renfro Field.

    Wildcat JV loses close game: The Angleton Wildcat junior varsity lost a close game to Alvin Shadow Creek JV, 9-7 on Saturday at home.

    Down by seven runs in the seventh frame, Angleton fought back by scoring four runs, just coming up short. Those contributing to the come back was a single by Conner McDonald, a sacrifice fly by Caden Morrison, a double by Preston Guerra and a double by Brennan Browning.

    Angleton collected 11 hits with the Sharks getting 12 hits.

    Matthew Lantz took the loss going 4 1/2 innings allowing five hits, five runs while striking out four.

    Mikey Binderup went 3-for-4 at the plate.

    Bulldogs score win in six innings: The Sweeny Bulldog junior varsity beat Texas City 9-2 on Friday behind seven hits.

    Leading 3-2 in the fourth, the Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put it away.

    Collin Coker and Morgan Nance led the hitters with three hits each. Nance also drove in two runs.

    Garrett Nail went six innings for the win.
