Just found out long time down lower the bd62 passed away. He was a really great guy and will be sorely missed he loved high school football specially the Yoakum Bulldogs and even the Cuero Gobblers too. Can’t say enough about the man he will be very sorely missed by our community. God bless his family and keep them in his care.

I was with John and his wife recently, and he was giving her all his contacts, and wanted to make sure G Square and those who broadcast could be contacted when this sad day came. John was talking Bulldog and Gobbler football to the end. Be awesome if Cuero and Yoakum made the show together, and brought John a pair of Dewitt County titles this year, in his remembrance.

Surrounded by family, a great man of faith finished his race with the endurance of a champion. John “Johnny” Bishop, age 73, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018.

The thought of Johnny puts a smile on your face, but it’s his story of perseverance and hope that will leave us all inspired this blessed Thanksgiving. Johnny was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma on March 5, 1945 to the late John Paul and Bonnie Klaus.

The eldest of three boys, Johnny traveled with his military parents as they made their way to Texas after spending several years in Sacramento, California during the construction boom. As the family made their way to Texas, younger brothers Tommy and Roger where born. Eventually, settling with family in Ezzell the boys began life on a farm in the 1950’s. Dairy farming took extreme discipline. Johnnie was only 16 when his father died and being the person of integrity and responsibility that he was, never missed a beat and continued to work hard. As his mother grew ill, the boys stayed with their grandmother and relatives on the farm. Johnny went to college and then started what would turn out to be a 40 year career at DuPont-Lyondell in Victoria, Texas as Production Supervisor. Genuinely loved and respected by his colleagues, Johnny adored his teammates at DuPont and could remember stories with the most minute details about the plant he loved.

Having met the love of his life in 1964, Johnny and Wanda Bishop remain in love and were married for 52 years. Wanda and Johnny loved to travel with their best friends Sandra and Richard Jacobs and those travels led to many trips for Cajun food and music and late night domino matches (that the ladies say they won). He enjoyed his zydeco music. As the leaves turned however, everyone knew where they could find Johnny.

Possibly the biggest high school football fan in Texas, Johnny liked to find the best game of the week, he knew all the stats, but he loved his Yoakum Bulldogs. Having followed the team for decades, he could be found most Friday evenings prior to the game giving pep talks to the boys of the fall. As his own grandsons grew up and became Cuero Gobblers, he learned to love the Gobblers as well. Johnny and Wanda never missed a football or baseball game of their six grandsons, with the exception of his cancer treatment days, and even then would try to make it back to watch.

Johnny worked with his wife, daughters and team he absolutely loved at The Woodhouse Spas corporation for the past 13 years as CFO (affectionately known as “Chief Figure Outer”). He touched the lives of people across the country with his gentle kindness, humility and deep insight and wisdom.

A true Father Figure to so many people he’s touched and when you distill the essence of his story, it is that of a humble servant of Christ Jesus. A life of priority and purpose, simple, but never easy. He was always grateful.

John did what he loved. He lived passionately. He surrounded himself with the people he loved. He gave generously, never expecting a return, nor of himself. We plan to honor this legacy, knowing it will continue on through the lives he touched, through his children, and grandsons.

Johnny is survived by his wife Wanda Carroll Bishop; daughters, Beth Ohrt (Toby) of Cuero and Jeni Garrett (Derrick) of Cuero and son, Brent Bishop (Jenn) of Cuero and grandchildren, Dustin & Tanner Ohrt, Cooper & Cody Bishop, Eli & Ethan Garrett, his brother Roger Bishop (Diane) of Ezzell.

He was preceded in death by his son Brad Bishop, parents and brother Tommy.

Visitation will held at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home, from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 and the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Jordan Moore and Kenny Smith will be officiating. Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery.
