From the Braozosport Facts

After an outstanding run at the Class 4A state championship, the Sweeny Bulldogs placed quite a few players on the District 26-4A all-district baseball list.

Brazosport and Columbia also had their fair share of award winners.

The Sweeny Bulldogs won the district championship, posting a 9-1 district record and were 35-6 overall, losing out in the state championship contest to Argyle (5-0).

Bulldog junior Caden Homniok was voted most valuable player of the year. Teammates joining him with superlative honors were junior Wes Folse, who was voted defensive player of the year; Jackson Kiddy, who was named pitcher of the year; and head coach Mark Durham, who was coach of the year.

Also with an individual award was Brazosport sophomore Tanner Quick, who was named the newcomer of the year.

The Exporters finished 4-6 in district play and 15-12 overall for the season, bowing out to Bellville (6-2, 3-2) in the bidistrict round.

Columbia senior Tyler Russell was voted utility player of the year. As for the Roughnecks, they finished 7-3, which was good for second place in the district standings and 14-14 overall. The Roughnecks got to the area round, losing out to Wimberley (2-1, 12-0).

The final individual award went to El Campo’s Zach Leo, who was voted the offensive player of the year.

All of the award winners were selected by district coaches.

First-team performers for Sweeny were pitcher Ty Ringo, infielder Jaden Bohlar and outfielders Blake Benavides and Quinton Martin.

Columbia pitcher Jordan Salazar, infielder Michael Carlson and outfielder Jarrett Brown all made the first team.

Also making first team was Brazosport pitcher Garrett Naquin.

The rest of the first-teamers were El Campo’s Taylor Vaclavick, Reed Spenrath, Clay Jung, Blaine Bullard and Lynn Osina; and Bay City’s Alec Smith.

On the second team were Sweeny’s Nathan Nance; Brazosport’s Carlos Moreno and Josh Luna; Columbia’s Jack Russell; Bay City’s Reggie DeLeon and Bryce Quinn; El Campo’s Tate Fuechee; and Wharton’s Jacob Palacios.

Honorable mentions went to Brazosport’s JoJo Martinez, Draven Saldivar and Christian Guevara; Columbia’s Nick Cardwell; and Sweeny’s Joe Effenberger, Cord Filipp and Mark Schumann.
