Justin Thomas(JT) nearly holes out his approach shot onto the 8th green. Now Tiger at bat.....he puts one in there too about 5 feet right of the hole. DJ on deck now.....only 105 to the hole. His hits and falls into the leftside bunker. Dufner's putt is actually about 5 feet and he sneaks it in to take the lead at 2 under.

Holy Cowabunga!!! DJ chips it in for birdie from the bunker.....like a magician. Now he's tied with Dufner for the lead.

Tiger misses his 7 footer and pars. Now JT's turn for birdie. He's about 4 feet away. He misses too and stays at +1. Tiger stays at +3.

Tiger can't miss those under-10-footers if he wants to win. Shinnecock isn't gonna gift too many of those to begin with.

Sergio hits it over the green on #10 and double bogies the hole.....the same as Russell Henley did earlier to drop out of the lead.

The truth is that Justin Thomas is really playing well today, just not making some putts like DJ has. But DJ has a 3-stroke lead on Thomas and tied with Dufner at -2. Thomas has had his chances.....just has not converted those opportunities.....yet.

It's a big boost in confidence when you hole-out a birdie from the greenside bunker.....especially to go back into a tie for the lead in the US OPEN in the first round. Dufner misses a short putt for par and falls out of a tie with DJ now.

Uh-Oh.....DJ airmails it over the green on his approach to #9. He hit that ball too high and the wind got it. Tiger's shot stays on the green toward the back.
