    Default Gainesville(3-3, 1-0) @ Argyle(6-0, 1-0)

Argyle gets another home game this week against the Gainesville Leopards. Gainesville defeated Burkburnett last week 46-21 to notch a district win. They will be fighting for a playoff spot this season against Sanger now.......I think both Hirschi and Decatur will be the other teams that get in. Looks like Gainesville may be one of those teams that continue to improve as the season progresses. They have a solid core offensively just looking at the film clips and studying the stats. It would be a major accomplishment to keep Argyle from scoring at least 45 points against them this week, however. I'm fairly certain their defense is their achilles' heel and needs more seasoning.

Gainesville has a big 'ol boy at quarterback.....#7 Draylon Franklin(6-3, 225) is a junior this season and can throw that football pretty darn good. He's very accurate and has a very strong arm.....and I did notice he throws on the run accurately too. He really doesn't tuck it and run much, even though he has great size.....he prefers to throw it at all costs. His two main receivers are #4 Josh Kemp(6-0, 175), a senior that can play all the skill positions and is the back-up qb if needed. He has great speed and has a knack for getting open. He runs back punts and kickoffs as well.....he has great hands. The other main target is #25 Calion Baker(5-9, 160) a senior running back. These two have combined for most of the receiving yardage for the season.....505 yds for Baker and 485 yds. for Kemp. Franklin has thrown for 1204 yds in 6 games this season. Baker has lots of speed and excellent moves at running back.....he hits the hole very quickly and can beat the defenders to the edge. Once he's in the open field, he's like a cat with his cuts and slashes. He has great hands to catch the football on the run, and then the speed and moves to do something after the catch.....that's why he's a main target.

Gainesville has rushed for 1665 yds. in 6 games this season.....that's an impressive total for an average of 277.5 yds/game. They are averaging 200.7 yds/game in the passing game. With all of these big numbers.....they have only managed to score 36.5 pts./game. Calion Baker has rushed for an impressive 917 yds in 6 games, and Soph. #32 Brandon Baker(brothers perhaps?) has rushed for 645 yds in 6 games. As you can see, the Baker Boyz have accounted for over 1550 rushing yards of the 1665 total for the Leopards. There is one more main weapon for the Leopards this season......their kicker. #10 Ivan Franco(5-11, 170) has a good leg. He's a senior and does all the kicking.....the kickoffs, punts, and field goals. Last week against Burkburnett he made a 40 yarder and a 41 yarder.....MaxPreps stats says his longest this season is 43 yds. His longest punt is 77 yds.....must have been wind-aided. He's a left-footed kicker, and has very good form.....so he's very dependable and a weapon for sure.

Here's Argyle's current numbers thru 6 games according to stats entered for MaxPreps:

Total Rushing Yards....1186 for an average of 197.7/game
Total Passing Yards.....1721 for an average of 285.7/game
Total Points Scored.....306 for an average of 51 pts/game
Total Points Allowed......90 for an average of 15 pts/game

Remember Gainesville's numbers this season??? 277.5/game passing and 200.7/game rushing. But only 36.5 pts/game scored, AND 35 pts/game allowed!! We now see the problem, Houston. You could almost flip-flop the rushing and passing totals with Argyle.....the total yardage is very close in 6 games for both teams. Maybe Argyle did most of their scoring in 3 quarters for most of the games, but still the offensive total yards is close. Argyle scored a whole lot more points for just a little more total yards/game, and allowed a whole lot less points/game.

I'm going to need to see more evidence before I make a pick in this one.

LOL, d0tc0m......looks like 15 pts. is the difference, Huh? Do you really believe the stats tell the whole story? Heck No.....but at least Gainesville does have a valid offensive attack. Perhaps their competition has not been as stout either......so add another 14 points for that. Now you're looking at a difference of 29 points.....would you take that bet???

Did I forget to mention their O-line averages over 255 lbs across the front??? Maybe that's why Gainesville's offense has such good numbers, Huh?

When are mid-season grades coming out. Gainesville always loses players to grades at mid-season due to grades.

I'm not so certain Argyle will be able to stop Calion Baker from scoring a few TD's......he looks like a real threat to me. And that big qb Franklin is pretty darn accurate and has a big arm to get it deep to those speedy receivers of theirs......so Gainesville might be blowing that horn a few more times than most people think. Argyle's ace in the hole is our defense and our offense are better than theirs......if we don't turn the ball over 3-4 times and play ridiculously sloppy on both sides of the ball. Still.....it's a football game of high school teenagers and anything can happen under the Friday Night Lights......they do know how to win football games, too. It is my hope that the Eagles will continue to improve their skills and play with each game to get this team to the Semifinals. There's plenty of competition out there on the road to Arlington......it ain't gonna be smooth sailing, for sure.

Decatur managed just 21 points on Argyle. Decatur's offense has been just as explosive as Gainesville's, and against slightly better competition. Gainesville is athletic enough that they may break a couple of long scoring plays on a missed tackle or a blown assignment, but they won't have a ton of sustained success against Argyle. The Eagles need to just jump as far ahead as they can as quick as they can, put the game out of reach early, then get the starters out and keep them healthy.

Looks like the running back didn't play against Van Alstyne, so those numbers are actually in 5 games, not 6 (for what its worth).
