Default District 29-5A (11 team distict)

Got this article from earlier today from the Caller Times:

AUSTIN — Alice and Calallen were unanimously granted membership in District 30-5A during the University Interscholastic League District Realignment Committee appeals hearing on Thursday at the UIL office.

The granted appeal means that District 30-5A will consist of the six Corpus Christi ISD schools, along with Alice, Calallen, Flour Bluff, Gregory-Portland and Tuloso-Midway.

UIL deputy athletic director Jamey Harrison said that the league was left in a tough spot with 11 schools around Corpus Christi for realignment, and decided to "err on what was appealable." Harrison said they created the districts knowing there would be the possibility of the appeal and allow the appeals committee to hear it.

Also in the hearing, UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt added by rule and precedent the league could not create an 11-team district. He said it has been nearly 30 years since it has been done.

The size of the district is rare, but the travel issues that Calallen superintendent Artie Almendarez and Alice superintendent Grace Everett stated in their appeals will no longer be an issue.

Calallen athletic director Phil Danaher said after the meeting they were going to begin the work of scheduling games in all sports for an 11-team district as soon as possible.

Local news reported that having 2 zones in this district would be considered. Each team would play everybody in their zone plus some of the teams in the other zone. The top 2 teams from each zone would make the playoffs.
