’Necks looking to keep streak alive

    By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Thursday, October 8, 2015 2:00 am

No strangers on the gridiron, Brazosport and Columbia renew their rivalry in the 43rd consecutive meeting to open District 28-4A play Friday.

Columbia (5-0) and the Exporters (1-4) will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. at Griggs Field with the Roughnecks riding a four-game winning streak — including last year’s 51-13 drubbing.

“It is a difficult matchup, and every time we’ve played its been at the beginning of the year or beginning of district, so it is always, ‘expect the unexpected,’” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “We’ve both had a week off and they are very talented over there so it should be a good game.”

The five straight wins to start the season for the Roughnecks have answered some of their preseason questions.

“We are still looking for answers in some spots and will still play a lot of our kids, but offensively we will run the football like we’ve always done,” Lynch said. “Defensively, because of injuries, we will still rotate a bunch of kids in and out, but everything starts anew now and I’ve been emphasizing that for the past couple of weeks to our kids.

“Our defense has played well but I still think they can play better. Bottom line is to make sure we have more points on the scoreboard than the other team does.”

Columbia’s defense has been stingy, allowing just 204.2 yards. It has only given up 77 points this season to go with 1,021 total yards — 661 rushing and 360 passing. It also has recovered six fumbles and have one interception this season.

“They are just not giving up many yards and not giving up many points,” Brazosport coach Ben Rudolph said. “They are just a good football program that you really can’t find too many chinks in their armor. They are undefeated for a reason.”

Offensively, the Roughnecks also have made some changes. One of the big pieces to come in — and is still somewhat of a work in progress — is junior quarterback Josh Jimenez (15-for-27, 354 passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception).

But Roark said there is still some competition at the position.

“We are still going to rotate at quarterback, (Hunter) Grayson had to play so much defense in some of the games and is a starter on defense, but I’d like to get him back in the rotation now that he is fully healthy,” Lynch said. “There are a lot of good things he does for us and Josh does some good things as well.”

Senior running back Dakarius Bell (100 carries, 742 yards, 13 TDs) has some company this year in the back field with Keithan Taylor (24-357, three TDs) and Saylaion Dunlap (32-271, three TDs).

“Part of our offense is a running back by committee type of thing, so we will continue to rotate those wing backs back there,” Lynch said.

Despite getting only one win in nondistrict action, the Exporters have some weapons on both sides of the ball.

After a tough nondistrict schedule, Brazosport is ready for the challenge Columbia presents.

“The off-week came at a good time for us to get back healthy again,” Rudolph said. “It also gave the kids some time to spend on their school work with the first six weeks ending last Friday. It gave us time to recollect and get back to basics and work on fundamentals.”

The Exporters have been outscored 189-108 this season and are averaging 268 yards of offense while giving up 371.4 yards. But Brazosport played some programs that, at times, were double their size — not only in numbers but in weight as well.

“One thing we found out about our team is that they never quit, which is fun to watch and fun to be a part of. Even in games that were out of reach in the second half, we never gave up on the game or our effort,” Rudolph said.

Rudolph said sophomore quarterback Jarvis Davis (33-for-77, 589 yards, four TDs, two interceptions) has solidified the position.

“He’s been thrown into the fire in some of those nondistrict games and he’s handled the pressures of it very well,” Rudolph said. “He continues to get better and works at his craft.”

Another weapon the Ships have come to rely on is senior running back Jeremiah Credit (55-377, five TDs), who’s become a highlight reel when it comes to kickoff and punt returns.

“He is just an amazing ball carrier whether he’s getting an interception or returning a kickoff or if we are just handing it to him in the backfield,” Rudolph said of his speedy all-purpose player. “We’ve also found some bright spots in the defensive line with Antonio Williams as a defensive tackle and (Ja’Quavious) Dean has done a great job as a defensive end.”

The one place where the Exporters lost a lot of experience this season was on the offensive line. But after five nondistrict games, they’ve turned into another good unit.

“(Columbia’s) defense line is as talented as what we’ve faced already in nondistrict, but then again, we have some good defenses in our district,” Rudolph said. “But so far our offensive line has handled some moving positions to get them set and some have also handled their first varsity taste. I feel good about them heading into Friday.”

Brazosport leads the all-time series, 40-20-1.

This game will be broadcast both on www.brazosportisd.net and legacysportsnetwork.com.
