    Default Hallettsville(4-2) @ Goliad(5-1): Who ya got?

This game will most probably decide the 3A-D1 district championship, but it is only the first district game for both clubs. Four of the five teams in this district will make the playoffs, but this particular game has a special meaning attached to it. Hallettsville had Nate Kowalik as their qb last season, but now he is the qb for the Goliad Tigers, a district rival. Kowalik's dad took over as the principal of GHS this summer, and the family moved to Goliad. Last season with the Brahmas Kowalik threw 41 TD passes as a junior. He has brought his talents to Goliad this season, and so far has enjoyed a similar success with the Tigers. Last season Hallettsville went 13-1, but did not play Goliad(7-5). This season they are both in the same district, and this is sort of a "grudge" match....strictly due to the transfer of Kowalik. Each team has something to "prove" to the other. Hallettsville wants to prove its dominance despite the loss of Kowalik this season, and Goliad wants to prove that Kowalik will help carry the Tigers to a district championship and beyond this season. Getting a win this week is top priority to both of these teams. Who ya got?

Let's take a look at both teams so far this season:
Goliad averages a little more than 46 pts/gm so far this seaon and is giving up 12. Their only loss was to Shiner(5-0) 35-29 in Week 3. Shiner is ranked 7th in the Class 2A-1 AP poll this week. Goliad's wins were against Victoria St. Joe(52-0), Odem(47-7), Ganado(47-12), Vanderbilt Industrial(47-0), and last week previously unbeaten Tidehaven(56-20).
Hallettsville is averaging right at 37 pts/gm and giving up right at 20/gm...but not recently. They dropped their first two games of the season to Columbia(31-20) and to Yoakum(34-21), but both Columbia(5-0) and Yoakum(4-2) are 4A schools with very good teams. Since then the Brahmas have reeled off impressive wins against 4A Taylor(26-14), Edna(36-12), Luling(61-15), and last week 4A Columbus(57-12). Looks like Hallettsville has found their new qb for this season, senior rb/lb Brent Motal.

To summarize....it appears Hallettsville has played the more competitive schedule and is now rolling along as expected with Motal at the helm. Goliad is a surprise "dark horse" that has emerged with the help of star qb Kowalik leading the Tigers. Looks like the defenses for both teams will have to make some stops, and the offenses will definitely be scoring. Since Goliad is my alma mater from the early 70's, I'm rooting

for the Tigers to take down the Brahmas this week. If it's only by one point, that's all that counts. I think this game is one to keep an eye on. It's the Class 3A DQ Game of the Week. Go Tigers!!!

My brother says the DQ Game of the Week is a one-game weekly affair for ALL classifications....not one in each classification. So this is a big deal for Goliad and Hallettsville. The TEXAS STOP SIGN stops in Goliad Friday night at Tiger Stadium. My brother's son lives in Goliad County, so he's thinking about going to this game. We're both alums that played for Goliad back in the early 70's(when they were winning yearly). On this day 42 years ago I was a senior in high school and turned 18. It was like yesterday. GO TIGERS.

Yes, they seem to have their offense rolling now with their new qb Motal, and the defense has been there to take up the slack in the interim period of the adjustment. They have recently really been putting up the points. Not sure Goliad's D can stop them, but did a good job against a decent Odem team earlier and are improving. Kowalik and Co. will need to literally outscore the Brahmas to win, and if the Tiger D can get some crucial stops this game may be a barnburner to the end.

I was most certainly wrong here. Huge win for Goliad. These are probably the two best teams in the region and I see them playing again in the quarterfinals.
