U.S. Presidents Born in Virginia and Ohio

They total 15 (8 from Virginia and 7 from Ohio) which is just over 1/3 of our presidents.

The ones from Virginia are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachery Taylor and Wookdrow Wilson. It has 96 years since a Virginian has been elected. Ironically when he passed away Virginian William Henry Harrison was succeeded by the Vice President, John Tyler, who was also from Virginia.


Ohio is often called the Mother of Presidents but it tails Virginia by 1. They are Ulysses Simpson Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison (William Henry Harrison's grandson), William McKinley, William H. Taft and Warren G. Harding. Some list Ohio as being William Henry Harrison's state but even though he moved to Ohio as a young man he was born in Virginia. Plus many historians consider Harding and Grant's presidential years as failures so they may not be much to brag on.

There have been two native born Texans in the White House as president. One is Dwight D. Eisenhower who was born here but he and his family moved to Abilene, Kansas when he was about 2 years old and he considered this his home. Another one is of course Lyndon B. Johnsons. The two President Bushes were not born in Texas but resided here for many years and one was even elected governor of Texas.
