USC and Notre Dame claim their "Junior League of America Poll" wins in their championship totals. In all seriousness, I have never really known what to think of the '70 "Championship" I tend to count it but don't have my heels dug in and might be persuaded to leave it out.

If Celina can claim 8 we Texas fans can claim 1970!

I can understand your point and this was one year then that would have justified a real playoff. Basically the top three teams were Texas, Notre Dame and Ohio State and they switched around depending who played the best on a particular weekend.
The AP voted for Nebraska(who backed into it with a 9-0-1) record by beating LSU
17 to 12 in the Orange Bowl even though earlier in the season they had tied a 6-4-1 USC team at 21 all. Notre Dame was a contender until they lost to the same USCC team 28 to 38. Ohio State won all their regular season games until a 9-3 Stanford beat them 27 to 17 in the Rose Bowl. Texas also had a perfect record but lost to Notre Dame 24 to 11 in the Cotton Bowl with all the points scored in the first half. I always feel if we would have scored a td in the third quarter we could have pulled it off and we had chances. ND keyed on Worster and we should have stopped giving him the ball after his second of six fumbles (in which we lost on 5 and two of these stopped a promising drive and one set up and ND td. We were killing them on QB options and should have stuck with it but I guess it is hard to change what has been successful. Also we were hurt when we lost our great receiver during the season - Cotton Speyer. With him I think we could have completed some critical passes. Still no one had a perfect record. Too bad the BCS was not in effect or it would have been UT vs Ohio State in the championship game.

The UPI awarded us the NC based on our perfect record during the regular season. One reason was that we beat a perfect record Arkansas in the last game of the regular season 42 to 7. The UPI recognized us for the perfect record during the regular season. One has to remember that this time was close to the area where Bowl Games were considered exhibition games. It was felt due to the lapse of time between the bowl games and the regular season that the teams were rusty and not at their best since most teams ended the regular season in November and a few the first week of December.

A lot of arguments for all teams but without a playoff or even BCS that year we can argue several ways and I for one have no problem including claiming the 1970 NC. We were as good a choice as any among Nebraska, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Right you are and what I should have wrote is that Men have won 22 in their sports and the Women have won 26 in their sports for a total of 48 National Championships for UT.

To me one glaring sport we have failed to win at least one NC is Men's Basketball.
