View Full Version : District Race Overview and Playoff Projections after Week 8

WOS87
10-24-2009, 01:34 PM
The projected finishes are primarily based on who's beaten who so far head-to-head. In the case of districts where there are teams that don't have an obvious direct connection of wins and losses to rank them, I used the district power rating which is calculated using the same algorithm I used in my statewide 3A ratings the past 3 years

The number in parentheses is the power rating calculated solely on district games played. All power ratings combined for a district should add up to zero

The difference between power ratings for two teams can be extrapolated as a predicted margin of victory or loss based on prior district game results.

man i'm glad i don't have to pay you for what that work is worth, thanks so much......

just checking that i'm reading your strength numbers right, are your numbers showing that a possible latter matchup between coldspring and caldwell would have us as a favorite? if so it would explain why you have been saying to swap rankings with us and cleveland......

No, the numbers are only valid in comparing teams within the same district. I did statewide ratings the last couple of years but have been WAY too busy to do it again this year.

So how much does Cuero have to beat Gonzales by in order to have any hope of staying on the field with Edna? :D

Argue with the numbers, not me. I've said the same thing to the Jasper fans. I always have the same usual disclaimer at the beginning of every statistical thread I post.

Edna has matched Cuero in their performances against both Yoakum and Palacios numbers-wise, therefore, I wouldn't automatically overlook them if I were a Cuero follower (which I actually am)... That's the only conclusion I personally would make from the numbers I posted above.

I'm all for objective stats... there are already WAY too many subjective rankings in high school football (the 3ADL rankings, the AP poll, the DCTF rankings, etc.) and I think seeing both helps.

Do I base my personal opinion on either 100%? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Do any of them determine who actually gets the state title at the end of the season? Nope (at least in the high school ranks)

IMO the problem with the BCS in the NCAA has always been that it tries to combine the two in an objective way which is pretty much impossible and quite frankly contradictory.

Do I personally think Cuero is the favorite in the game vs Edna? YES. But it's comments like the one quoted above that leave you open to getting VERY burned if Edna actually wins!

...and in the long run does it really matter? Cuero is looking to be a shoe-in for the D1 district playoff slot and Edna the D2 district champ playoff slot no matter who wins the head-to-head. :D

I take it you dont have a factor to plug in for a team that has won 32 in a row at home? And Edna will be comming to Cuero.

All streaks come to an end eventually... WO-S learned that this year after their 32 consecutive district game winning streak came to an end....

And in all seriousness, did I NOT just say in the post you quoted yourself that I predict Cuero to win?! (unfortunately the numbers from my statistics do not). Feel free to post your own objective stats showing how things "should" play out, this is an open forum.

I was just jacking around. You people know me better than that. The other thing people from Cuero know is that no one is taken lightly. We have seen Kam Jones for a few years now. His former head coach is actually in Cuero. He loves the kid. A player like Kam can win it for you single handedly. I would not be surprised if that game was less than a touchdown either way. Whoever wins, Edna will do well in the playoffs.

I was jacking around but it was a little bit serious too. What margin of victory throws the poll back Cuero's way. Numerically speaking.

Well...
Cuero beat Goliad by 28
Edna beat Gonzales by 40

Edna's playing Goliad this week and Cuero's playing Gonzales....

To make the numbers switch in Cuero's favor Cuero would have to do at least a couple of points better in their spread against Gonzales (which is currently 39 points) than Edna does in their spread against Goliad (which is currently 33 points).

The Yoakum-Palacios game will also factor in. Each and every game factors in to how the numbers crunch out...

Keep in mind Crabman that the numbers he has to work with are from two teams that play much different pre distric schedules. Also as we all know Reeves will never score more than he has to in any game

The numbers are calculated using ONLY district games so non-district schedules, records and results are not a factor whatsoever

WOS you do a great job with numbers.
But these numbers you use to try and help predict games have nothing to do with how teams matchup.

I had over an 80% accuracy in predicting the outcome of games last year using the same system so I beg to differ. They may not work well when there are teams that matchup differently and the numbers are close and I acknowledge that (JUST like Edna vs Cuero) but if there's more than a 2 TD difference in rating the accuracy is well above 90%

...and Gobblers (as well as the Jasper Bulldogs), I hope you come out and prove the numbers wrong! Good luck to both of you! :)

Seriously guys and gals, this is just meant to be used as a tool... NOT to knock any particular team, NOT to be read as Gospel and for the nth time I will state that these projections are by no means what my own personal opinion is. It's just statistics! Chill!

I promise you every single one of the numbers will change after this Friday.

If you really want me to post a playoff projection based on opinion I could easily do it (as could any of you) but I'd get the same complaints (as would you) with even less ammunition to back up my argument.

Statistical numbers should be considered and are a good way to show probable outcomes. And to back this up, teams have power ratings for a reason and it holds true the majority of the time. But, on the flip side, some subjectives could hold true especially in high school sports due to emotions. Sometimes the will to win overpowers talent level. This is why teams show up and play the game. To prove to themselves, to the program, to their community, and for the simple reason... the will to win. Never overlook the underdog. They get hungry too.

Great job as always WOS87!

I'll see if I can find my old system for ratings. I'll pm you my formula. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in about 8 years.

Guess I missed all the Jasper complaints.

Statics are just one aspect of making accurate predictions. A share of fundamental analysis is also needed. Not all teams keep scoring once the game is in hand, some teams play stellar defense and don't put up a lot of points.

Jasper very easily handled Rusk. On paper is should have been a good game since Rusk played Carthage close.

The old saying "any given Friday" is the x-factor in every game that can't be computed or analyzed.

What Jasper complaints? I did not see any, not from Jasper fans. I think most Jasper fans have pretty much learned to let their play on the field speak for itself. For better, or for worse.

About statistics. The only statistic that matters (usually) is did you win the game. Unless tie breakers enter the picture, a one point victory is as good as 100. What is that old saying? Winners say play ball. Losers talk about statistics. Something like that.
