Sinton football keeps finding ways to win

Pirates have battled their way to 7-0 start, District 31-3A lead

SINTON — Sinton football coach Tom Allen thought the Pirates had used up all their luck when they rallied for a victory over Mathis two weeks ago.

After holding off Robstown in double overtime last Friday, it might not have anything to do with luck.

“We just don’t give up,” senior quarterback Josh Harrison said. “It doesn’t matter how much time is left on the clock or how much we’re down by, we just fight until the end. I know we’ve had some nail biters, but that’s just the kind of team we have.”

As a result, Sinton remains undefeated at 4-0 in District 31-3A and 7-0 overall. Allen is well aware, however, that the Pirates easily could be at the bottom of the standings instead of perched at the top.

Sinton opened district against Orange Grove and scored in the fourth quarter to slip past the Bulldogs 28-21. The Pirates then routed Aransas Pass 59-24 before running into an upset-minded Mathis team.

Trailing by 25 points, Harrison threw four touchdown passes in the last quarter and a half to help lift Sinton to a 33-28 victory. If the Pirates didn’t get their fill of eleventh-hour antics against Mathis, they did against Robstown.

The Pirates and Cotton Pickers went back and forth the entire game and were unable to settle things in regulation. It took two tries in overtime, but Sinton eventually escaped with a 45-44 triumph.

Harrison said it didn’t have to be that way and the Pirates are working on avoiding the same scenario with only three games left in the regular season.

“We had some chances to get a bigger lead at first, but we didn’t capitalize,” Harrison said. “They made some good plays and we ended up in a dogfight. We shouldn’t have made so many mistakes and have some things we need to get fixed. If we can I think we should be in good shape.”

There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the passing game.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Harrison leads South Texas with 1,914 yards and 26 touchdowns. He is 121 of 194 for a completion percentage of 62 percent and has been intercepted only six times.

Harrison ranks second on the team with 211 yards rushing and first with five touchdowns, but by now it’s quite obvious that Sinton is going to put the ball in the air more than keep it on the ground.

Allen said it all begins with Harrison.

“Josh just fits great into our system,” Allen said. “He’s a tall QB with a big arm and has done a fantastic job. He works his tail off and has made some great adjustments. We know he’s going to be successful because that’s the kind of kid he is. He has to be because we’re throwing the ball all over the field. Who ever thought we’d attempt 62 passes in a game?”

Sinton did against the Cotton Pickers, with Harrison completing 36 of them for 419 yards and three touchdowns. The Pirates are hardly a one-man team, though.

Jeremiah Acosta and DeRick Castro have combined to rush for 439 yards and three touchdowns. When Harrison is handing off the ball to Acosta and Castro, he’s throwing it to a corps of receivers that includes Ramsey Rivera, Shane Segovia, Jeremy Laws, Mark Gaitan and Anthony Banda.

Riviera has 31 catches for 446 yards and five touchdowns and Segovia 18 catches for 398 yards and eight scores. Laws is right behind with 14 catches for 381 yards and three touchdowns, while Gaitan has 15 catches for 197 yards and Banda 13 catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Without them, Harrison isn’t sure how the season might be going.

“It really helps to have guys like we do,” Harrison said. “The line and receivers, we all work together. I’m just lucky to be around these guys. It’s not just me. Everybody plays a part. It feels great being part of a program like this.”

That's a nice article on Josh & the Pirates. He is a really good kid, even if he is a Giants fan. :D :D :D
