Great article about a great coach , but I did find one mistake

"There may be more coaches out there with more wins than Hooks, but no active coach with more than 100 wins can top his winning percentage of .797. Hooks has a career record of 261-65-2."


There is a coach in Gilmer ,who does not have longlevity of Coach Hooks but the article states "no active coach with more than 100 wins can top his winning percentage of .797"

Coach Traylor has a record of 104-17-0 with a winning percentage of .859 .

Dan Hooks the person - not so much

I spent way too many games listening to him not only cuss the refs but also cuss the players. No way I would want him to represent my school...no matter what his win percentage is.

Take a look at a guy named Curtis Barbay, this is his 35th year at Newton.
15 CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASONS

No doubt Barbay has been a great coach for a very long time. One of the greats and all at one school.:)

yes I think its awesome there's still some classy old school coaches out there. He's also won 3 state titles

You know, when I first read this, I wanted to come hard at you for saying that about a man you obviously don't know a dang thing about. Instead, I'm going to play it cool and just say that you are DEAD WRONG about Dan. He is a BETTER person than he is a coach. He might be a little rough around the edges and may have hurt your wittle feelings on the field. But he has molded many young boys (often troubled) into men. I am one of them. I do take exception to your comments. He is a mentor for the young men he coaches and would go above and beyond for them. I'm not going to say he never "cussed", but he got his point across. I WILL say that he NEVER spoke to us or ANY player in a demeaning way, nor did he ever talk down to us.

Your post wreaks of either hate toward him because of what has happened over the years to your team or is just a straight up guess of what he is like just because he will give the refs hell now and then. Either way, you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! And he deserves all of the recognition he is getting.

yeah you know it did surprise me when I read that. glad to hear from someone who actually played for the man. Not from around there, so didn't know a whole lot about him. Was astounded at how long he had been there. Its difficult now a days to find a coach thats been around for even more than 10 years, but 28 wow thats an accomplishment.
