I always wondered---Do high school players get to pick their no., or is it assigned? And is the position/no. convention the same in highschool as it is in college and the pros?

When I played all the kids got to pick their numbers as long as it was in the position number (WR'S a low number or in the 80's; LB's in the 40-50 range lineman 60-70 and in 90 range) as long as that number was vacant.

We picked them in middle school and then those numbers were assigned as closely as possible as we moved up to varsity.. If you didn't like your number, you could always try to switch during 2-a-days though

When I played my number (84) was taken by a senior so I had to settle for 83.:( I imagine that is how it is in most schools...uperclassmen get first choice.

College players seldom get to pick their numbers. Maybe a "special" few but most are assigned numbers by positions.

In high school the younger players get assigned numbers. They can switch as they progress up in class but most sitck with what they were initially given.

Upperclassmen should get first choice, but if they don't actually see the playing field, should they still get first choice over say a sophmore badass?

I was a manager junior year and trainer senior year-lucky to get a letterman's jacket

wore football garb during practices-coaches made me wear shirt and tie at games-this was in early 70s

my senior year (last year) seniors got first pick, but if two sr's wanted the same number, starters get first pick. never really ran into the upper classmen vs lower classmen number battle

If I were a coach I don't think I'd want to let anyone have #1.

I think the coaches will let the players pick in order of class. (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores...) The only rule I have heard of is linemen and LBs can only pick above 50 unless they play on both sides of the ball.

Yes. They have been on the team helping them get better and dedicating all that time for at least a year while that sophomore was still learning the ropes as a fish. The hard working senior deserves the number he wants more than the hot shot young guy who still has 3 more years to play IMO.

I'd backpedal a *little* bit to say that if I let someone have it (I think it can be an ego thing which has little place in a team game, IMO), it would be because they earned it, perhaps through prior seasons and all the work they put in before the season starts.
