View Full Version : District Race Overview and Playoff Projections after Week 7

WOS87
10-17-2009, 06:03 PM
The projected finishes are primarily based on who's beaten who so far head-to-head. In the case of districts where there are teams that don't have an obvious direct connection of wins and losses to rank them, I used the district power rating which is calculated using the same algorithm I used in my statewide 3A ratings the past 3 years

The number in parentheses is the power rating calculated solely on district games played. All power ratings combined for a district should add up to zero

The difference between power ratings for two teams can be extrapolated as a predicted margin of victory or loss based on prior district game results.

I'll add in the subsequent districts as I finish them. They're going pretty quickly actually.

The projected finishes are based on who's beaten who so far head-to-head. If there are teams that don't have a direct connection and have the same records then I use the district power rating which is the number in parentheses.

Here are the first (meaning VERY preliminary) WOS87 PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS for the year

fantastic work.....

something interesting on 22 3a, should huffman sneak in as the third team, coldspring wins over cleveland and 21 3a stays as you expect, that would have cleveland playing wo-s in the first round.....i'd pay to see that one....

Statewide projections are now complete!! It's been quite a while since I've hit the max number of characters allowed on a post. I had to prune off a few words here and there to make it all fit.

Please let me know if you notice an error in margins of victory listed and I will correct them.

This week will tell the tale when Carthage visits Jasper. I cannot vision right now how Jasper will be held out of the playoffs. They are much better than when they met Gilmer at SFA in Week 0. In Gilmer's district, Chapel Hill could still get in if they win out, knocking Tatum out of the playoffs, assuming Gilmer beats Tatum in week 10. We may still see the first round with Gilmer/Carthage squaring off, but in D2.

I will be shocked as well if Jasper doesn't make the playoffs but I had to be consistent in my projections and keep my personal bias out of it. Center played Diboll much tougher than Jasper, and Rusk played Carthage quite close in addition to beating Huntington worse than Jasper which is why they both ended up ahead. This week should tell the tale.

The story so far:
Edna beat Gonzales by 40
Edna beat Yoakum by 6
Cuero beat Palacios by 30
Cuero beat Yoakum by 3
Palacios beat Goliad by 7
Goliad beat Gonzales by 6

Judging solely on the past 2 weeks, I have Edna over Cuero by 1 point

Projected finish:
1. Edna (18.8)
2. Cuero (17.8) - D1
3. Yoakum (13.8)
4. Palacios (-11.2)
5. Goliad (-17.2)
6. Gonzales (-22.2)

I understand you want to try and use logic, but why the disclaimer? I'm not very smart but I can read and I can see your using the last 2 games. If you want to rank Cuero ahead, go on and do it. Or use the logic, but why justify? I'm not seeing you do that with every other district.

So, he put a little disclaimer so all the Cuero guys/gals wouldn't ask... only to have the lone Edna dude ask.

The Cuero peeps I know can read also.
As far as being the lone Edna dude, well if that's the criteria then what even bother with the exercise? I still don't get why one would go thru all the trouble of developing a system for rating, and then apologize for the results.

Its a projection dont get all bent ... hell I want Edna to be the favorite when they come to our house with the DC at stake. WOS87 is the man when it comes to number crunching . :D

Until you do your own projections dont gripe and moan when someone else does .

Oh c'mon. No way in this world Edna is the favorite, you know it, I know it. But why do it if your going to justify the numbers you don't like?
Because of the way the BCS uses computers you've got all these guys and all these sites trying to come up with the latest, greatest, method. But then. when it doesn't make sense, like putting Edna ahead of Cuero, you throw logic aside. This isn't about Edna/Cuero, its why bother if you can't live with the outcome.

Dude, chill! I said at the very beginning that these are VERY preliminary and are likely to change immensely over the next three weeks. I took the disclaimers off. Sorry if it offended you...

In regards to Edna, the Cuero-Edna matchup is looking to not really be a factor in how the playoffs will turn out as even if Cuero beats Edna, Edna should still be the favorite to get the District Champ playoff spot in D2 (with Yoakum the favorite to get the Runnerup spot) as Cuero will likely go D1 unless Gonzales can make a major resurgence in the next 3 weeks.

Please let me know if you notice an error in margins of victory listed and I will correct them.
What do you do in your spare time? Man that's a lot of GREAT info.!!!

and just so its out there before tonight, i have no personal idea on the outcome of caldwell/rockdale, but wos87's point spread for that game is bigger than most i've seen....since it's unopinioned, i'm really interested to see how "on the money" the prediction ends up being....
