Gilmer Buckeye

Glad you asked. Gilmer is 20 miles northwest of Longiew and 35 miles northeast of Tyler.

We have won two district championships in a row in different districts. We haven't lost a district game since 2000. In 2001 we were in Daingerfield's district and in 2002 our closest competitor was Lindale.

Gilmer has a lot of talent, particularly at the skill positions, but we must avoid injuries and also must overcome the stigma of not having had much success in the playoffs historically and we have never won state. Made it to the finals against Cameron Yoe in 1981 is as close as we've come.

Time will tell if we are being overrated by Collier-Sharp. Most other pollsters rank Atlanta, Spring Hill and Daingerfield above us.

Go Buckeyes!

Gilmer is a sleeper....they were really good last year...they just ran into a buzz saw in Daingerfield in bi-district...keep an eye on the Buckeyes....

As the "voice of the Buckeyes", I personally believe that Gilmer is NOT overrated. Granted, we have made the playoffs the last 2 years and lost in bi-district both times, but two years ago we were a bit nervous, since we hadn't been the playoff land since 1991, and last year, as already noted, we lost to Daingerfield. Truthfully, we had as good, if not a better team than they did, but we fumbled near their goal line in the third quarter, and that sealed our fate. Personally, I DO believe the Collier-Sharp ranking is correct, and that TX Football doesn't give us the respect we deserve. As previously noted, we have gone 5-0, 5-0 in two different districts the past two years, and we have 8 returning offensive and 9 returning defensive starters from last year. All I can say is Daingerfield, look out. The Buckeyes are the Kings of East Texas this year, PROVIDING we stay relatively injury free. We are sick and tired of hearing about Daingerfield in our neck of the woods. They proved their total lack of class last year when Greenwood beat them. Basically, they are just a bunch of brats, and the Buckeyes will put them in their place this season. GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!
