The game that I saw this year, I commented to somebody that I believed a team with a big line and a big running back would give us problems. Our front seven seemed a little small.

Listened to the radio recap on the way home. A few things jumped out at me.

Tyler was 11 for 27. When is the last time you saw him with a percentage that low. Passes were either high or receivers simply dropped them.

Heights had 195 rushing. Very hard to tackle. Runs low and hard.

Trent Jackson with 247 yards rushing on 31 carries. That is the most carries I can remember him having. He was huffing and puffing in the fourth quarter.

The most telling statistic was that Yoakum did not have a first down in the fourth quarter. When it mattered we played some defense. We just need to do that the whole game.

The week off really hurt us. Flat, flat, flat.

We had one ball intercepted in the end zone and bad luck and bad play calling stalled a drive at the five yard line. Throw in two more touchdowns and it is a different ballgame. Give Yoakum credit. They tackle very well and played hard nosed football.

This isn't football related but it concerns sports, District 28, Cuero and Yoakum. The Lady Gobblers defeated the Lady Bulldogs in volleyball tonight. The Lady Gobblers are undefeated in district play. I am not positive but I think they've only lost 4 matches this year. Way to go Ladies

You can't compare Smithville's success to how Yoakum looked against the Gobblers. Pure rivarly adds weighs so much more and makes it more than just another Friday night game. Granted, Smithville looks very strong. However, you can't compare their success against Yoakum to Cuero's struggle. I do think Smithville is a sleeping giant in their district though.

10-10-2009, 12:15 AM
i know you cant compare, but everyone was seeming to think just bc smithville beat yoakum there is no way yoakum can stay in this one. well yoakum proved there a good team, and being rivals, you had to know it was gona be hard fought.

I for one would like to say, Great job Yoakum.....That group of srs. played there ass off tonight. Yes it was going to take one hell of a game and alot of luck to go along with an off night from Cuero and alot of bad play calls and turnovers to pull out a win...And for most of the night they got all of the above. Cuero showed alot of heart to never give up. This was a game the Gobblers really needed. First time in many years to be tested this early in distric play. The kids on both teams left it all on the field. As I stated early in the week, This game for so many reasons would be within 10 points. Trent & Ryan had a great game tonight. The week off hurt on timming tonight. Now lets go have a great week of practice and get ready to play some Gobbler football again.

Yes sir... Sorry, I wasn't trying to be anal or call you out on that statement. Yoakum did prove that they are worthy of a number 2 seed from our district unless Edna can give them a run.

This is where it went to hell for Yoakum. Rode Hights to a TD averaging 10+ yards a carry on that drive. Get the ball back, and pass (incomplete) with hobbling QB, run for 5 yards, pass again (incomplete). Punt Don't get cute, run the rock! That is when I said "not over yet". Anyway, hats off to both teams and I hope they heal fast. I think these 2 teams will make noise come playoff time.

YOAKUM -- Cuero running back Trent Jackson knows exactly what makes playing Yoakum special.

"It's a rivalry," Jackson said. "I used to watch my brother (Josh) play them. I always wanted to play Yoakum.

"They're 12 miles away. It's just a dream come true to play Yoakum." Jackson and the Gobblers made sure the dream had a happy ending by rallying for a 26-23 win in the District 28-3A opener for both teams on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

No. 6 Cuero (6-0, 1-0) never led in the 99th meeting between the two teams until quarterback Tyler Arndt threw his second touchdown pass to Ryan Barrientez with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

"We just had to come out and play Cuero football," Jackson said. "We came off of a bye week and we had to get back into football.

"They are a great football team. They did what they had to do. We just played a real good football game."

Jackson did his part by rushing 31 times for 247 yards and scoring on runs 5 and 47 yards. He rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns in last season's 49-14 win.

"He's a big-play guy," Arndt said. "When we're one play away from it, we hand the ball off to him. We have great confidence in him.

"He's going to be there for us and he was tonight."

The running of Jackson and the passing of Arndt helped the Gobblers overcome a 16-point third-quarter deficit while extending their winning streak over Yoakum (2-4, 0-1) to eight games, and improving their district record under coach Mark Reeve to 29-0.

"You got to give a lot of credit to Yoakum and you've got to give our kids a great credit," Reeve said. "They overcame a lot of adversity. Whatever could go wrong, went wrong.

"That's the mark of a really great football team. We've got some great leaders on it and the kids just kept making adjustments and never quit. If you never quit, you always have a chance to win."

The offensive line and running back Trey Hights gave the Bulldogs a chance to break the streak. Hights carried 28 times for 195 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 37 yards in his final game against Cuero.

"Our offensive line has been that way all year long," Yoakum coach Brent Kornegay said. "They've done a good job and Trey runs well. I'm real proud of their effort. We knew it wasn't over until it was over, and that's just the way it is."

Jackson got the Gobblers' comeback started by running around the right side and somehow managing to stay in bounds before reaching the end zone for his second touchdown with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Gobblers pulled within three points when Arndt threw a strike to Barrientez in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the Yoakum 28-yard line with 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"It's not like what we drew it up to be but good teams find a way to win and we did that tonight," Arndt said.

"We stuck with what's right. We stuck to the plan and luckily we were able to come out on top."

Jackson ran six times on Cuero's decisive drive before Arndt found Barrientez at the 3 on a slant on a third-and-nine from the 14, and the receiver bulled his way into the end zone.

"I just kept moving my feet," Barrientez said, "I knew I had to score. We just picked the intensity up, played as a team and played for each other, and came out with the win."

The Gobblers wrapped up the win when Colton Jacobs and Mason Rickman sacked Yoakum quarterback William Markert on the final two plays of the game.

"It was a special one," Jackson said. "You had two great teams. It was just like a state football game."

NOTES: GOING GREEN -- Cuero leads the overall series 65-28-6...

TALE OF TWO HALVES -- Markert was 6 of 8 for 108 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeffery Harrison in the first half. He went 2 of 7 for 5 yards in the second half and left the game briefly after spraining his ankle...FRUSTRATED GOBBLERS -- Cuero punted only once, but had two turnovers and failed to score twice from inside the Yoakum 20.

This was one heck of a game to watch.

I think CueroDad08 or someone made the comment that you can throw everything out when these two teams meet. He was right and I was Wrong in the prediction that I thought Cuero would roll these boys. Yoakum played their butts off and deserved to win. THose kids have nothing to be ashamed of. I will even complement the Yoakum coaching staff, they put together a great game plan and had everything working for them. THEN, the coaches lost their minds and ca,me out throwing on 1st and 10 with 30 sec left in the third. WHY? They had done everything right up to that point. Just keep giving Heights the rock!!!!

There was many things wrong with Cuero last Friday night. I don't want sound negative but I probably am.
1st - The kids played flat, maybe that has to do with the bye week, maybe it was getting out of school early, maybe it was Turkeyfest, I'm not sure but you have to remember that you don't win just by showing up, everyone will bring their "A" game vs Cuero.

2nd - Defense, Defense, Defense.... We look like crap, I will always say that a 4-2-5 (split defense) is the worst defense you can have. Yoakum drove the ball 95 yards in 13 plays. Here is my theory: After 6 plays of getting it rammed down your throat I would change it up, Blitz, stunt your D line, or go to a different look.

3rd - Tyler had a off night, it happens, but we had a great running game and that carried us. However there was one pass right away thrown over the CB with a club hand, then we never threw that way again until late in the qtr. I would have picked on that guy all night instead of throwing to Markett's side.

4th - Barrientez made two great plays and Jackson carried the boys all night. Good job of stepping up.

Cuero escaped with a win, that's what really matters. Lots of stuff to work on. GO get them next week Cuero.

the 4-2-5 is actually a very nice defense as long as you have the players for it. it keeps 8 guys in the box at all times and if they try to spread u out you have 5 db's to cover it. cuero doesn't have any size this year and that's going to hurt them against bigger teams with powerful backs. it's funny how this defense had no problems in the past. it's just once cuero is outmatched, it's gonna be somewhat ineffective but you can say that about any defense.
