The home court can be a big factor in volleyball. That is why this one has me worried. Ingleside is tough at home.

Sinton survives with key District 31-3A win over Ingleside

INGLESIDE — The Sinton volleyball team knows how to come back against its opponents.

The Pirates were quite good at it, too Tuesday night, especially when it counted as they rallied from an early two-point deficit in the finale for a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 15-11 District 31-3A road victory over rival Ingleside.

Sinton (23-7 overall) moved a step closer to securing its fourth consecutive district title in improving to 8-0 in district play.

“We fought back and came together tonight,” said Pirates coach Virginia Parsons, whose team trailed in every game. “When our backs are against the wall — we know we have to play (even harder).”

The Mustangs, who were swept by the Pirates in Sinton in the previous district meeting between the teams, fell to 6-2 in district.

“Most teams after they’ve lost those first two games lose their momentum but these girls never quit,” Ingleside coach Jamie Turnbough said. “This is the team that I’ve had all year. They’re fearless, and they don’t quit.”

The Pirates erased an early two-point deficit in the finale with a key 13-7 run to take it.

Brette Threadgill, Savannah Gorman and Mallary Bryant helped Sinton’s front line dominate the decisive Game 5.

Threadgill and Gorman had 17 and 14 kills respectively in the match, while Kobi Sliva and Chelsea Martino combined for 43 assists for the Pirates. Cadie Vanecek and Alex Zapada had 25 digs each to lead Sinton’s defense.

“We’re coming off two back-to-back big (matches, including Aransas Pass last week) and we knew tonight was a huge (one) for us,” Parsons said. “In the middle there, we kind of lost focus but we kept coming back after that and the momentum swung our way.”

Kelli Kemp and Crystal Alvarado had 11 kills apiece to lead Ingleside, while Jill Hydrick and Chelsea Claypool combined for 12 blocks for the Mustangs. Ingleside’s Kaylie Adams had a match-high 33 assists, while Hydrick added 15 digs.

Ingleside scored the first two points of the decisive game, before Bryant and Zapada combined for two kills to spearhead the Pirates’ key comeback.

“We had crucial mistakes happen at the wrong time (in the finale),” Turnbough said. “Sinton deserved to win they were the better team in Game 5.”

Ingleside also held five point leads in the first two games but couldn’t hold on against Sinton.

The Mustangs overcame an early three point deficit to take a 7-5 lead in the Game 3. The Pirates then used a 15-11 spurt to take a 20-18 lead, as Savannah Gorman had a kill and block to cap Sinton’s run.

Alvarado, Kemp, Hydrick and Claypool combined for four kills, Alvarado had a block and Adams two service points to help Ingleside score seven of the game’s final nine points to force a fourth game.

The Mustangs took a 9-7 lead in Game 4, before an errant serve by Ingleside and Sliva’s four straight service points and three aces sparked a 7-2 Sinton run to give the Pirates a 14-11 lead.

Alvarado had five straight service points and an ace, while Kemp had a key kill to trigger Ingleside’s 6-0 run and give it a 17-14 advantage.

The Mustangs eventually held a 24-21 lead, before the Pirates scored the next three points to tie it at 24 on an ace by Treadgill. Kemp followed with a kill and Brooke Kuehler had an ace to give Ingleside the game and send it into the decisive fifth game and set up the Pirates’ heroics late.
