Do you use a broker or do you buy off the Pink Sheets yourself? Do you use Etrade or another online program?

That's why I added the green round smile! LOL

R80 give the $10,000 imaginary investment portfolio a try....I believed in mine so much that I really bought the $10,000 for my investment for the day.

Let's see how we end up in 3 months....

I have been doing this for 52 years, starting small and making a lot of mistakes. It is interesting--a mixture of Cost Accounting, Savvy, Psychology, Moxie, Luck, Strategy, Ratios and Proportions, Statistics, and a few other things.

Remember 10% of investors make 90% of the returns over the years-- playing the stock market...please give it a try.... OC

To Farmers Fan: I am a "Self Directed" investor with Charles Schwab, making all my decisions for many years.

I do my own research but have also taught others my overall system and we now trade info on investment ideas all the time. A group of knowledge is better than going it all by yourself....

And did you buy all these at or close to their 52 week low???? Almost every one you showed is at or above it's 52 week high.

Farmer:
I bought these today! I use a whole system to determine what to buy. Remember, stocks TEND to keep going in the direction they are going for a period of time.

If you will look at the growth of these they are all going up; the trick is to determine the ones that still have legs to grow--and not topped out on P/E and a dozen other things...

Out of say, 20.000 on the overall market only 200 maybe are worth buying and maybe 20 are really worth buying.. it proves out....tough odds.

I see ARSD hit $2.25 today!

Old Cardinal
10-08-2009, 02:18 PM
I ran off a few more:

YONG was $10.09------> now 10.35

TSTC was 7.10-------> now 7.97

RINO was 23.08-------> now 22.84

IFLO was 12.03 ------> now 11.96

MVIS was 5.20 -------> now 5.48

Farmersfan
10-08-2009, 02:21 PM
You meant ASRG right????

Old Cardinal

Yes ASRG....I think it has real legs!

As of last night's close the portfolio as you show it is down $385. There must be a mistake either on my part or yours on PPAF (Protective Products of America) since it closed yesterday @ $1.01/share and you show you bought 142 shares at $7.04 per share. It has not been that high in quite some time, if ever!:doh:

Old Cardinal
10-09-2009, 02:34 PM
At time of purchase it was PPAF 952 $1.05 for a cast of $999.60

Also I caught another mistake!

DYAI at time of purchase was 625 shares at $1.60 for a cost of $1000
~~~~~~~~
At present, DYAI 625 share $1.80= $1125.00
Also, PPAF 952 X $1.04= $ 990
Therefore these two are up combined $115.00
Old Cardinal
Quick running the rest of the numbers today
ASRG 571 X $2.35 = $ 1285
YONG 99 X $10.55 = $ 1044
TSTC 141 X $ 8.00 = $ 1128
RINO 43 X 23.73 = $ 1020
IFLO 83 X $ 12.59 = $ 1032
MVIS 192 X $5.49 = $1050
TUIJF 826 X 1.24 = $ 1024
SOMD 833 X 1.36 = $ 1133
DYAI 625 X 1.80 = $ 1125
PPAF 952 X 1.04 = $ 990
Therefore the $ 10,000 investment is now worth... $ 10,831 less $8.99 per transaction if you were using Schwab Self-Directed investing.
Now if you could sustain that growth of 8.3 on a weekly basis for 54 weeks--That would be a growth of 430 + %- plus the reinvesting amount plow-back..... LOL
Now before you get too excited the market was up overall a little each day!
As of close last night, 10/19/2009, the portfolio is up $1312.98 or a little over 13%. Not too bad. The S&P 500, as a means of comparison, is up just under 2.5% for the same period, 10/9/2009 close through 10/19/2009 close.
The only downside is that the risk of the portfolio as measured by standard deviation is at least 5-10 times as high as that of the S&P 500.
The old saying is no risk, no gain!!
To Ronwx:
Yes I go for the winners that will climb big time.
The trick is to winnow out the few that are going to soar hopefully and spread your risk among the candidates.
As Jean-Claude Killey, the great French Skier once said....to win you have to come down the slope wide open accepting and conquering all risk!
The is only a hand full of the risky ones that will make you money at any given time.
It took me four decades to learn how to win-- most of the time.
Just to test the waters and get a feel for it all as I am new to this sort of investing.....I bought about $550.00 worth of assorted stocks back in Mar/Apr. My portfolio is now pushing $900.00. :)
And I am guessing you had fun doing it also LOL
Now I play the wild ones but after I make good profits
I try to sock the profits away into high dividend safer stocks...such as ARLP & WES that pay 7%+ dividends and have appreciated around 25% in the last 4 or 5 months.
I'm still a "beginner" though. My extent of it is reading everything I can get my hands on about this company and that depending on what is going on in the world at the time.....drawing conclusions, and basically making educated guesses, LOL. One that has done well for me is OSK. They build the MRAP for the US Military and when I saw they had won a major contract to upgrade all the suspension systems to these trucks military wide, I thought "hmmmm..." I bought it at around $11 a share.....it's currently at $35 a share.
I have had people contact we that want to learn/discuss Self Directed Investing...if it is all right with the Monitors we will do a little of that:
Personally, I love to see people take more control over their lives! LOL
This is how things printed out
Symbol
% Dividends
3-month gain 6-month gain
All these I checked out ; but I will recommend for you to do your own Due Diligence on all of these....
Ones I already own:
ALRP Dividends 7.61%; 3-mon chart gain 8.27%; 6-month 25.93%
WES Div.6.60% 16.77% 28.88
BTE 5.27% 3-mon37.34% 6-month 111.43%
CNP 5.88% 10.64% 22.39
MFA 13.35% 8.15% 37.45
NLY 15.82% 15.82% 28.50
RWT 6.70% -7.85% -1.38 will sell after next dividend paid
RSO 23.35% 79.04% 68.61
Ones I don't own but would consider OK for buying:
CMO 16.40% 1.29% 23.56%
CRE
8.50 29.98 49.72%
Also a little less dividends but positive present growth thus far:
GLT 3.28% 12.66% 65.47%
IP 0.41% 38.00 195.01%
MY 2.59% 12.60% 24.31%
POL 0.0 77.10 139.61%
I did not take the time to look up dividends on the following; but short-term copper/gold etc:, big companies are in a unique growth niche period!
SLT - - - - 45.97% 136.84%
PCU - - - - 49.66 90.59
MTL - - - - 128.34 276.50
TCK - - - - 53.80 393.84
FCX - - - - 40.85 109.51
I would recommend whatever you do--spread your risk out-- in these turbulent times.
Looking this research over, I would think ole-- Dr. Richard O. Bennett-- from Lamar would give me at least a B- on this quick research: safer scheme.
He headed up the Business Management Dept; taught me Senior courses in Investments & Corporate Finance; and was my Advisor...I finished undergraduate studies in 1965....
..Quite honestly I think 45 years of "bayou savvy" and ''swamp moxie'' has also helped a bit ......LOL
A mistake above ALRP should be ARLP
I still watch your portfolio. There are only 8 of your original 10 still being quoted. Assuming that IFLO and TUIJF went under, looks like about a $1230 loss now. Do you know what happened to those two companies?
Old Cardinal
11-25-2009, 06:37 PM
Here is what happened IFLO was bought out by Kimberley-Clarke @ $ 12.65 X 83 per share for $ 1050 or $ 50 profit......or you could take the K-C stock offered which I felt was the better deal.
PPAF I sold when Obama and his Czars cut out the contracts for personal protective armor and vehicle armor for our troops in harms way Broke even $1,000 approximately.
On TUIJF it was bought by a foreign company
and I will have to find what it is now worth when I can take a little time...Will let you know at that time....
~~~~~
OK I found the info of TUIJF it had a name change to Bellatrix Exploration symbol BLLXF and the 781 shares or now worth $ 1211.00 Therefore,

$ 1211 + 1000 + 1050 added to your number above is what happened to the $ 10,000 imaginary investment.....An that figure was 9776+1050+1211= $ 12037
or a 20% gain in 3 months OR 80% gain figured out to 12 months at interest % per year..

It is interesting FarmersFan was the only one that communicated he wanted to expand his knowledge of the moxie of the market. It has been a pleasure to work with him!

My favorite of all the above is ASRG, it closed at $ 2.99 and has really great potential.

Rarely I hit one at the right time; however, I bought LEOM and it just soared the other day.

I plan to study / SPIN / PURE / CLX / KMB / AERT

I will start with Yahoo Finance to begin the study
Would you like to participate by finding info on these companies, there and elsewhere?

Here is a brief update of what I have going on Cardinal.
I obviously don't have the financial liquidity to put 10K into any investment at one time but here is what I did previous to communications with you and afterwards.

I purchased 1000 shares of QMM (QUATERRA RES INC), at 1.27 which is now trading at 1.68 for a about a 25% gain overall. But I also bought 1000 shares of BAJFF (Baha Mining Corp) at .76 a share and it is now trading at .63 a share for a 24% loss. So that has been a wash. Previous to our visit I had purchased shares of CTIC (CELL THERAPEUTICS) at 1.31 and it is now trading at 1.11 and I would have already dumped it but a advisor friend of mine (Not you) continues to believe this stock will take a huge jump in Feb and will go over 5.00 a share in the new year.
I don't have the finances to get really serious with these high risk pink sheet stocks but it is fun to learn from someone who has done this for years. I worked as a broker with a series 7 and series 63 license for 5 years but never needed to evaluate small cap or penny stocks because we were "ENCOURAGED" to sell from our Model Portfolio and were never allowed to offer aggressive or overly risky opportunities. It was the curse of working as a corporate Investment Broker. I did not have the temperment to be a successful independant broker so I left that career field. Your input and knowledge has been most welcome in helping to get me over the "Corporate" mentality of investing in only those companies deemed SAFE and trying to think "outside the box" so to speak. Thanks again!

Thank you my friend....I have enjoyed our e-mail info exchange friendship!

One of the major problems with those dipping their toe in the water for the first time; is going straight to the most risky mindfield of all--penny stocks.

Yes, I play about 5% of my portfolio in this arena. The other 95% is invested up higher in the food chain.

I would suggest you try two imaginary portfolios--one very risky and one that is very growth oriented.

This is a common problem I have encountered that folks all want to hit the jackpot in their first months of investing.

Move slow and learn till you get the moxie and savvy for the right ones in either portfolio.

Again you will be a winner on down the line if you don't dwell in the most risky stocks. lol

Sometimes we are just lucky or unlucky....

TUIJF($1,000) with just a symbol change became BLLXF and BLLXF has just soared.
In fact, it gained 190.3% in the last 3-months.
Therefore, $ 1000 has now become $2003 in such a brief time period. It's better to be lucky than smart I guess lol
