Region 4, Week 5 Preview

Once again we start with the districts that are fighting it out to see who will be district champ and who plays on in the postseason.

District 29

Divine (1-0)
Bandera (1-0)
Hondo (1-0)
Pearsall (0-0)
Lytle (0-1)
Crystal City (0-1)
Carrizo Springs (0-1)

Devine (4-1) vs. Pearsall (4-0)
This is the big game in D29 this week. Devine is the favorite as they have played the tougher pre-district schedule and more than held their own. But Pearsall has put up some good numbers and although on first glance their schedule appears a little weaker, the Mavericks have made very easy work out of each opponent. Throw in the fact that Pearsall handled Devine last year and we get the feeling this game will be very competitive and very close.
We’re going against the grain and picking the Pearsall Mavericks to pull a mini-upset.
Pearsall by 2

Bandera (4-1) vs. Crystal City (1-4)
Bandera rolls to an easy victory.
Bandera by 24

Hondo (3-1) vs. Carrizo Springs (1-4)
Hondo has blown out weaker opponents all year and that continues this week.
Hondo by 27

Lytle @ SA Sam Houston
Covered in D27 write-up

District 31

Sinton (1-0)
Ingleside (1-0)
Robstown (1-0)
Mathis (1-0)
CC West Oso (0-1)
Aransas Pass (0-1)
Orange Grove (0-1)
Falfurrias (0-1)

Aransas Pass (0-4) @ Sinton (4-0) : The Panthers have not scored a point since week zero. This could be another long night for the Panthers. Sinton by 21.

CC West Oso (1-3) @ Falfurrias (0-4) : The Bears will use this game to help prepare for next week's game against the Mustangs. Bears by 35

Ingleside (4-0) @ Mathis (2-2) : Keys to the game: Mathis must control the clock and not cough up the ball. If they can do those 2 things, they can keep the score close, but if they get behind by even 2 TDs, Mustangs notch another victory. We think Ingleside just has too much of everything. Ingleside 42 Mathis 14

Orange Grove (1-3) @ Robstown (3-1) : In back-to-back weeks the Bulldogs have pushed their opponents to the limit! If they can eat up the clock and create some turnovers, they have a shot at keeping their playoff hopes alive. Another loss and Orange Grove will be in an early hole. Orange Grove by 3

District 32

Lyford (1-0)
Raymondville (1-0)
Hidalgo (1-0)
Zapata (1-0)
Progresso (0-1)
Rio Hondo (0-1)
Port Isabel (0-1)
La Feria (0-1)

Raymondville (3-1) vs. La Feria (1-3)
Is it too early in the season for a must win? We don’t think so as we see this as a must win for La Feria. But, Raymondville seems to be rounding into the form that had many picking them to be the favorites in D32. We like the Bearcats.
Raymondville by 8

Rio Hondo (0-4) vs. Port Isabel (1-3)
One win between these two teams? Some strange happenings going on down south so far this season. Port Isabel sure looks like the better team on paper, but not if they can’t hold onto the ball. Rio Hondo has been…how can we say this nicely…not playing very well so far this season. Looks like a rebuilding year (they start 10 sophs)for the Bobcats. We like PI in what could be an error prone game.
Port Isabel by 10

Lyford (4-0) vs. Zapata (1-3)
The Zapata Hawks picked up their first win of the season last week vs Rio Hondo. Lyford looks like a team that could pull away from the pack in D32, but Zapata has defeated Lyford the in their last three meetings 2006-08, so you know the Hawks are coming to win. We like the Lyford Bulldogs this year.
Lyford by 4

Hidalgo (2-2) vs. Progresso (2-2)
Hidalgo pulled out an OT squeaker vs. Port Isabel last week and Progresso lost to Raymondville, but did put up 21 points, and the stats say the Ants have the best offense in D32. It’s the Red Ants O vs. The Pirates D. We like Hidalgo.
Hidalgo by 5

District 25

Giddings v Robinson:

The Buffs will bring their balanced offense into this pre season finale and put up some big numbers. Giddings will win this one by 3 tds.

Smithville v Yoakum:

The Tigers have improved over the season but the Bulldogs have improved as well. The Bulldogs are starting to look like a strong contender in their district where Cuero is King. Look for a high scoring game with the Bulldogs winning by 2 tds.
Bellville @ Wharton D26 editor

Columbus open
La Grange open
Sealy open

District 26.
West Orange Stark (3-1) @ Brookshire Royal (1-3)

There will be college scouts throughout the stands for this showcase of talent. Size, speed and athleticism will be aplenty in Brookshire Friday night. WOS and Brookshire have both played tough schedules, but Brookshire defensive struggles will continue.

Prediction: West Orange Stark

Houston Christian (3-1) @ Sweeny (2-2)

Houston Christian has had a great start to the season, Sweeny on the other hand has not. Last week versus Bay City, Sweeny was embarrassed. Multiple personal fouls were called on both teams with two Sweeny players ejected.
Sweeny has three known injuries heading into this weeks game, two of which are on the offensive line. Last year Sweeny scored over 50 points on Houston Christian. Don't expect to see that this year.

Prediction: Sweeny

Bellville (3-1) @ Wharton (0-3)

Bellville will look to close out their non district schedule with a win in Wharton. The Brahama offense and defense will be the headline this week. Wharton closes out their non district play with their third D 25 opponent. Wharton lost both of them this year. Last year Wharton lost at the "Pasture of Pain". Possible rain in the forcast could play a big roll in the outcome.

Prdiction: Bellville

District 27
SA Sam Houston (3-1) vs. Lytle (2-2)
Sam Houston should cruise in this one.
SH by 17

Somerset (3-1) vs. 2A Geronimo Navarro
GM is a very good 2A team and we think they win this ball game.
GM by 10

The rest of D27 is idle

District 28.
Yoakum (2-2) @ Smithville (3-1) covered in D25

Edna (3-0) @ 2A Refugio (4-0)
Refugio is the 5th ranked team in 2A and they donkey stomped Edna last year 56-9.
So far, Refugio doesn’t seem to have quite the offensive fire power they had last year, but that could be a result of a change in offensive philosophy as they are running more. The Bobcat defense is very good and anchored by Rice commit and state power lifting champ LB Dylan Klare. The key to the game will be Edna’s ability to run the ball vs. the Refugio D. If Edna can run for 200+ yards, they have a very good chance to win. If the Bobcats stuff the run, their potent offense will be on the field enough to score 30+ as they wear down the Cowboy D. Edna has been flying under the radar and just may be a good team, but they have yet to play a team like Refugio. Refugio is a very hard place to win for visitors.
Refugio by 12

The rest of 28 is idle this week.

Somerset is 3-1 not 2-2. Navarro is 4-0

Ingleside 34 Mathis 23

Mathis running attack should provide a decent test for the Mustangs. Dont think Mathis can consistantly keep Ingleside from scoring unless they limit the amount of times Ingleisde is in offense and comes up with a couple of stops.

I was just checking out the 2A football website and they have Edna as a 32 point underdog to Refugio. I guess considering they beat us by 40+ last year it shouldn't be that big of a surprise.

Our kids actually think they can go in there and win. We had a tough year last year as we had key injuries, a new staff, very few returners, and some bad attitudes. All that has changed and I think we can compete with Refugio. I look for this game to be close at the end.
