There are well over 100 high school football rivalries that predate 1922 and also over 100 rivalries that extend beyond 72 games... Sorry, but this article is grossly mistaken!

One of the best rivalries in the state. Can't wait till tomorrow night. I always look forward to this game every year and don't mind the drive to Jasper. Parking on the other hand, is a different story.;)

they obviously haven't looked at a list recently; they got bad information several years ago and kept adding to those. Celina and PP have only played 47 times, for instance.

they could've gone several places to get more accurate information.

Jasper and Silsbee has had some great games over the years. I truly expect a good one this year.

Two years ago, Silsbee went up to Jasper with a playoff spot on the line between the two. Jasper came out firing and took a 26-7 lead at halftime. Silsbee came back and took a 36-26 lead late in the 4th but Jasper responded with 2 td's, the last with less than a minute to play, to win it 40-36. Very exciting game!

The Longview Lobos and Marshall Mavericks have played 98 times with Longview leading series 51-42-5. They will play for the 99th time on October 16th at Lobo Stadium . They first played in 1909!

Five years ago Silsbee went up to Jasper with an undefeated record on the line. This was Silsbee's first year after dropping to 3A and the Tigers got a 29-28 win over the Bulldogs. Very exciting game that was actually delayed about 40 minutes when the power was lost at the stadium during the 2nd quarter. Silsbee got the win by denying Jasper's two point conversion attempt at the end of the game.

Jasper went on to play Gilmer in the state title game that season, losing 48-46. Another fantastic game.

I think this year Bay City and El Campo will play for either the 103rd time or 104th

Wharton and El Campo played for the 100th time earler in the season

Another memorable game was in 1975 when Jasper safety David Scott returned an interception 109 yards for a game winning touchdown. That to this day is the longest interception return in all of Texas high school football.

LOL. Love the way you keep ignoring the attempts to hijack the thread and divert the attention to the errors in the article about the # of times everyone has/hasn't played.

Jasper and Silsbee is almost always a very close and good game. I have seen a few exception. The last exception is one night in Silsbee a couple years ago where mercifully the game was stopped because of bad weather and Silsbee was killing Jasper at the time.

Hup, I remember that game too. Silsbee won that 42-0 and they only played 2 1/2 quarters. Bad storm came in and the Jasper coach at the time (Lauve) decided to just call it a night during the delay. That was probably one of the worst Jasper teams I have ever seen. It was indeed a merciful storm.

I have been told that New Boston vs DeKalb is the oldest rivalry in the State of Texas. I will check with our local sports editor and get an exact #, but I believe that went over 100 a while ago.:nerd:

This is off-topic and don't want to hijack the thread but according to my records DeKalb and New Boston played for the 80th time this year.

Another great game between Silsbee and Jasper was the '88 game which ended in a 10-10 tie. Silsbee advanced to the playoffs based on winning the penetration count. Silsbee had 2 touchdowns called back on penalties and fumbled a sure touchdown through the back of the endzone for a touchback.

I was at that game. When the power went out it was chaos in the stands. Some idiot ran into a telephone pole trying to park outside the stadium.

I was at that game. Neither team had much luck on offense.
