Gilmer? Year in and year out lately. WO-S? Always legit.

There are multiple.

Giddings? They've been very good for several years in a row.

'83-'84 Daingerfield team is the most dominant team to ever play in 3A classification, IMO.

Also, the Sealy teams the 4-peated would have to be up there as well.

Without a doubt, the Daingerfield squad from 1983 was the most intimidating. And the fact that they fielded amazing teams for several years after that probably makes that little run of D'Field squads the most intimidating ever.

Those SLC teams from the early-90's, particularly 1992, were tough. Vernon that same year (want to say they played SLC in the Semis) is probably the most overlooked team in history, but would've likely gone down as an all-time great if SLC hadn't beat them. Nobody gave Vernon a run that year until the Dragons. Same for SLC, who won a toughie against Vernon.

Sealy's four-peat were also intimidating as all get-out. Mills had a machine going back then.

1980 Pittsburg
1986 Jefferson
Turn-of-the-millenium Everman
Cuero's 44 in a row (early-70's)
Brownwood just before that

Don't know much about football before that, but do know that Breck had some amazing teams under Joe Kerbel and Emory Bellard back in the 50's. You may be able to throw them into the conversation, I just don't know enough to say how dominant they were.

I think those early 90's Vernon teams did win one title...lost in 2 title games..how about the Cuero teams of the early 70s?

Vernon won the 1990 title. Lost to Mexia in 89, 22-21. 91 team tied Burnet 20-20 in the 3rd round and Burnet advanced on first downs. 92 team is the one that lost to slc in the 3rd round, which was really the state championship game based on how slc routed the rest of the teams they played that year.

Sealy's teams from '94-'99... though they were bumped in the first round in '98, every other year they were in the State Championship... 4 titles in a row '94-'97....

most people would say you couldn't count Brownwood or Cuero in the 70s since 3A then is what 4A is today, but blah blah blah, don't need to be that technical about it...

speaking of those Cuero teams... snuck into the playoffs in '70 and lost to B'wood in the finals... then in '71 and '72 they went 19-2 before winning 44 games in a row... they were pretty intimidating from everything I've heard...

One of my favorite stories about those teams is that in one of those years the team bus broke down on about a two hour trip... Cuero showed up just at kickoff... didn't even have time to stretch the story goes... they won 50-something to 0... that gave them the reputation of a team that "got off the bus, whupped your ass, then got back on the bus and went home"

That Marlin team that lost to Atlanta was Ok, but come on they got blown out in the title game.

2003 Gainesville was salty....they had it all

@BwdLions — 3A before 1980 was the equivalent of 4A today, before the UIL bumped everyone up a class and created 5A. But the school sizes were about the same then as what they are in 3A now, so I think you're OK.

As far as the teams that make you think, "This game will be tough" There is a list of several
Here is my opinion in no particular order
Abilene Wylie
China Spring
Liberty Hill
Gilmer
Celina
Everman ( before they moved up)
Kennedale
Sealy ( in the 90's)
It seams like there is always a team from Texarkana in the mix as well. I'm sure I'm missing some but those are the ones that come to mind of teams that are just consistantly good.

Burnet 2003 team and 2004 team. Size Speed and Toughness.
Shipley, McGee and company. Offensive line was tough as nails.

I agree, you really need to go back to 1980 to get an idea of which teams have been dominate in 3A (as we know it).

It was the Stephen McGee and Jordan Shipley show at each game...with Bob Shipley at the helm.

The 1981 Cameron Yoe team was pretty dominating...Paul Hoelscher at Quarterback, and with Oscar Riggins, Vic Powell, Jeff Boutwell, Donny Hauk, etc. It was a blowout against Gilmer in the final that year. The 1987 Cameron Yoe team should have made it to the final, but Robert Strait of Cuero ended that run.

I'd have to say... '89 Mexia was really good.

Vernon only lost by 1 point though.

Twirling time has a point about the change of classifications. I think we need to jump the discussion to Class 2A when you are talking about prior to 1980.

Bridge City beat McKinney 30-6 in 1966 for the state championship.

Allthough BC had lost to Brownwood in the finals 14-0 the year before----McKinney was picked as #1 throughout the year!
BC Coach Chief Wilson showed mercy in this game as Steve Wooster and Co. just plain mauled the McKinney team, from the word go....
