Region III GOTW: Silsbee vs Jasper

Based upon the "conventional wisdom" at the start of the season, this should be a gimme for Silsbee. Based upon what has happened since opening day, Jasper may have a chance to win.

Silsbee seems horribly inconsistent. Don't really know what's going on over there. They look like they come expecting a war some weeks and just during others.

Here are their scores so far.

Silsbee Tigers (1-3/0-0)
08/28....(4A) Houston Davis W 57-13
09/04....@ Diboll L 35-49
09/11....@ (4A) Lumberton L 14-20
09/18....(2A) #6 Newton L 20-21

Blow out Davis, then gift wrap a win to what seems like a Diboll squad that is down, then loses again to Lumberton before showing up for the Newton game.

We know they have the talent to go toe-to-toe with Jasper, but which Silsbee team will show up?

Jasper has a new coach and a new attitude...and I love it! Not to sound cocky, but I'll take Jasper by 21. I think their defense is just that good.

I think Jasper has a good chance to win, but Silsbee has had two weeks to prepare for Jasper. I expect a close game, to be decided by less than 7 points. Silsbee is not without talent. With a QB already committed to a D1 school, they gotta be tough.

Only thing I know about Silsbee is that we played them in 06 in Conroe. Beat em.... but dang they had a fast QB that year.

Silsbee's QB this year is much faster and can actually throw the ball extremely well.

I take it you are from West Columbia. That was a heartbreaking loss for Silsbee that year. Was up by 10 with 2 minutes to play and lose.

We lost one of our key players that game. REALLY hurt us the next game. Jareth Edwards. He was our fastest player on the team.


I remember the opening kickoff, your guys return man busted loose and was running for a TD and Jareth sucked him up REALLY quick and tackled him on about the 5 yd line. Y'all still scored but I was amazed how fast he caught that guy.


And yeah, y'all must be pretty good if your QB is alot better this year, because that guy was good. We just couldn't stop that option. He was tearing us a new one on the ground. On a side note, I think our RB Jared Flannel went for about 275 yds on the ground. :clap:

Silsbee doesn't run the veer anymore. They run the spread with their West Virginia bound QB. They have three times the passing yardage than rushing yards in the first 4 games. Quite the difference from that '06 season.

Silsbee is much tougher than you may think. Forget about the records, this is much more important than mere life or death when these two teams play.

i would like for it to happen, but the little slow dogs from jasper will not hang any 27 point margin on Silsbee. :(

Why not? I understand this is a rivalry, and all, but Diboll hung 49 on them. I think y'all can do that, too. I could be wrong, but I think the Dawgs win this one rather easily.;)

True, Diboll did, but then Newton was able to only score 21 points on Silsbee, and Newton is probably a far better team than Diboll. It all depends on which Silsbee team shows up. It is amost a certainty, the very best Silsbee team will show up for this game. Then again, Jasper may show up for the game also. ;)

Rivalry noted, I think Jasper will take this one. Silsbee's record is deceiving, as they have had some good competition. This may be one of the only remaining games Silsbee will add to their loss column, but if Jasper slips up on the fundamentals, the Tigers will make them pay.

Jasper will not put up 42 points on Silsbee.
Silsbee has one of the best QBs in the state.
Silsbee defense is coming around at the right time.
I look for it to be a tight ball game.

They are a very large enrollment school that has not had a stellar long run in any sports since dropping from 4A.

You are so wrong.

How about boys basketball for just one example?

In the 5 years that they have been 3A (this year being the 6th) they have made the state semi-finals once, regional finals 3 times, regional semi-finals twice. That's just one example. But that's all that's really needed since you said no long run in ANY sport. I would say a year in and year out regional tourney team is stellar.

Jasper capitalized on Silsbee mistakes, but Silsbee gave this game away with that late interception. 3rd and long with 2 minutes left and they throw deep? They should have run the ball, taken time off the clock and then punted to pin Jasper deep. Don't get me wrong...I'm glad they didn't, but that was a bad call by the Silsbee coaching staff IMO.

Yea...I totally agree with you. It didn't make a lot of sense, especially since Jasper had no more time outs left and the whole field to go. But I think it does Jasper some good knowing that they can come away with a win from behind like that with time running out...especially with a Div 1 caliber QB like they had...if you let Silsbee stay in the game like Jasper did...he definately can beat you with his arm & legs

When he went back to pass...I couldn't believe the coaches made that call to pass.

I was thinking the exact thing when I read the play-by-play. What the heck are they doing passing at midfield with 2:00 min left? That is a horrible decision and the kind that will get you beat (obviously). Run the clock as far down as possible... run a draw play... again let it run down... then kick it deep and make them drive the field with no more than 1:30 left. Hadn't Jasper already muffed one punt? It is really surprising to me that McGallion allowed that.

This was a fast pace game. I mean it was 7-7 and they had only been playing for 35 seconds. Then it was 14-7 with 8:00 minutes left in the first quarter. There wasn't much scoring after that but it was still a much tighter game than I thought.

In a way, it did not suprise me that they tried because Silsbee had completed some amazing passes. But, as other teams have learned, when you put the ball in the air against the Dogs, the Dogs are going to catch their share. McGill is nearing double figures in interceptions in just five games. It appeared that if he had cleared just one more tackler he would have been in the end zone on that last one.

Let me say this. Silsbee may be 1-4 but they have to be one of the best 1-4 teams in Texas. WOS may have their hands full next week against Silsbee.
