PORT ISABEL — It might be just the first district contest, but the importance is like it’s Week 10.

Hidalgo visits Port Isabel tonight in what could be 32-3A’s best game tonight.

The Pirates (1-2) got their first win at Falfurrias two weeks ago and head coach Robin Kirk said they’ll try and parlay that momentum into a win at PI.

“It’s a huge game for us,” said Kirk, in his first year with the Pirates. “We’re a very young football team and going over there is not an easy task. We’ll have our hands full.”

The Tarpons (1-2) have had to swallow two tough losses bracketed around a win over Valley View.

PI quarterback Kyle DeMoss is among the league’s leaders in rushing and passing, while Hidalgo QB Kevin Trevino, who left the game against the Jerseys with an injury, is set to return. He’s second in the league in passing.

Raymondville (2-1) at Progreso (2-1)

The Bearkats will look to win their third straight game when they take on the Red Ants tonight.

Wideout Skylore Janes is tops in the district in receptions (15) and B.J. Flores has two 100-yard rushing games under his belt.

Raymondville has won nine straight meetings with Progreso, which will try and counter with 32-3A’s top rusher, Armando Pintor (496 yards).

Rio Hondo (0-3) at Zapata (0-3)

Two teams searching for their first ‘W’ go at it tonight in Zapata. Rio Hondo faced three playoff teams from a year ago, including state powerhouse Cuero and stout Robstown and Ingleside teams. Isaiah De la Cruz will start at quarterback for the ’Cats tonight, but expect to see freshman Juan Puga as well.

District 32-A Agua Dulce (1-2) at Santa Maria (1-3)

Santa Maria opens up district at home against the Longhorns and are 1-1 under coach Robert Gutierrez. Agua Dulce beat Flour Bluff’s sophomore team last week.

Non-district Nuevo Leon Tigres at Santa Rosa (2-2)

The Warriors have their final preseason tuneup tonight against the Tigres. Santa Rosa lost a close game at La Feria last week, but the running game put up 222 yards against the Lions, led by Josh Watrous (85 yards, TD).

La Villa (1-2) at San Diego (3-1)

The Cards wrap their non-district slate against the Vaqueros tonight. San Diego loves to run the ball and will look to use its size as an advantage. La Villa will counter with the trio of QB A.J. Garza, QB/WR Ricky Cantu and RB Tony Contreras.

Thanks! I wish your Gobblers luck too, but they usually don't need it. :D

Best Wishes to Cuero too.
