Toss up between Chris Smith (all time leader at NHS with over 5000 yards) and Dexter Pratt. Dexter was probably more dangerous. Chris is a senior at TCU playing fullback.

There was actually a guy in my class at Sweeny that would have been one of the greatest, but I believe he dropped out after our freshman year. No pass no play would have gotten him anyway. He was dumb as a brick. He once tried to bat in summer ball with a fungo bat. Ended up being shot to death by the Matagorda County Sherriff's deputies when he pointed a pellet gun at them after they surrounded his trailer. Drugs were also a problem with him.

Despite all his vices and his lack of intelligence, he was one heckuva a running back. His name was Arthur Gaines.

Just off the top of my head I would have to say Freddie Stoglin. He was pretty recent. He graduated the year we lost in the semis to Texarkana/Texas. he also played both ways. Seriously if he would not have gotten hurt in that game we might have won our 8th... The guy was amazing... He ended up at TCU but I believe injuries took him out of the game for good

At Columbia there are 2 that come to mind. In the late 80's it was Wayne Williams - #1 team in the state at one point his senior year in 4A - went on to play at LSU. In recent years it would have to be Jared Flannel - currently plays in the secondary at Texas Tech, who by the way I hope loses to the coogs this week. Best High School Tailback I personally saw play was Jaquizz Rodgers - currently at Oregon State. His brother James was a hell of a reciever as well. They pretty much single handidly beat USC by themselves last year. Shame they weren't recruited as heavily by the Texas Schools....those boys can flat out play!!!

Kenneth Hall's rushing yard number is amazing...as close to unstoppable as there ever was. HIs senior year alone he rushed for over 4000 yards! His 11,232 yards in High School is not only a Texas record but National as well.

Some other stats- From Wikipedia
Averaged 32.9 points per game (still a National record)
In one game he accounted for 687 total yards with rushing (11 carries for 520 yards), kickoff return of 64 yards, punt return of 82 yards and an interception return of 21 yards.

Talk about a one man show!

Was Welch a running back, though? I recall him being a flanker that spent a little time in the backfield but was used more as a split receiver from that spot, as well as a good punt returner and a great safety. I think I'm with Red on this one and would go with Norman as the best running back (and Welch as the best overall player.)

One memory that sticks out in my mind was one time when we were playing Gladewater, Delmonico Montgomery (the Bear RB) broke through the line and was running for a sure TD, when from at least 15 yards back, Red caught up with him inside the 10, and proceeded to take the ball away from him and run the other way. Red was only about 5'9" (maybe 5'10") and about 175 lbs, but he could still DUNK a basketball. WOW!

I remember Anthony Norman as well. Played football and basketball against both. Welch was a helluva basketball player, too. I thought P Goodman was the primary running back on that team.

As for Monahans, the one you're expecting is Charles Thompson (85-87 teams). He is one of two that gets mentioned in Monahans as the best ever, the other being before my time. In the early-mid 70s, we had a runner named Wayne Pettis (spelling?) that was supposed to be outstanding, too. Went to Oklahoma I hear, and I don't know where he went from there.

More impressive was that Sugar Land was dominating games back then, so Hall was pulled for the second half in many of those games. A lion's share of those yards were earned in the one half of play.

Terry Kircus, all-state Running Back 1991

Don't know much about the best, but Patrick Miller was a pretty decent decoy for that mediocre QB and receiver you guys use to have:D What ever happened to those guys?  :p

Celina has been blessed with great running backs! I have such a hard time narrowing it down to any less than 3:

Adam Harvey, Josh Sharrock, and Troy McCartney

I would say Jarrod Martin, 93-96

he scored 30 of 32 points in the 95 title game against Alto and is one of the five highest-scoring players in texas history (more than 800 points in his career-although he also kicked)

He was the best i've seen at Celina, although it seems we have had six or eight really good ones since.

Anthony Lynn was pretty good back in the mid-eighties (played in the NFL) but there wasn't enough around him for him to make noise in the playoffs.

Alfred starred at UT and then Atlanta so I'd say he's tops for Caldwell, but Canto and Stone also left lasting impressions.

1. Alfred Jackson - early 70's
2. Xavier Canto - few years ago
3. Mike Stone - early 90's

I wouldn't be a bit surprised. I tried to erase the name from my memory bank after the game in 05. I heard his name ALL NIGHT long - he was a BEAST - what's he doing now?
