It’s absolutely gorgeous up here. And the drive up from Phoenix was amazing as well. I’ll be taking lots of pics tomorrow on my way to Flagstaff, and will eventually get them posted on here. Do yourself a huge favor and make your way up here some day if you ever get the chance. You’ll be glad you did!

I'll be glad to email pictures to anyone who wants them. Just PM your email address to me.

And while I am thinking about it, do you plan on
watching any HS FOOTBALL GAMES while you are there?

Dunno if I've ever been to Sedona, been a long time since I've been to AZ... I know I've been to Tombstone, Tuscon, Phoenix, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon... Where is Sedona in relation to Phoenix and Flagstaff...

Speaking of Flagstaff, I flew out of the Flagstaff Airport, haircare and tire center...

K nevermind, looked at a map... It's only about 10 miles max off of I17, so I've been right by it, it is pretty nice up there... have a coupla steep grades around there somewhere, Eddie Rabbit wouldn't be making no time there, but he'd have to keep rollin'...

Sedona is between Phoenix and Flagstaff, but you have to get off of I17 onto a small two lane highway that loops out to the west through the mountains, then on up to Flagstaff. It only takes you a few miles out of way, and is worth every bit of it.

Oh also, I made a Dbacks game against the Giants while in Phoenix. Awesome stadium! I'll post the pics I took there as well.

my second most favorite drive. I am a huge Flagstaff fan also. IF you get the chance go to Tombstone and then make the drive down to Douglas. Check out the old copper mine in Dooney.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try to make those stops along my way. I already have several other places marked on my map to see as well.

On the way up to Flagstaff you drive through Jerome an old copper mining town on the side of the Butte below the Kabob National forest. It is a funky little hippie community now built on the side of a mountain with switchbacks all the way up. Very magical country out there.

Man, we love Sedona. Be sure to check out the old mining town of Jerome also. All of the indian ruins are awesome too. We visited some that were 18 miles down a dirt road, south and west of Sedona. Long trip at 20 mph, but definately worth it. And we intentionally stopped in Winslow to by gas once, just so we could stand on a corner.

Probably mentioned this before, but when I was 14 me and my step-bro pitched in 10 bucks each to buy Tombstone IN Tombstone... we had a regency mini-van back then and watched the movie over and over again on the way back to Cuero

Been a long time, but I've been through Phoenix, Mesa, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Window Rock, and Kingman (to the Turquoise mine). Drove IH10 through AZ on the way to Cal a couple of times too. Have a brother buried in the National Cemetary outside of Phoenix.

Have you ever made that drive during the middle of winter with the roads covered in ice & snow? :crazy1: :crazy1:

I was GM of the Furrs Cafeterias in Flagstaff for 3 years in the early 90's. We would often go down to Sedona to just sightsee and hang out. There is a small ski resort north of Flagstaff that i use to go to every week during the winter. That's where I perfected my ICE sking skills. I loved that country and climate. I hated the tourism and couldn't wait to get away from the native Americans. (it's a long story).

I just now finally got home. Man thats a long drive!
It's called "Chapel of the Holy Cross". It was built in 1956. And its absolutely amazing. Here is a link to their website.

http://chapeloftheholycross.com/store/

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is an iconic Catholic chapel built into the mesas of Sedona, Arizona, which was inspired and commissioned by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K. Strotz, both from the firm of Anshen & Allen. The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land; the late Senator Barry Goldwater assisted Staude in obtaining a Special Use permit. The construction supervisor was Fred Courkos, who built the chapel in 18 months at a cost of US$300,000. The chapel was completed in 1956. [1]

The American Institute of Architects gave the Chapel its Award of Honor in 1957. In the sculptor's words, “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men and be a living reality.”

In 2007 Arizonans voted the Chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona. [2]

The Chapel is one of the main tourist attractions in the Sedona area. It is open from 9am to 5pm daily and closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday and Easter.

The only services held at the Chapel is a Monday night prayer meeting.

I sure did. From San Francisco, Ca. to San Antonio, Tx. coming home for Christmas leave. Snow and ice all the way from the East side of the mountain at Bakersfield to about 10 miles west of El Paso. Driving 24 hours a day, it took us 3 days and 2 nights.

It had cleared after the holidays, and we made the return trip from Bryan to San Francisco in 29 hours.

I was only working Monday through Wednesday in Phoenix. I took the rest of the week to sight see, while getting paid.:D
I really want to go back again soon though. I could easily spend a week just in the Sedona / Flagsaff areas, and still might not be able to see it all. Majestic is probably the best word I could use to describe the sights around there, but even that doesnt do it justice. Now that I have had a little taste of it, I plan on going back many times in the future. I'm still in awe of what I saw while up there, and I didnt get to see but even a fraction of it. I have lots of brochures and pamplets about many of the other things to see and do up there though. So next time I'll have it all mapped out and planned. I cant wait to go back.

Not bad pictures for just a blackberry camera phone huh?
