Mustangs planning changes vs. Clyde

Sweetwater head coach Craig Slaughter and Clyde’s David Ritchey have a few things in common, and not just because they used to be together on the Bulldogs’ sideline as part of the same coaching staff, or that they run similar offenses and will have a pretty good idea of what to do on the field when facing each other this Friday at 7:30 in Clyde.
The other big similarity? Both are struggling offensively three games into the season, even though Clyde is off to a 2-1 start while Sweetwater is 0-3.
Clyde edged Early 14-7 this past week for its second win after a 21-20 victory at Wichita Falls Hirschi in its opener followed by a 34-0 loss to Graham.
Sweetwater, on the other hand, is coming off a 48-0 homecoming loss to Mona-hans — the second time the Mustangs failed to score in a game this year. However, Sweetwater is not that far from being 2-1 after falling to Seminole 20-14 in over-time two weeks ago and lo-sing to Burkburnett, 14-0, in its season opener.
The loss to Monahans is a game Slaughter and the entire team would like to forget. The Loboes scored in all four quarters and had 445 total yards and 22 first downs, while holding Sweetwater to 123 yards and six firsts.
Slaughter is planning to make some changes, primarily on the defensive side of the ball, against Clyde which he hopes will lead to a much different result when the teams meet at Clyde’s new stadium.
“We are trying to put the kids in a better spot where they can be successful,” he said.
There were a few individual defensive bright spots last week. Kris Mayes had nine tackles and two assists while defending one pass; Ken Norman had seven tackles and four assists and also defended two passes; B.J. Walker had eight tackles and six assists; Sam Nemir had three tackles, five assists and a quarterback knockdown; and Cole Rhoades had four tackles and three assists.
However, Nemir suffered a broken tibia during the game and is expected to be out for at least the next two weeks.
“The one positive (from last week’s game) is that we have kids out there who are trying to do things right and who are playing their butts off,” said Slaughter, who has moved a handful of players from the JV to the varsity in recent weeks.
