CUERO - Cuero has given true meaning to the term home-field advantage.

No. 9 Cuero (2-0) hasn't lost at home since 2003 and will take a streak of 29 consecutive home wins into Friday night's game against Devine (2-0) at Gobbler Stadium.

"There's nothing like playing in your home stadium," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "It's just special. Our kids grow up wanting to play in that stadium and be a Gobbler."

The streak began in 2003 with a 44-20 win over Sealy, which came two weeks after the Gobblers dropped 46-22 decision to Rice Consolidated in Reeve's first game at Cuero.

"A lot of people come out to Gobbler Stadium and really support us," quarterback Tyler Arndt said. "The atmosphere gets us alive."

Cuero has won three state championships and its tradition along with the size of its crowd and the fervency of its fans makes Gobbler Stadium a difficult place for opponents to play.

"I believe they're a little scared to see almost the whole town of Cuero in the stands and they see us walking out," center Logan Pickett said. "I think they do get a little bit nervous."

Cuero has had some close calls during the streak. The Gobblers used defensive stands late in the fourth quarter to hold off Wharton 56-55 in 2004 and Liberty Hill 31-27 in 2006.

Cuero forced a fumble and drove 42 yards before scoring with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter in a 26-21 win over Bay City last season.

"We put a good drive together," Arndt said. "I think on that drive we used just about everybody we could. We were not really using one person to get it done. We used just about everybody. We took it down the field and won the ballgame."

The Gobblers don't need a calendar to know when game day arrives.

"During school it's real loud and the teachers are hyped up and everybody is excited," lineman Nick Gamez said. "Then we get to the pep rally and everybody is excited. We get in here (the field house) and it's real quiet and we turn out the lights and we sit there and get prepared for the game."

Cuero will be making its first appearance at Gobbler Stadium since its scrimmage against Lockhart on Aug. 15.

"It's been a while since that first scrimmage," Arndt said. "A lot of people haven't seen us this year and a lot of them are going to be at the game and we really want to show them what we're all about."

Cuero expects a challenge from Devine and another from La Vernia, which defeated Cuero last season and comes to Gobbler Stadium on Sept. 25.

"This is where we want to play our best for the people coming to watch us, not only our friends but our families," Pickett said. "There's more excitement when we come out and play in Cuero."

CUERO FOOTBALL MOVES UP IN POLLS
Written by Don Brubaker
The Gobblers are ranked number 9 in the AP State 3A poll.

Two road games, two wins for Cuero, and a boost in the State AP poll. The Gobblers moved up one to number nine in the 3A rankings.

Three Gobblers told me Wednesday how pleased they are with their 2-0 start.
"We got off to a good start in our Beeville game", said quarterback Tyler Arndt. "We had our ups and downs, but we had a good week of practice, then came back and improved the next week against Rio Hondo. We showed a lot more poise than what we did."
"We feel real good", said linebacker/tailback Tanner Hoffmann. "We have a lot of good team chemistry. We have a lot of room for improvement but we'll get better each week."
"Oh we're real excited", said center/defensive tackle Logan Pickett. "As a team we played our best and you can't ask for more than that. We're pumped about beating our first two teams and doing pretty good."
The Gobblers' home debut comes this Friday night against Devine.
Coverage of that game planned for Friday Football Fever, 10:20 Friday night.
