When I saw on the scouting report that they had a Fr. running back, I really didn't know what to expect. HE IS A HORSE. They didn't use him much in the first half but turned him loose in the 2nd half and he is a stud. 5'11 & 185 lbs. good speed and very hard runner. He actually ran smooth OVER one of our starting LBs and then bounced it to the sidelines and picked up 20 or 30. He ended up as their leading rusher. He will be fun to watch him progress through this and the next 3 yrs to follow.

Thank Gawd. I was worried his last name might
be Whiteside. Sweetwater has had their fill of
Vernon RB's with that last name. :(

In the 90's, Vernon had a running back named Dexter Butler. I saw him play Southlake Carrol in a playoff game where he kicked off and was the first one downfield to make the tackle. He was one bad dude.

I wonder if that is his son? VernonLions#1 could tell us.

Yep, I'll concur, it's Dexter's boy. Dexter's SR year (1992) he was about 6'2" and about 250lbs of pure stud. The Vernon o-line didn't even block the d-line, they went straight to the LBs and safeties fully expecting Dexter to run over the d-line on his own. I know this because I was a Soph d-lineman that year and I think I might still have the imprint of his size 12 Nikes on my chest and forehead.

Richardson. I heard them call his name a few times during the game. That's significant because I believe he's a half brother to Bernard Scott of ACU and the Bengals.

If I'm also correct, I believe he has an older brother who is playing running back for ACU this year with the last name Richardson.

Derrick was a touchdown machine. He put up some amazing numbers that year (1990) and didn't even play in the 2nd half of several games because Vernon had such a comfortable halftime lead.

Dexter Butler was the 100 meter district champion as a 235 lb junior and got 5th in the shot put I believe.

I heard this guy quit school after the Southlake Carroll game his senior game is this true. Did he ever go play any college ball? I saw him play at the Southlake game and he looked like Bam Morris who was playing at Tech at that time.

About 6 or 7 years ago, I played against him in flag football (league) and that guy is still quick as a rabbit. It looks funny watching him because he is so big and can run so fast. A whole higher gear faster than all the little quick sprinter types.

I hope that Vernon can get back to the top level again. We have had some good teams over the past 10 years but just not quite great teams.
